Ravi Zacharias is a Christian apologetic speaker that travels across the world evangelizing to people. Zacharias was born in India in 1946 and later pursued an education in theology, also received his master’s in Divinity, studied philosophers and literature at Cambridge, and received six doctoral degrees in things such as Law and Sacred Theology (RZIM). He has gone on to become a well-respected speaker that has spoken in over 46 different countries and speaks at many college universities such as Harvard and Cambridge (RZIM). He is tied to many political leaders in various countries and sometimes appears on big news channels such as CNN and Fox News. Is it morally correct for the speaker to be using the strategy that they are to persuade? There are many characteristics of ethical persuasion that helps individual’s distinguish various types of ethical persuasive speech. One of those characteristics is democratic ethical concerns. This is when there are guidelines that “address the need for openness, accuracy, mutual respect, and justice” (Woodward, Denton 345). This means that when persuading an individual the speaker is open to new ideas and viewpoints to be discussed, they are completely truthful and factual in all that they say, they respect the person they are attempting to persuade by not looking down upon them, and finally that they ensure that everyone is treated fairly. When Zacharias speaks he uses most of the democratic ethical concern characteristics. In his speech to Yale he said that there is intrinsic value that is placed on every individual’s life (Let My People Think). He also says that equality and justice is not some made up conception but that it is each individual’s duty to treat one another with respect no matter their credentials in life based on social status, education, or the color of their skin (Let My People Think). If someone has respect and believes in justice and equality for all people then the openness and accuracy will follow. If someone respects another then they will be more open to any of their questions or view points and if they have respect for each person they will try to use factual information so that they are never misleading another person’s thoughts. Zacharias is known for quoting and telling stories that are written or spoken by others, however, he ensures to cite where he heard the information, and who said the quote, or what piece of work it comes from.
