One reason for this was that, after more than a decade in development, the movie was rumored to have cost about $260 million to make, which would be more than any other animated film to date. (Teeman 6) Another reason was that the animated feature Disney had released prior to Tangled, The Princess and the Frog, did not do as well as expected at the box office. This lack of success was attributed to the fact that The Princess and the Frog was strongly marketed as “princess movie,” and therefore alienated young male audiences. So as Rapunzel draws close to him in order to use her hair to heal him, Flynn takes hold of her hair and cuts it off. The magic of Rapunzel’s hair rapidly disappears and Mother Gothel screams as her body becomes old and decrepit. A writhing Gothel trips and falls out the tower window but her body turns to dust before she even reaches the ground. So the climax of Gothel’s story ends in her death. But as Rapunzel weeps over Flynn, the truth comes out that the power of the magic flower is still inside of her, when one of her tears falls on Flynn’s cheek and blossoms with healing light. All is made right as Flynn awakens and Rapunzel kisses him soundly. Rapunzel is abducted from her crib as an infant by an evil witch, Gothel, for the sole purpose of using her magical hair to enhance her beauty to make her young again. As an eager Rapunzel ages, she soon wants to be set free into a world that she has yet to see.

The enchantress, Rapunzel’s archetypally evil caregiver, uses her magically endowed capabilities to integrate herself into the domestic sphere. The enchantress’ first action is asking the aforementioned husband to donate his first-born child in return for access to her garden’s rampion. With a child, the enchantress finally domesticates herself, accepts the role society has placed upon her as a woman. The enchantress’ second action is her constructing a home for Rapunzel, a domestic place in which the beautiful young girl is constrained. Not only is the enchantress’ life a life of domestication, but she also insures that her inherited daughter’s life will be a domestic one by constructing her a dwelling. The magical enchantress’ power is used only for domestic purposes. Furthermore, when the enchantress learns that her daughter is deceiving her, the enchantress’ action is not to kill, beat, or curse Rapunzel; she banishes her from her domestic abode: “She was so pitiless that she took poor Rapunzel into a desert where she had to live in great grief and misery” (The Brothers Grimm). Again, the enchantress uses her power to manipulate the domestic setting, and the “all-powerful” enchantress seems to only have power over the domestic. This approach to the short story would cause one to see the little boy as a ghost after he dies. This would mean that the mother’s body is not responding to a traumatic event and having a mental confrontation with her own self. Instead, she is physically seeing the ghost of her deceased child and not only in her head. The Brothers show their side of fantasy almost immediately in this story by stating “THERE was once a mother..” This is a classical statement used in a broad range of fairy tales. Even when people create their own fairy tales, spoken or written, they often begin with the words “Once Upon A Time” which is similar to how this story is started. It brings creativity to the mind and makes one wonder how the story might continue on to be. The stepmother poisons an apple, Snow White eats it and then dies. After this, Gaiman’s version strays significantly from the fairy tale happy ending. As did the Queen’s and Snow White’s character change, so did the Prince’s. In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the prince kisses the princess and breaks the curse. In the Grimm brothers version, which is more like Gaiman’s, the piece of poisoned apple is dislodged from her throat and she comes back to life. In “Snow, Glass, Apples”, the prince’s true motives are uncovered. “He bade me remove my shift, and made me stand in front of the opened window, far from the fire, until my skin was chilled stone-cold. Then he asked me to lie upon my back, with my hands folded across my breasts, my eyes wide open – but staring only at the beams above. He told me not to move, and to breathe as little as possible. He implored me to say nothing”(Gaiman 342). The prince’s requests are strange and uncommon but the Queen complys. The prince is trying to make the Queen seem dead. This reveals the prince to be a necrophiliac, which is why he shows great interest when he first discovers Snow White’s body. He is willing to give the dwarfs anything in turn for Snow White’s corpse. They give it to him and while he is having his way with it, the piece of apple that is lodged in her throat becomes loosened and she comes back to life. Snow White stayed cold and always looked as if death was upon her, so the prince’s desire for her was not diminished when she awakened. The story of "Rapunzel" has been passed throughout generations in the form of a fairy tale. Typical fairy tales come to a resolution ending ‘happily ever after’. It seems that there is always a villain, always a hero, and some sort of a moral or lesson to be grasped from each story (Rhetoric 102K/L class discussion/lecture, January 18, 2001). Most of the traditional fairy tales involve a ‘damsel in distress’, in which she is happily rescued by a true love. These types of stories leave readers feeling that those who are in pain and anguish will eventually rise above and be granted pure happiness. It is this break in the traditional style that sets the Grimm stories apart from others.

One thing that Snow White, Cinderalla, and Sleeping Beauty all have in common is that they are all stories about princesses who live happily ever after with their prince.
Over the years, fairytales have been distorted in order to make them more family friendly. Once these changes occur, the moral and purpose of the stories begin to disappear. The tales featured in the many Disney movies - beloved by so many - have much more malignant and meaningful origins that often served to scare children into obeying their parents or learning valuable life lessons.
