In “Rappaccini’s Daughter,” a tale written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1844, many conflicts, both thematically and characteristically, take place and help to illustrate Hawthorne’s gothic and epic themes. Conflicts between modern science and morality, good and evil, and inherent human faulty are all made evident. Four main characters are presented as vessels for Hawthorne’s grand scheme: Giacomo Rappaccini, Professor Baglioni, Giovanni Guasconti, and Beatrice.
Doctor Giacomo Rappaccini is a brilliant scientist, focusing mostly in the botanical sciences. Upon his first introduction into the story, no evidence of an antagonistic role is made palpable. However, this is all but far from the case. Rappaccini has made what appears to be “the garden of Eden.” A botanical garden at his estate, it houses dozens of glorious flower breeds and varieties. He spends most all of his time either in the garden or doing other scientific experiments. As the deception of appearances is made clearer, we start to realize the true nature and role of this character in the story. As Hawthorne states regarding Rappaccini in his garden:
“. . .in spite of the deep intelligence on his part, there was no approach to intimacy between himself and these vegetable existences. On the contrary, he avoided their actual touch, or the direct inhaling of their odors, with a caution that impressed Giovanni most disagreeably; for the man's demeanor was that of one walking among malignant influences, such as savage beasts, or deadly snakes, or evil spirits, which, should he allow them one moment of license, would wreak upon him some terrible fatality. It was strangely frightful to the young man's imagination, to see this air of insecurity in a person cultivating a garden, that most simple and innocent of human toils, and which had been alike the joy and labor of the unfallen parents of the race. Was this garden, then, the Eden of the present world?--and this man, with such a perception of harm in what his own hands caused to grow, was he the Adam?” (p. 649-650)
Upon this statement, the conflict of his attempt at playing the role of God and of science versus nature is presented. Rappaccini is a man completely diluted by his own intellect.

In some scenes, the camera zooms in on things the director may want the audience to notice. For example, the trees which also serve an importance in the film are zoomed into, mainly the 500-year-old tree. Remarkably, the camera focuses on the tree during Alberto’s death scene, because Alberto’s failing health serve as an indicator of the Jewish community in Ferrara, Italy. Not to mention, the scene where the camera zooms in Alberto 's hand, to reveal his illness early in the film. On another note, the camera zooms in Micol’s Star of David necklace, the zoomed in scenes of Jewish symbols remind the audience the Finzi-Continis and Giorgio’s family are Jewish. More over reinforcing that regardless of their social status, they’re still Jews. Though, the Finzi-Continis hardly seem to care about the fact that their rights are slowly being taken away. It appears their wealth and social status have put them above the laws, and the garden seems to promise that nothing will change, again enforcing this theme of false

In the Nathaniel Hawthorne tale, “Rappaccini’s Daughter,” we see and feel the solitude/isolation of the scientific-minded surgeon, Dr. Rappaccini, likewise that of his daughter, Beatrice, and finally that of the main character, Giovanni. Is this solitude not a reflection of the very life of the author?

Without this, the characters may choose a different route with different opinions, changing the story.

In Rappaccini 's Daughter, it is full of symbols and symbolic allusions. Its setting is a fantastic garden filled with vegetation and poisonous flowers and in the center is a broken fountain. Hawthorne's focus is on Beatrice as she is seen by Giovanni. Hawthorne presents a trapped and poisonous Beatrice who needs a special kind of redemption. She is a prisoner in the garden and her body is full of poison.
III. Comparable aspects of Hawthorne's characterization in The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables

The lure of the exotic, an aspect of Romanticism, is present in Giovanni’s character. The author describes the flowers oddly by saying they were not indigenous to Italy, comparing them to other things such as snakes, and stating that they looked colorful and beautiful (Hawthorne). The flowers, based on this description, clearly attract attention because they are different. Elisa is a country housewife. She is semi-distant from her husband and greatly distant from the world around her. She is a homebody, meaning that she rarely leaves the boundaries of her home and she has a lot of time and energy being built up. She uses some of this energy to clean up her house, but most of it is spent on her flower garden. Her garden is a place of solitude. It’s her own little world where she can let herself go and be the person that she wants to be. Her feminine side is brought out in her garden, the nurturer for the chrysanthemums, a mother almost to them. When the tinkerer comes to her home and into her garden he shows interest in her chrysanthemums. She takes this also as an interest in her as well. The garden in other words is a symbol for her femininity and womanhood.
The Scarlet Letter is a blend of realism, symbolism, and allegory. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses historical settings for this fictional novel and even gives historical background information for the inspiration of the story of Hester Prynne in the introduction of The Scarlet Letter, ‘The Custom-House’. The psychological exploration of the characters and the author’s use of realistic dialogue only add to the realism of the novel. The most obvious symbol of the novel is the actual scarlet letter ‘A’ that Hester wears on her chest every day, but Hawthorne also uses Hester’s daughter Pearl and their surroundings as symbols as well. Allegory is present as well in The Scarlet Letter and is created through the character types of several characters in the novel.
