Raffaello Sanzio, more commonly known as Raphael, was born to his mother and father on April 6, 1483. He was born in the town of Urbino in Italy. Raphael’s father worked as a court painter under the Duke of Urbino. Raphael often helped his father paint some paintings for the court. Being around and growing up around the court as much as he did, Raphael was introduced to practicing proper manners and to new social skills. His mother passed away when he was eight years old and even though his father remarried, he passed away four years later. The passing of Raphael’s parents left him orphaned and living with his uncle, who was a priest. While living with his uncle, Raphael showed the talent that he had learned while helping his father at the Duke’s court. Around the age of fifteen or sixteen, Raphael did a self-portrait, which is the earliest known example of his work (Raphael Sanzio, 2012).

While in Rome, he was commissioned to do a number of pieces for the Pope. Raphael was supposed to marry a woman by the name of Maria Bibbiena, who he was engaged to, however he never had the chance. Raphael passed away at the age of thirty-seven, and oddly enough, he passed away on the exact date of his thirty-seventh birthday (Raphael Sanzio, 2012). Before his death, Raphael was able to receive his last rites and he got all his affairs in order. He was able to dictate his will and left funds for the care of his mistress and also left most of what he had left of his studio contents to Giulio Romano and Penni. Raphael’s funeral, at the Pantheon per his request, was very grand and many people attended (Raphael Biography, 2014). Written on his sarcophagus, or casket, was “Here lies that famous Raphael by whom nature feared to be conquered while he lived, and when he was dying, feared herself to die” (Raphael Sanzio, 2012).
