The Untold Facts About Rape


Rape culture is an unnoticed problem in today’s society, and is much larger than most people think. American society allows for victims to be unjustly blamed, and the statistics are shocking. One in four women and one in six men will be sexualy assaulted in their lifetime. On a darker note, one and every seven victims of sexual assault is under the age of six. Rape is an unjust situation that needs to be resolved. One way to solve this problem is to teach society that rape is wrong.
Rape society has made degrading jokes about women’s bodies are common. For rape culture to end, degrading jokes have to be removed from society. One article says, “On Facebook there is a group called ‘Overheard at Guelph” devoted to ‘overheard conversations around campus’.... On 13 March 2012, a student put up a chant overheard while on the late night public bus… about rape: I wish all the women /Were statues of Venus /Cuz then they’d have no arms/ To push away my [private part]”(Bretez 18-19)This is an example of the extents of downgrading humor. It shows that many people think that lowering women to objects is something to laugh at, and it makes these jokes commonplace. One quote that supports this is, “Victim-blaming attitudes marginalize the victim/survivor and make it harder to come forward and report the abuse….Victim-blaming attitudes also reinforce what the abuser has been saying all along; that it is the victim’s fault this is happening”(Southern Connecticut State University 1). By accusing victims, the perpetrators avoid punishment because society tells victims to fix the problem by themselves, even though it was not the victims offence in the beginning.
