In Nature and Self-Reliance, Ralph Waldo Emerson develops the theme of a simplified life in order to illustrate/prove the importance of immersing oneself in nature and living more freely without the weight of distractions or problems weighing one down. To simplify life is to un-complicate one's lifestyle by reducing possessions and living off of only on what they truly need. In his essay Nature, Emerson talks about how it's necessary for someone to leave their old life and immerse themselves into nature and its solitude. This idea gives people an opportunity to connect back to their roots and enjoy the true meaning of life. One should avoid conformity because "envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, or worse; as his portion...". (Emerson, Self-Reliance 185) This idea can help one simplify life by reducing the amount of energy and time they put into being someone or something else and encourages them to just be themselves. When simplifying life, "the power of which resides in him is new in nature [...]." (Emerson, Self-Reliance 185) Only an individual has the power to make their life less complex and this power comes from the support of nature. When trying to simplify one's life, there can be numerous distractions out there, but when you focus "the voices which we hear in solitude, they grow faint and inaudible as we enter into the world." (Emerson, Self-Reliance 186) When one simplifies their life they enter a new untapped world with many new experiences awaiting them.
