Love’s Paths
Waldo Ralph Emerson wrote this poem titled “ Give All To Love” following the death of his wife. The inspiration and the emotion portrayed in each stanza in the poem is truly heartfelt. Mr. Emerson is advising the reader to cherish his beloved as well as every moment they have together ensuring that he gives all to love. Furthermore, He is conveying that while a man is to love a woman with all his heart, but he must also know when to let her part from his life because by setting her free, he will open the door for another woman to enter his life who will love him unconditionally.
The author is teaching his reader that love cannot be controlled; it must be allowed to spread its wings, be free to change its path. In the second stanza, Mr. Emerson refers to love as a god who knows its path and the outlet of the sky (line 15-17); by that he is attesting that no one really chooses who he loves; no one is in control of his feelings. Love is in control, and love creates and follows its own path. He is telling the reader to obey his heart and to let his heart lead him towards the right path even when it means letting go. Mr. Emerson is teaching his reader to learn to let go because at any point, his beloved can also be taken from him by a higher power and when

that happens, it takes bravery to let go of what he holds closest to his heart. Mr. Emerson is expressing that letting a woman be free to follow her path will improve his life. He says in the forth stanza “They shall return more than they were, and ever ascending” (line 22-25). He is saying that a woman must never feel like a prisoner, she should remain free to be with whom she chooses. Therefore, if a woman believes she has found someone who can make her happier or whom she will be happier with, the man must love her enough and to possess the courage to let her be free. While her departure from his life may turn days into nights, still the reader must remain free as an Arab (line 32). The reward for letting go is simple; if she comes back, then it was meant to be and the relationship improves; however, if she does not return the man must remain free as an Arab and allow his heart to remain open for better (line 32). Mr. Emerson wants his reader to understand if he does not let go of a woman who does not truly love him or is not ready to share his love, he will miss out on the greatest, most special, and the most important thing, which is true love. He describes love as the greatest force and by allowing it to take control, He will learn the true meaning of his very existence. Finally, a man should allow his heart to be guided by love and then and only then can he feel the power of true love. “Heartily knows, when half gods go, the god arrive,” are the last three lines in the poem “Give all to love”.
Those three short lines are the symbol that Mr. Emerson uses to reiterate to his reader that once he is able to let go, true love will finally enter his life. In conclusion, a man is to love with everything he has, with every bones of his body and be willing to make sacrifices for love, and sometimes that means letting go of the person he loves rather she chooses to leave him or she is taken from him by a higher power. When a man devotes everything to love, he will be able to remain free of his beloved and be able to let her go her own path; thus allowing him to reach the outlets of the
sky.
When Emerson states," The soul always hears an admonition in such lines, let the subject be what it may" he wants the reader to think about
It refers more to the idea that people must work for their goals. Another line in verse two is “Bitterness keeps you from flying” which metaphorically is suggesting that being bitter will prevent people from succeeding in life. The final three lines in verse two speak of love: “Know the difference between sleeping with someone/ And sleeping with someone you love/ I love you ain’t no pick up line”. These three lines are alluding back to the times when people knew the people they woke up next to, the times when the phrase “I love you” was not thrown around just to make someone happy; it had actual

The diction of this poem influences the imagery with the tone of the words . They are used to convey the message of how it feels to not feel the spark of love
Love is the greatest gift that God has bestowed upon mankind. Defining love is different for every culture, race, and religion. Walt Whitman’s love is ever changing for anyone who tries to love him or understand his work. Love can be broken down into a multitude of emotions, and feelings towards someone or some object. In order to find love that is searched for, preparations must be made to allow the full experience of Whoever You Are Holding Me Now in Hand by Walt Whitman to be pious. Walt Whitman’s poem is devoted to the fullness of love, and a description of fantasy and reality. A journey to find love starts with knowledge that both participants are willing, and able to consummate their love in judgment under God. Time is the greatest accomplice to justify the energy and sacrifice needed to start developing the ingredients needed for love to grow. Each stanza is a new ingredient to add to the next stanza. Over time, this addition of each stanza will eventually lead to a conclusion. A conclusion that love is ever changing, and people must either change along with love or never know the miracle of love.
Right after the line, “final uneasiness.” (16) the poem’s intended audience changes. The audience shifts from lovers and their experience with love to a more specific person/intended individual love to him. This is important to understand because it further demonstrates the emotions the speaker has. After the shift, the speaker says “Love, if you love me,/….Be for me, like rain,” (17-19). In this he is demanding that if someone wants to love him or be with him they need to be like rain. The image of rain falling outside is something simple and beautiful. Rain, to some people can be a calming sensation to feel on their cheeks. It is interesting how rain is used in a positive light to describe love because rain is not something one would typically assimilate to love. Rain is beautiful, like love, but to compare the two to illustrate a meaning is thought-provoking. Why would the speaker use rain to describe love? Possibly because it is beautiful like love and has characteristics one may desire in love? This may be true, but conversely it can be assumed that love is difficult to comprehend and that through the use of something out of the ordinary maybe some understanding of the abstract emotion can be facilitated. At the end of the poem the speaker leaves his intended audience with the final phrase of “Be wet/ with a decent happiness.” (23-24). This final phrase is significant because it tells the audience and those who desire
The poem says that "since feeling is first" (line 1) the one who pays attention to the meaning of things will never truly embrace. The poem states that it is better to be a fool, or to live by emotions while one is young. The narrator declares that his "blood approves" (line 7) showing that his heart approves of living by feeling, and that the fate of feeling enjoyment is better than one of "wisdom" (line 9) or learning. He tells his "lady" (line 10) not to cry, showing that he is speaking to her. He believes that she can make him feel better than anything he could think of, because her "eyelids" (line 12) say that they are "for each other" (line 13). Then, after all she's said and thought, his "lady" forgets the seriousness of thought and leans into the narrator's arms because life is not a "paragraph" (line 15), meaning that life is brief. The last line in the poem is a statement which means that death is no small thi...
It is also saying that wars will end up destroying the monuments, but not poetry because it makes you immortal and you cannot be destroyed by the horrible means. You will outlive death and everything that seeks to destroy you, even in the future. The couplet/ turning point then doesn't change the mood but instead demands that you stay in this place until the day they come to judge you. The theme of this poem is immortality because the whole time the author is talking about how if you stick to one thing like your lover, nothing can ever hurt you. This poem follows the idea of love and marriage, because it hints that if you are faithful to your lover and marriage that nothing can hurt you as long as you have
In the poem she suggests that this love has now returned and will be given to her husband. In the beginning of the poem, Elizabeth captures the reader's attention by asking, "How do I Love Thee? The poet takes us back to that childhood of hers after falling in love with her soul-mate. In the poem she is trying to describe the abstract feeling of love by measuring how much her love means to her. In the second line she says, “I love thee to the depth & breath & height”, she tries to measure something that cannot be measured. However, no one can really tell you the true meaning of love, because everyone has different points of views about
The Merriam-Webster dictionary gives us a simple definition of love as a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person (Merriam-Webster). We recognize that this could be romantic, filial (parent-child), or platonic love. Humans by nature have an almost innate desire to be loved but our ability to truly conceptualize it is based on personal life experience. Those experiences usually define or distort love in our eyes. Relationships, as most honest people would confess, are not easy. They are filled with good and bad times, periods of immense joy and of pain or testing. This is particularly found in romantic love, so much so that the theme, love, has been the driving force in countless movies, music, television, and literary works of art throughout all time periods, genres, and cultures. One of many famous poems that tackle this theme is Edna St. Vincent Millay’s 1931 published sonnet, “Love is not all.” In it the speaker expresses love in a negative but logical tone; nevertheless, concluding that although love is not all, it is
The concept of love has long been the preferred topic of conversation among prominent male poets. Towards the closing of the sixteenth century, however, the emerging of the female poet took place. With the introduction of Queen Elizabeth, an initial path was now cleared for future women poets to share their views on the acclaimed topic of love. Due to this clashing of ideas, the conflicting views of two exceedingly different sexes could manifest itself. Who better to discuss the topic of love then Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who expresses her ideas with intelligence comparable to the best male poets, and Emerson, world renowned for his poignant opinions? In accordance with the long history of conflict between males and females, both Emerson’s "Give All to Love" and Browning’s "Sonnet 43" convey the pleasure love brings, but while Emerson’s poem urges the retention of individualism in a relationship, Browning pleads for a complete surrender to love.
Ralph Waldo Emerson has taken the place in history as one of the most influential writers in the 19th century because of his romantic style of writing. The poem Amulet continues Emerson’s trend of romantic poems. In the poem Amulet, Emerson takes the reader on a poetic journey that shows the transitions and reality of love. The first stanza illustrates love through visions of happiness and gifts but then shows how quickly the feelings of love can change. As the poem moves to the next stanza, Emerson asks for protection from this changing love. Highlighting feelings of being in love to being out of love, By the third stanza, Emerson shows that love is in fact transitional. In the end, the reader is left with an understanding the poem's meaning implies that nothing can really protect a person from love that is lost. Emerson uses literary devices such as personification, symbolism, and metonymy to illustrate his message. The form of the poem is a ballad, which he uses strategically because ballads are usually written about love.

There had been many muses to the world of poetry, may it be a person or even a perception on life. Love is one that prevails all in the musings and perhaps there is a reason for that. While there are some that are cynical in the way of love and how it affects a person, love can have many positive effects on the mood and behavior of an enamored individual. With works from well known poets such as Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, and even the bard himself, William Shakespeare, the subject of love jumps up from the pages as changing an individual. Not all these authors and word artists agree with how love warps the mind. May the subject of love come from words on paper, paint on a canvas, or even in the lives of these people, love can prevail and
