In Pather Panchali (Satyajit Ray, 1955) the rain sequence is tremendously significant to the entirety of the story Ray, is known for his technical work and this scene is no different. Skillfully, Ray uses camera techniques, sound and editing to show Durga’s excitement of the rainstorm. Concurrently, it is also ironic considering Durga’s death only a few scenes after. Particularly, the editing choices for this sequence is interesting. Ray’s use of editing, combined with his sound design creates the same sense of curiosity, excitement and anticipation within his audience that he creates in his characters.
The first full minute and a half of this sequence of scenes starts with a compilation of different shots of nature mostly pertaining to water. By opening the scene with a shot of the water to begin with, it does not feel out of place to the audience that the two would run here. Even the Rain (also known as También la lluvia) is a 2010 Spanish film about a director Sebastian and executive producer Costa who travel to Cochabamba, Bolivia to shoot a movie about the exploration and exploitation of Christopher Columbus in the New World. The price of water jumps by 300 percent, leading to remonstrations and riots in the streets of Cochabamba. The protest is calm at first, but things become aggressive when the government fights back, and Daniel's participation almost disturbs the shooting schedule. As Sebastian and Costa struggle with their film, the violence in the community increases daily, until the entire city erupts into the infamous Cochabamba Water War. This film takes on significant questions of everyday life, as well as moral and human responsibility.

During the Joads trip to California they encountered many difficulties through which the weather was hot and bare and even when they did arrive in California it ends up raining which brings a feeling of sadness for them but also a hope for a new beginning. This recurring image from when Ramanujan dies in the past is brought forward into the present storyline making the link between the past and present even stronger. Because this is a repeated image, the water becomes a metaphor for death, the death of Ramanujan and the death of Ruth and her baby. This scene is a peaceful scene even with this metaphor attached. The audience gets to empathise with Al as he lets go of the past and moves on. Imagery is key in this final scene. The sand that each of the characters pour out from various objects, Al pouring from the cremation box and Ramanujan pouring from his tablet, shows the passing of time.
