The Powerful Symbol of Water in Beloved Water. It expresses its’ power in the form of hurricanes and flash floods. It displays its gentleness, washing dirt off a child's scabbed knee. Water has been used to quench the thirst of many longing throats; and it has been the cause of death to those who unfavorably crossed its path. It possesses the power of total destruction, yet it holds the bases of all life. Generally, water has symbolized cleanliness and renewal. In the Bible, water was used in Baptism, cleansing the soul of original sin and offering a new life in the light of God. Water in itself is a natural purifier, washing the dirt from our bodies. Water is a symbol of transition-from dirty to clean. In Beloved, Morrison uses water to introduce a transition between stages in a character's life. Water separates one stage of a character's life from another. Paul D.'s escape from Alfred, Georgia was directly helped and represented by the rain that had fallen in the past weeks. Paul D. was sent to Alfred, George because he tried to kill Brandywine, his master after the schoolteacher. In Alfred, he worked on a chain gang with forty-five other captured slaves. They worked all day long with "the best hand-forged chain in Georgia" threading them together. They slept in a cell dug out of the earth. A man's breaking point was challenged everyday. It was hell for Paul D. Then it rained. Water gave Paul D. his freedom. The rain raised the water level in the in-ground cell so they could dive, "down through the mud under the bars, blind groping," in search of the other side (p. 110). She had found the child that she had lost. The water symbolized the beginning of her life with Beloved. Sethe could now begin sharing her life with Beloved again. She could Ice-skate, take walks, or just begin to love her child again. Beloved describes the struggle and challenge of former slaves trying to deal with an unforgettable past. Their brave journey carries them through tragic times full of torment and torture, and joyful times full of love and tenderness. Beloved teaches the lesson of never giving up. Water denotes a change for the better--from dirty to clean--where a person rebounds from life's tragedies. It symbolizes hope and reassurance that life will improve.

In both of Glaspell’s pieces, the main character, Mrs. Wright, is accused of killing her husband. Minnie Wright was a farmer’s wife who didn’t have much contact with the outside world. The murder investigation took place inside her home. Three men are used to investigate the case and two women come with them. The women were no help to the men, but solved the case but also protected Mrs. Wright from any wrongdoing. The three men tried to find a motive, but the case remained unsolved. Susan Glaspell show’s in the two pieces how women are disregarded in investigative matters.
Throughout The Outlander, the use of water imagery is often a symbol for several negative feelings – for example the feeling of being drowned or out of control – she experiences and how she eventually overcomes them. It is used as a metaphor for the turbulence in her relationships, for example in a flashback it is stated that “For Mary, [the courtship with her late husband] was like slipping into water and letting the current carry her faster and faster” (139), the water here demonstrates her lack of control over her own life. Another example of this occurs when she has met someone new and doesn’t know where she’s being escorted or what will happen, “Her dark hair whipped about her face and Helen’s about hers, as if the two women were underwater plants waving in a river’s anxious current” (135). The imagery of water is utilized to express Prospero’s sadness and misery. ‘’ When I have deck’d the sea with drops full salt,/ Under my burthen groan’d;’’ (Shakespeare, I, ii, 155-156), describes Prospero conveying his despair when Antonio, his brother, took his throne away from him by saying he had so many tears that they could have filled the sea. This shows to the audience how valuable his throne and kingdom were to Prospero. Water is an archetype that means life and growth. When his throne was taken away from him, Prospero ‘’grew’’ and became a different person. He had new goals and determination in life. In addition, the imagery of the sea and wind are also used to provoke emotion from the audience. The images used in the collage are of the sea and the wind blowing together. The quote used with the collage expresses the sadness Prospero went through. The Jordan River is a place desired to visit by Christians and people whom practice their faith. A baptism by water signifies purity and regeneration into the Christian church. There are different styles of undergoing a baptism. Some people are submerged under water, while others might only get sprinkled with water on their forehead. Baptisms are celebrated with the church, immediate family and friends. There is not a required age someone must be to get baptized. Water is also referred to Gods word in the Bible. God refers to water as a cleanser “I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols” (The Bible). In Beloved, Toni Morrison paints a picture of the cruelty of slavery. She emphasizes the African American’s desire for a new life as they try to move beyond their past to achieve their freedom. In Beloved, "Much of the characters’ pain occurs as they reconstruct themselves, and their families after the devastation of slavery" (Kubitschek 115). Through the novel, Morrison uses color to represent a life complete with joy, freedom, and protection, as well as things like community and family. In many sections, Morrison uses color to portray a character's desire for this life while, in other instances, Morrison utilizes color to illustrate the pleasure and realization which the characters experience once they obtain this life.
Water can symbolize many things throughout the novel. Whether it is in Manawaka, the Pacific Coast or Shadow point, what is constantly recognized in the number of times water is used. If one were to closely examine these situations, they would soon discover it's symbolic importance. In the novel The Stone Angel, water is presented in the many fluctuations, in Hagar's life. Hagar goes through many stages in her life, where water is represented but without it being physically present. Without the imagery of water, the story would be less effective and meaningful for the reader.

It also appeared eighteen years ago, but Sethe thinks that it may have grown cherries in those years. Therefore she knows that the past has attached itself to her, but the haunting of it has not stopped growing. Paul D. enters Sethe's life and discovers a haunting of Sethe almost immediately. He walks into 124 and notices the spirit of the murdered baby: "It was sad." Walking through it, a wave of grief soaked him so thoroughly he wanted to cry" (9).

In Susan Glaspell’s “A Jury of Her Peers”, female characters face inequality in a society dominated by the opinions of their husbands. The women struggle to decide where their loyalty rests and the fate of a fellow woman. Aided by memories and their own lifestyles the women realize their ties to a woman held for murder, Minnie Foster Wright. Through a sympathetic connection these women, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters have greater loyalty to a fellow woman than to their husbands and even the law; this greater loyalty ultimately shows the inequality between genders.
Toni Morrison’s Beloved follows the history of Sethe and her family from their enslavement at Sweet Home to their life post slavery. Despite their newfound freedom, tragic experiences haunt Sethe and the members of her family. These experiences limit Sethe’s ability to move forward in her life Within the novel, Morrison marks each pivotal moment, or especially graphic moment, in Sethe’s life with an underlying theme of biblical symbolism. Morrison seems to intentionally make these connections to imply that the characters have subliminally let these stories attach to their memories. This connection helps to minimize the characters’ sense of isolation; their trauma takes places within the greater context of stories of suffering familiar to them.
The biology aspects of water is that it makes up 60% of the human body and 71% of the earth is water. Without this liquid, there will be no life on Earth because animals, humans, and plants cannot stay hydrated. Also, statistics show that people can live longer without food, but water is a necessity. Hence the warning for travelers to bring a lot of water when traveling through the desert or Grand Canyon. The lesson is that water is a symbol for healing because it is a component that keeps life going.
In “The Negro Speaks of Rivers”, the river stands as a symbol of endlessness, geographical awareness, and the epitome of the human soul. Hughes uses the literary elements of repetition and simile to paint the river as a symbol of timelessness. This is evident in the first two lines of the poem. Hughes introduces this timeless symbol, stating, “I've known rivers: I've known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins” (Hughes 1-2). These opening lines of the poem identifies that the rivers Hughes is speaking about are older than the existence of human life. This indicates the rivers’ qualities of knowledge, permanence, and the ability to endure all. Humans associate “age” with these traits and the longevity of a river makes it a force to be reckoned with. The use of a simile in the line of the poem is to prompt the audience that this is truly a contrast between that ancient wisdom, strength, and determination of the river and the same qualities that characterize a human being.
