Conservatism supports family values and has a generally more independent way of thinking. As conservatives, we believe in focusing on solving one’s own issues and making decisions for one’s self, instead of the community. Conservatives promote equal justice as opposed to the liberalist way of promoting social justice. Radical liberalist focus on allowing everyone equal opportunities regardless of skill level. Contrary to popular belief it is easily possible for conservatism to have many more positive acclamations as opposed to liberalism. It is important that we as conservatives end the liberal way of thinking before it begins to weed its way into the nation.
Classic conservatism emerged in the midst of the French Revolution. It came about when Chateaubriand gave the name Le Conservateur to a journal he issued in order to resist the spread of new politics, especially democratic ideas. It didn’t take long for the name to be taken up by others, like myself, who oppose the progress of democracy. Conservatism centers on the idea of one centralized monarch as well as church, also the idea that there should be one born with the divine right to lead. Conservatism revolves around tradition and social stability. Conservatives believe in a gradual development as opposed to an immediate change. The obvious enemy of conservatism is liberalism, or “radicals”.
Liberalists are the radical believers of change. Liberalists support the ideas of equality, liberty, individuality, and rationality. Liberalism is on a steady decline and is slowly becoming a mere background theory. Liberalism doesn’t hold enough legitimate weight to even be considered an ideology of the 19th century. Instead we should just use the necessary ideas and implement them...

If we allow the liberals to implement their way of thinking then our nation will eventually turn to chaos and turmoil. We must stand up for our beliefs in the monarchy and the divine ruler, and fight to keep the liberals out of parliament. Our traditions will be the backbone of this nation and a depending factor of our gradual change. However, if we attempt to change the nation abruptly as the liberals may suggest, then nothing but negativity will fall among our people. All voting rights and decision making should remain in the hands of land-owners and the elite for they are the ones who were born to lead and have a better understanding of what is needed within our nation. The poor are not equipped to handle this kind of responsibility and should be ultimately left out of government without fear that their population will not be represented.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt is commonly identified as a liberal and President Herbert C. Hoover as a conservative. The validity of these characterizations, however, is conditional upon the definition of these labels. If one adopts the most conventional contemporary definitions of the terms “liberal” and “conversative,” then the characterizations of Roosevelt as a liberal and Hoover as a conservative are valid, but the definitions of liberal and conservative vary and change over time and place.
The typical conservative tends to focus his philosophical Ideals on the self reliance and free market. They don't see the need for big spending politicians and big government programs. They would prefer to see the money stay in the private sector. They also believe that business people tend to be better at economic decisions than politicians. They believe that the government has it's place, but many times oversteps it's authority for political reasons. Big business and corporations are not evil in their world, in fact most conservatives will tell you that big business and corporate success is the only thing that will make the economy go.
People continue to argue whether the New Deal is radical or conservative today using many programs and outcomes as their support. The government imposed new radical programs influencing American society with changes in political and social reform. Conservatives at the time felt threatened by government interference feeling the changes led them toward a socialist style of government. Today, historians view the New Deal as more conservative, completely opposite of what conservatives felt at the time. With programs challenging economic, social, and political standards, the New Deal imposed both radical and conservative ideals into the American society causing Franklin D. Roosevelt to leave his lasting stamp and legacy on all presidents and generations to come.
James Oakes’ The Radical and the Republican narrated the relationship between two of America’s greatest leaders: Frederick Douglass, the “radical” abolitionist, and Abraham Lincoln, the “Republican” politician. He did an astonishing job of demonstrating the commonalities between the views of Douglass and Lincoln, but also their differences on their stance of anti-slavery politics and abolitionism. Despite being on the same side of the argument of slavery, Douglass and Lincoln went about their opinions separately. Lincoln held a more patient and orthodox stance on anti-slavery, while Douglass was proven to be obstinate and direct with
Classical conservatism or traditional conservatism, Burkean conservatism, and Toryism, is a party that has re-expressed their convections to fit the time. (Frohnen, Beer, and Nelson, 2006) In classical conservatism, many parties have adapted their view points. One of the first parties in American that adapted the philosophies of conservatism was the Whigs. The Whigs opposed monarchial power, advocated internal reform of administration, and freedom under the law. They believed in balancing orders in the common wealth and religious toleration. (Kirk, 1953) One person highly recognized for his work in the public sector for conservatism was Edmund Burke.
There is a strong sense of social obligation within paternalistic conservatism - with wealth comes obligations, and the economic inequality in the country leads to an inequality of social responsibilities. Coming off of the defeat of Napoleon, European rulers met at the Congress of Vienna, striving to keep peace and stability among the countries across Europe. These various rulers made legitimate monarchies to preserve institutions and worked with each other to balance their powers so that no other country would be able to dominate Europe. These so called “peace arrangements” became the start of a new order called Conservatism. Conservatism means “an ideology based on tradition and social stability that favored the maintenance of established institutions, organized religion, and obedience to authority and resisted change, especially abrupt change”(Spielvogel p. 678) Edmund Burke, one of the first philosophers to establish Conservatism, wrote in his book, Reflections on the Revolution in France, “the state ought not to be considered as nothing better than a partnership agreement in a trade of pepper and coffee, to be taken up for a temporary interest and to be dissolved by the fancy of the parties” (Spielvogel p.443) meaning that no generation should have the right to destroy a partnership but instead should have the duty of preserving and transmitting the partnership to the next generation. Other Conservatives believed in the same idea of having a strict obedience to political authority...
Starting during the 1970s, factions of American conservatives slowly came together to form a new and more radical dissenting conservative movement, the New Right. The New Right was just as radical as its liberal opposite, with agendas to increase government involvement beyond the established conservative view of government’s role. Although New Right politicians made admirable advances to dissemble New Deal economic policies, the movement as a whole counters conservativism and the ideologies that America was founded on. Although the New Right adopts conservative economic ideologies, its social agenda weakened the conservative movement by focusing public attention to social and cultural issues that have no place within the established Old Right platform.
After the government-destroying Revolution that the people believed to be suppressing their liberty, there was a realization that government was still irrefutably necessary for liberty. This resulted in some resurrection of what was initially fought against, in which we see glimpses of republican ideas from the classical world in American political culture, for the founders believed that republican virtue and liberal individualism were compatible and interdependent elements that would create a distinctive America (Vetterli and Bryner,
Metaphysical Premises And Types Of Liberal Ideology: Liberalism As The End And Liberalism As The Way
A liberal in older days was not what one would be today; they were considered a person whom sought to use change, while a conservative is one who opposed change. The differences between a liberal and a conservative is a wide gap that focuses upon the fundamental beliefs of those within each group. Pure liberals are people who show themselves as liberal on both economic policy and personal conduct. This means "that they want the government to reduce economic inequality, regulate business, tax the rich heavily, cure the (presumably) economic causes of crime, allow abortions, protect the rights of the accused, and guarantee the broadest possible freedoms of speech and press." (Wilson, 121)
In the Nineteenth Century the natural order of conservatism was challenged by new ideology such as Marxism and Liberalism. Conservatism was the norm and dominated Europe at the time so of course people were going to challenge monarchs because of their disagreement with the way they ruled. So I am here to show why conservatism is better for countries than liberalistic ideas. Also I will give sufficient reasoning why the conservative limits on voting should not change and why the limits are best for a country.
...ould harm it, while conservatives tend to oppose things such as the Clean Air Act for monetary reasons. Conservatives tend to support smaller government while liberals tend to want a larger government. Even though there are many differences between the two ideologies they both derived from classical liberalism. Some individuals refer to classical liberalism as the “best of both worlds” ideology. Both ideologies believe in hierarchies as an organization principle of society and both believe in the “middle class.” They both believe in the constitution and share many moral values. The two ideologies are very different, yet they are not complete opposites in every situation or argument. Many individuals have a hard time labeling themselves a ‘liberal’ or a ‘conservative’ because they may have liberal beliefs in one-area of politics and conservative beliefs in another.
Liberal is a word whose meaning has multiple connotations for many the word is synonymous with freedom and open-mindedness. For others, it refers to people and ideas that lack practicality and discipline. When the Puritan came to America in 1630 John Winthrop told them to be liberal in spirit in a way that was similar to the prophet Nehemiah’s urgings and Matthew’s teachings of kindness. He asked his followers to balance benevolent generosity for strangers with prudent care for their families. He felt that kindness and liberality to the poor was the best way to show God’s love and grace.
These coherent ideas make conservatism a legitimate ideology. The core beliefs of conservatism are tradition, human imperfection, organic society, authority, and property. Conservatists believe that change propels society into the unknown and creates a state of chaos and fear endangering happiness. To the conservative, tradition needs to defend prior institutions, placing a high value on past knowledge and the belief that those that stand the test of time ought to be protected. Creating a sense of identity and providing reassurances by practicing customs and traditions is strong conservative
