1. One of the most significant changes taking place in the past few decades, the one that has had a pronounced effect on millions of families, causing considerable concern, has been the movement of women into the workplace. This change has had momentous effects on women, on children, on men, on marital relations- on families. Since 1970s, according to the demand for low-paying “pink-collar”, women moved into those pink-collar jobs and into other jobs as well. The number of hiring women has steadily increased, so in 1960, 32 percent of married women in the labor force. By 1985, this figure had climbed to 54 percent, and in 2005, it stood at 61 percent. Work allows women to become independent, to develop a career, and terminate unsatisfactory marriages, and it gives them greater both outside the family and within it. When parents’ jobs are less secure due to economic recession, parents spend more time on working and cannot have less time to spend with their children. Consequently, today’s families are more isolated from their parents and get along with less support to one another than families of the past.

The two authors’ views on the subject differ greatly, especially regarding how gender roles have a significant impact on our society.
America has always seen as the symbolic ideal country of prosperity and equality. This is the reason why people come to America hoping to become successful, but in matter of fact we all have an equal plan field to be successful is not entirely true. For there are social boundaries that keep use limited based upon our own status. Whether we are born of a low class or of a high class the possibility of economic mobility in a sense are predetermined by two factors of social class and success together they both affecting one’s another opportunity of success. Thompson’s literary work, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, his viewpoint of the American Dream is expressed. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, written by Hunter S. Thompson, expresses the decline of society’s morals due to materialistic needs. Thompson proves through symbolism and characterization that society‘s corrupted perception of the American Dream provokes an individual’s morals to decline.
Robert Kuttner, the author of “The Politics of Family” also believes that women should not only be the caretaker but whatever they want in a career. Robert Kuttner’s text does support Stephanie Coontz’ arguments about the issues related to traditional values and modernity in American families during the beginning of 1890 and how they have changed and need to be changed in order for families to have strong bonds with each other, especially women who need more freedom to choose their own lifestyle. During this generation people reveal everything to the society. They are open about premarital sexuality, birth control and they don’t hide anything from the society.
Family structure in the United States has undergone a dramatic change since the 1960's. The percentage of female-headed households has increased tremendously while the percentage of married couple households has fallen. During the Great War and the huge amount of men that were deployed created the need to employ women in hospitals, factories, and offices. Among the many social changes that have occurred in the U.S. there have been many changes for Women. Women in today’s society are more independent and have more authority than previously. Men and women have become much more equal and these changes in society had a lot to do with the World Wars. As soldiers went off to war, women took over the jobs that they left behind. Women could now support themselves independently. As divorce became more acceptable and more common there were more female led households. This has changed the gender roles for women in the U.S., now not only are women domestic but they can be the breadwinners of their households. It is clearly evident that the change in the gender roles for women has influenced a change in families and marriage through the way women have more independence from their counter parts and how they have more authority within the family.
Historically, males and females normally assume different kinds of jobs with varying wages in the workplace. These apparent disparities are widely recognized and experienced across the globe, and the most general justification for these differences is that they are the direct outcomes of discrimination or traditional gender beliefs—that women are the caregivers and men are the earners.
