The Limestone City
Queen’s University is a public university located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Offering courses as rigorous as Harvard and a campus life full of diversity, Queen’s has it all. Queen’s University is one of Canada’s most prestigious colleges, offering a diverse and unique campus life, and a variety of disparate majors.
The university is in the vicinity of the city of Kingston, Ontario, which is a beautiful atmosphere for any campus. The campus is bordered by the Kingston General Hospital, student apartments, and Lake Ontario, making everything easily accessible for students. To make everything even easier for students, all of the main facilities are located

in the centre of the campus, surrounded by student housing, sports fields, and other private businesses and restaurants. As for halls and other buildings, there is also a range of history. The buildings at Queen's vary in age, from Summerhill which opened in 1839, to the new Queen's School of Medicine building, which opened in 2011. Grant Hall, completed in 1905, is considered the university's most recognizable landmark. It is named after Rev. George Munro Grant who served as Queen's seventh principal.(Queen’s University) The building is used to host concerts, lectures, meetings, exams, and convocations. This is important to students because it offers a variety of different buildings with a lot of history to use as everyday classrooms. Two buildings owned and managed by the university have been listed as National Historic Sites of Canada (Historic Sites). Many of the buildings in Kingston and Queen’s are made of limestone, hence the coined term, “Limestone City”(City of Kingston), which offers great scenery and atmosphere to students attending the university. There is a very broad range of majors at Queen’s University, from computing to life and physical sciences. To get down to it, they offer classes in creative arts, humanities, languages, social sciences, and interdisciplinary degrees. The Queen's School of Business has received significant recognition in the past years. The School of Business placed 48th in the world, in the 2012 Business Insiders business school rankings, making it a great school for anyone looking to get into the world of business(Business Insiders) For those looking to be in the medical field, look no further. In 2011, Queen’s opened a brand new medical building, that serves as both a class hall, but also as a clinic, allowing undergraduates to see what is happening, and for graduate and postgraduate students to get hands on experience with the real world of medicine. With such a prestigious school, it makes it hard to be admitted, but that just makes the experience all the better, as stated by Queen’s, “The requirements for admission differ between students from Ontario, other provinces in Canada, and international students due to the lack of uniformity in marking schemes,” (Queen’s University).
In 2013, 29% of applications to full-time, first-year studies were accepted. In 2013, the secondary school average for full-time first-year students at Queen's was 89% overall, with the Commerce, Education and Engineering faculties having the highest entrance averages at 91.7%, 90.8%, and 90.6% respectively (Queen’s University). The application requires a Personal Statement of Experience (PSE), similar to a resume, but only with the education experiences and involvement in community, and how they can apply this experience. It focuses on qualifications and involvement outside of academics and is an important factor in determining admission. Several faculties require applicants to submit a supplementary essay (Queen’s …show more content…
University). If one should get in, he would have to worry about tuition. However, at Queen’s, that is not a problem. With financial aid and plentiful funds for scholarships, no one should have to worry about not being able to afford to attend Queen’s. The average annual tuition for Canadian citizens is $25,000, while the average for international students is $45,000. However, Queen’s offers up to $19,000 in bursaries per student per year, making this college an option for everyone. Now from tuitions, this is the diverse student life.
The student body of Queen's is represented by two students' unions, the Alma Mater Society (AMS) for all undergraduate students and the Society of Graduate and Professional Students for graduate students (Queen’s Alma Mater Society). The AMS of Queen's University is the oldest undergraduate student government in Canada. The two organizations have more than 170 clubs in their jurisdiction. Some clubs include Quidditch club, Ultimate Frisbee club, and Performing Arts club. The organizations and clubs accredited at Queen's cover a wide range of interests including academics, culture, religion, social issues, and recreation, giving choices to all students who attend. The oldest accredited club at Queen's is the Queen's Debating Union, which was formed in 1843 as the Dialectic Society (Queen’s Alma Mater Society). The old student government, the Dialectic Society, fell apart in 1858, after the students complained of having a student government overseen by British officials. The Queen's Bands is a student marching band founded in 1905, which is the biggest, oldest, and most talented marching band in Canada. Fraternities and sororities are banned, as the AMS passed a ban in 1933 (Queen’s
University). Sport teams at Queen's University are known as the Golden Gaels. In most of their varsity sports, the Gaels compete in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) league. Varsity teams for both men and women at Queen's include basketball, cross country, Canadian football, ice hockey, rowing, rugby, soccer and volleyball. Every team has open tryouts, making sports an option for everyone. The Men's Rugby team has won the OUA Championship the past 3 years (2012-14). The athletics program at Queen's University dates back to 1873 (GoGaelsGo). The Golden Gaels football program has won 39 regional and national football championships, making them the most prestigious sports team in Canada. “Queen's and the University of Toronto are the only universities to have claimed Grey Cups (1922, 1923 and 1924), now the championship trophy for the Canadian Football League,” (CFL). Queen’s also competed for the Stanley Cup in 1894–95, 1898–99 and 1905–06 (NHL). Queen's University has a number of athletic facilities open to both their varsity teams as well as to their students. Richardson Stadium is the home of the football team, as well as many other events. The stadium is a great meeting area for many large clubs, as it seats 10,000 students, and offers a large playing area for outdoor clubs. The stadium has also played host for a number of international games including Canada's second round 2006 FIFA World Cup (FIFA)qualification games and the inaugural match for the Colonial Cup, an international rugby league challenge match (Philadelphia Gryphons). Other athletic facilities at Queen's include the Athletic and Recreation Centre, which houses a number of gymnasiums and pools. Every full time student has free admission and membership to the ARC, and part time students receive a discounted price (Queen’s ARC). Tindall Field is a multi-season playing field and jogging track and Nixon Field is home to the school's rugby teams(GoGaelsGo). To wrap things up, a graduating high school student should go to Queen’s University because it is so diverse in many ways, including campus life, the many different majors, and everything the surrounding Kingston area offers. Queen’s really is the best college up north.
At St. Ambrose University, the housing is mainly two bedrooms sharing one bathroom, instead of a communal bathroom. Private universities are mainly about giving a safe and supportive community that each resident can feel comfortable enough in to thrive. On top of the great housing, there are resident hall activities like volunteering. There are also over fifty clubs and after class activities available at St. Ambrose. There are academic, cultural, recreational and even more types of clubs and class activities available. St. Ambrose does its best to provide a home, away from home.
Gordon Parks was a photographer and humanitarian with a passion for documenting poverty, and civil rights in the second half of the 20th century. His signature style continues to be celebrated as one of the most iconic of the time.
(Listen first, then questions) Yes, it is true that most of Canada does have excellent schools, colleges that highly excel in a certain subject, gifted schools, and learning institutions, but our educational standards are not set as high as other countries. For example, in some countries,
Ana-Mauríne Lara’s Erzulie’s Skirt positions the female body as the scene where lives are interconnected across history and as a dissertation of the human condition. Her protagonists, Micaela and Miriam, tell a story of love, struggle, and survival that echoes the historical significance of slavery and the Caribbean middle passage across time and space. Divided into several sections based on time and location, one particular period in Lara’s novel connects Micaela and Miriam’s experiences most closely with slavery as a whole. After a voyage across the Mona Strait as an attempt to escape from the conditions in the Dominican Republic, they find themselves captured, trapped in a brothel, and forced into prostitution. Many parallels can be drawn to interpret Lara’s use of the brothel as a metaphor for the slave ships used to travel across the original Middle Passage, including the comparable use of people as commodities, the specific imagery and language Lara uses, the historical narrative presented at the beginning of each section, and the larger themes in which identities were simultaneously stripped by oppression and also preserved within the context of community and spirituality.
A monarchy is a form of government in which a single individual holds all the power in government. Since 1918 Britain has been governed in a Democratic system but held a lot of the same customs that it had when it was a monarchy (like a royal family etc.). Canada was a part of the British Monarchy when it was still around and unfortunately is still a part of the monarchy system that remains in Britain today. In 1867 the British North America Act was established and formed the Dominion of Canada by Queen Victoria. Since then Canada has grown to have its own customs and traditions but Britain’s crown is unitary throughout all jurisdictions in Canada. Queen Elizabeth the second is the sovereign of Canada she is the head of state; she must remain neutral politically in Canada and govern the people of Canada according to their respective laws and customs. The question too many Canadians today is whether or not Canada should abolish the British Monarchy in Canada. Many Canadians feel the monarchy is considered purely ceremonial and lacks legitimacy; attachments to the monarchy in Canada mostly just exists in older Canadians, younger generations in Canada have different views which support that the monarchy should be abolished in Canada.
Born 1939 in the Blue Mountains New South Wales, Vernon Treweeke was known as the father of Australian psychedelic art, and a pioneer in Australian human rights, activism and DIY culture (Haarp Media 2015). At age 11 Vernon’s father died in a car accident, which influenced him to start hanging out with the wrong people, which ended with him attending a boarding school in Bathurst alongside another famous Australian artist, Brett Whiteley (Wright 2010). After high school, Treweeke attended East Sydney Tech to study fine arts. Then moved to London as there wasn’t much happening in the Australian art scene.
The community of New Orleans faces many issues both school related and not school related. Due to the fact that in 2005 Hurricane Katrina destroyed as much as 80% of the city. Many parts of the city were below sea level and much of which were only a few feet above sea level, were flooded with water as deep as 25 feet in some areas. This storm damaged or destroyed more than 100 of the school district's 128 school buildings. During this time school reform swept through the city, taking advantage of the damage and transforming the area into a testing ground for charter schools. The majority of students attending public schools in New Orleans now attend independent public charter schools - making New Orleans the only city in the nation where more than half of all public school children attend charter schools.
There are many different opinions about the differences between faith and reason. Traditionally viewed differences between reason and faith are that reason is something that requires empirical, factual evidence while faith relies merely on, well, faith. For something to have reason it must have some kind of factual evidence to make it true, or at least very good sound reasoning to believe that whatever it is, is factual. Faith is far from something that attains empirical evidence, faith usually relies on personal accounts which are usually of mystical content. Many philosophers have different opinions about how the two can coexist; some say under no circumstances at all, while others claim they can justify each other, and some claim faith is reason alone. Some philosophers claim that believing in God is an obvious choice by the claim that just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there like Blaise Pascal. Blasé Pascal and Clifford offer two completely different standpoints on the role of reason and faith.

Hello, I’m Chloe Hayden and today I’m going to be conveying to you the untold stories of Wales’ capital city, Cardiff and how its history and growth is unlike any other city in the world. Although Cardiff is in the top 10 biggest cities in the UK now, it hasn’t always been that way. Events such as the world wars and the industrial revolution has helped greatly to develop Cardiff from a small town to a large bustling city with attributes to rival larger cities such as London, although both London and Cardiff have grown massively in recent years each city they have each adapted to its growth in different ways.
