The most important form of prevention is hand hygiene, and involves washing the hands with water and soap, or using an alcohol-based rub before and after patient contact (Hand Hygiene Australia [HHA], n.d.). Despite its effectiveness, the compliance rate of hand hygiene is poor amongst healthcare practitioners, because it’s time consuming in a busy clinic, poor access and is irritating to the skin (HHA, n.d.). To overcome this obstacle, it’s suggested that alcohol based hand rubs (ABHRs) should be accessible in work stations and near patients (HHA, n.d.). The purpose of this paper is to identify a quality safety issue. I will summarize the impact that this issue has on health care delivery. In addition, I will identify quality improvement strategies. Finally, I will share a plan to effectively implement this quality improvement strategy.
This literature review will analyze and critically explore four studies that have been conducted on hand hygiene compliance rates by Healthcare workers (HCWs). Firstly, it will look at compliance rates for HCWs in the intensive care units (ICU) and then explore the different factors that contribute to low hand hygiene compliance.
