In the lord of The Flies each character has certain characteristics that make him very unique. In this novel, Ralph, is a great example of a strong and courageous leader. In the novel Lord of The Flies by William Golding, Ralph presents many unique characteristics throughout the story, such as: his physical appearance, his military background, his friendship with Piggy, his ability to lead a group, his democratic way of solving problems, his loyalty to the group, and his will to survive. As readers know Ralph was the first character introduced in this novel, and is first described as being white, having blonde hair, and being a twelve year old British school boy. He is never one to make the group decision by himself, he always speaks with the group before he makes any decision. This is when his way of democracy is most important because he gets everyones’ opinions on all topics that are being discussed. He also says, “We've got to talk about this fear and decide there's nothing to it. I'm frightened myself sometimes; only, that's nonsense.” This quote shows his humility and his ability of being able to put himself on the same level as the other boys. Once the other boys know that Ralph is scared, but he knows that he should not be scared, they man up and gain confidence in themselves to be strong and not give up. Finally, Ralph’s motivation this entire book is to get off of the island alive. Throughout the entire novel he does countless acts to make sure he does not die on this island. For example, when Jack and all of the choir members go hunting, Ralph stays by the beach and builds shelter for the boys. Ralph never gives up even when, at times, it looks like he should. He firmly believes, throughout the story, that someone will save from the island.
