I had the privilege to observe a Nursing Research class at the baccalaureate level in Felician University. The setting was a regular classroom with 10 students sitting at their own desks. With full attendance, there would be 11 students, 1 male and 10 females. The age group varied and the students were of different cultures. The objective of the class is learning about the qualitative research method and how it is used in nursing. By the end of the day, each student should be able to analyze a qualitative research article. The students were informed of the objectives for the course when the syllabus was received and reviewed on the first day of the course. With each weekly class, the objectives for the day were announced prior to the lecture. …show more content…
With the variety of methods used in teaching, generational students could be accommodated; the visual using PowerPoint, visual & audio through YouTube, and the breakdown of explanations on the Smartboard. With this particular lesson, no concept maps were used. Perhaps a pictorial map with a visual of humor displaying the difference between qualitative and quantitative method would give a lasting effect to the students (All, 2003). With the mentioned learning styles, the students can use them as a reference when studying on their own. If time permitted, I would also add a form of collaborative learning, group discussions along with case studies as examples so the students can express their thoughts on what they are learning (Jeffries, 2005). The positive outcome would be their understanding of the content that could be interpreted within each other (De Young, 2015). Another method of teaching is to the active learner, the use of simulation, and role-play could have been introduced with the lesson if time permitted (Jeffries, …show more content…
I completely enjoyed watching, listening, and participating in this educational event. To observe an adult learner class following the Felician code of honor was rewarding. The relationship between instructor/student is one of respect. I did have a period of déjà vu, reviewing the material from the nursing research lecture class. This complex course is a major part of nursing, being able to read an article and understand what the author is thinking is a complex experience. I noticed the class was engaged and appeared eager to learn and understand the material by asking questions. When the students were participating it is because they were interested in the topic and wanted to learn. The students made it clear to me this course is difficult, the material was overwhelming. The student asked me,” how I survived nursing research?” I informed them they would need nursing research, from basic conversations with their co-workers, to planning events to raise the bar on their unit. The opinion of educators matter and the delivery of the material will set the tone on how the students would learn and retain the information that was given. The diversity of students also assisted with maintaining interesting conversations and allowing the students to share different point of views. The students clinical and life practices make interesting conversations and it allow the instructor to hear the students encounters with their

...ves with practice, it is important for students to gain knowledge about the skill and use them when on clinical placements. Learning these skills will also prepare the student nurses in future to delegate task when they qualify and become RN’s. In relation to my nursing practice, when I become a registered nurse, I will assist student nurses in their career by delegating tasks to them that are within their level of competence as well as making sure that all tasks assigned to them are duly supervised and follow up on the delegated task. I will encourage them to seek clarification where necessay. Providing feedback and praising them for work well done is another thing I would bring into my practice. I will equally inform them through feedback of any task which did not work well and show them areas where they need to improve upon.
Nursing research has been a part of the nursing profession for many years, consisting of both qualitative and quantitative research. It is essential in guiding nursing practice. Many nurses have a baseline understanding of research in general, but when conducting research it is important also to understand personal values and beliefs to guide the type of research to conduct. Understanding the differences between epistemology, methodology, and methods, will assist in this choice to conduct a valid research project.
Pettigrew, A., Dienger, M., & King, M. (2011). Nursing students today: Who are they and what are their learning preferences? Journal of Professional Nursing, 27(4), 227-236. doi:10.1016/j.profnurs.2011.03.007.
Authentic activities of learning are described as “tasks identical or similar to those children” and adults “will eventually encounter in the outside world” (Ormrod, 2012, p. 332). Activities for nursing students should mimic situations which will be used in their real life career with different activities developed by the educator to develop the needed knowledge and skills in order for the nursing student to make meaningful connections between classroom and skills instruction. Elements for the development of authentic activities should take into account if the “activity requires the students to work collaboratively and use their experiences as a starting point, allows the student to learn from their mistakes, does the activity have value beyond the learning setting and build skills which can be used beyond the life of the course, and does the student have a way to implement their outcomes in a meaningful way?” (Green, 2012, para. 2). Nursing faculty can provide authentic activities for students through skills labs, case scenarios, role ...
Realistically, most students are not privy to the winding journey of a nursing career. Students learn how to bathe, medicate, feed, assess, and some psychosocial concepts. However, there is no class that teaches or can teach students how to stand back and watch your patients struggle to help themselves, how to face your own mortal...
PROMPT 1 Middle and higher education are my work contexts as a teacher. Ethnographic observation seems to be hard to plan and apply since most of my students have a part-time job and they do not spend much time at home. Ethnographic observation demands a lot of time and planning. However, it is worth it since it provides teachers with the opportunity to develop themselves as researchers and to improve their professional practices. It allows teachers to know students contexts and the marginalized literacy practices they perform.
Nursing students at State University need better clinical experiences and better clinical sites. Clinical sites that have nothing to do or preceptors who don’t want to educate should be cut out and replaced with better sites. Ideally each clinical should allow nursing students to gain experience in critical skills and patient ca...
For the location of my naturalistic observational study I chose a public park with a splash pad which I frequently visit with my daughter. Since this site is quite popular with locals at any given time of the day there are at least over a dozen people present. As the park is designed for the entertainment of children the age group of the people varies. There are young children accompanied by their parents and grandparents as well as teenagers in groups. Therefore the above discussed park proved to be the greatest preference for me to observe the behavior of people in a natural setting.
Unfortunately, many lack tact and dive into things head first without providing a foundation for the reader to stand upon. The excitement to begin imparting all they have learned is endearing but ultimately, it is poor strategy. In order to understand anything regarding naturalistic observation and its research value, one must first understand the practice itself; both humans and animals can be subjected to naturalistic observation. The logistical issues tend to be availability of participants, ensuring that their privacy is respected, and whether the observations will be performed where the observer can be seen. Both approaches are used in animal and human naturalistic observation research. Being hidden, researchers are confident that those observed are not acting differently because they are being observed. This method effectively reduces or removes any chance of reactivity and this is goal, ensuring validity by allowing the subject to act in its most authentic nature without the interference of an outside force. Though this is ideal, there are times when observers cannot hide, and in those instances they must collect data over a long enough period to deduce whether or not their presence is affecting the actions of their research subjects. Privacy concerns greatly limit the use of naturalistic observation to places that are generally accessible to the public in the context of human observation but not chimpanzee, so the subject greatly effects the methodology.
Nursing is a profession that can be both rewarding and challenging at the same time. Some of the challenges are easy to overcome but others are complicated for the nurses to handle. As a student in the nursing program we are attending clinical sites for our clinical rotation. For example, two days ago I was at one of the clinical sites and the staff was short. There were only two nurses on the floor. Walking in that morning I can tell the atmosphere
...es need to be taught awareness skills, and given enough training to sharpen, and maintain them .Instructors should be firm but fair. This means they should be ready to correct their student’s mistakes without necessarily coming off as overbearing and this was demonstrated by the nurse. Student nurses must interact more with their patients by listening and trying to understand them. Although the patient might not know what’s best for them, they may have an idea of what is going on and might help the nurses understand issues better.
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
Knowledge and practice issues have a long-standing history in nurse education and are a continuous source of controversy to which there is no easy or perfect solution (Hewison, A & Wildman, S., 1996). This tension between theory and practice and research which can be usefully exploited in teaching and research (Rafferty, Allcock, & Lathlean, 1996). Emphasizing the importance of the issue (Rolfe, 2003), states that the theory-practice gap is felt most acutely by student nurses. The student may find themselves torn between the demands of their tutor and the practicing nurses. They are faced with real clinical situations in which they are unable to generalize from what they have learned in theory. This gap creates the biggest challenge for most of the new graduate. If we don’t step up and fix this problem of the theory-practice difference, it can cause a huge problem because the principles of practice established in curricula are not well aligned with the principles operating in the workplace. If this problem is not deeply addressed, it may be another factor on why new nurses are leaving the practice
Qualitative data analysis is the process of transforming data into information, information into understanding and understanding into knowledge (Davenport & Prusak, 1998). Furthermore, qualitative data analysis can be described as a blend of scientific studies and artistic style to create an innovative product. The research acts as the primary research tool, and must be able to sustain composer throughout the entire study. In addition, the researcher must be able to pay attention to the small details of the study, without losing sight of the big picture of the study (Chenail, 2012).
