Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs strive to ready student nurses for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) that tests not only pure knowledge, but the reasoning and application of that knowledge. These programs provide student nurses with the necessary knowledge base and ability to apply knowledge in practice; especially since the introduction of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) has been integrated into didactics. EBP, along with hours of clinical placement, benefit student nurses by arming them with the clinical judgment skills called for in the workplace. However, if student nurses accrue more focused clinical hours in their areas of specialty, they will be better prepared for the situations they will face in their careers for which simulation labs or nonspecific clinical settings fail to adequately prepare them. With more hours spent in specialty areas, student nurses will be able to establish higher degrees of mental preparedness and hands on experience as well as understanding of the difficulties and demands of working as a nurse in a specific field as opposed to shifting between various focuses of nursing.

EBP is a method of finding evidence and using it in practice: as Blaney (1986) states, it is used to assess health, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care (p.182). Finotto et al. (2013) breaks EBP down into steps as follows: Formulate a research question; find the most relevant evidence; appraise evidence; integrate evidence with clinical experience and patient values to make practical decisions; and evaluate the outcome (p.460). It is important that students have the ability of being competent in a clinical setting. To be deemed competent in skills according to nursing regulations and requirements. Evidenced-based practice (EBP) is utilized by nursing professionals all over the world to implement change in their current nursing practice. An advantage of implementing EBP results in a higher level of care that ultimately leads to improved patient outcomes. EBP combines the latest research evidence that is readily accessible to healthcare providers (Prior, Wilkinson & Neville, 2010). There are several benefits of EBP in the healthcare setting; EBP increases nurse’s critical thinking and decision making, confidence level, ability to adapt to change as they have to constantly evaluate the various researches that would support and be beneficial in their practice (Hanberg & Brown, 2006).
Nursing as a profession has undergone many changes with increased clinical research and scientific advancements. Nursing started out by promoting hygiene and focusing on patient comforts. While these initial components of nursing are still important to practice, the nurses today are required to have much more knowledge in body functions, pathologies and interventions. With increased scientific knowledge came increased demands for nurses to care for the sick and even more so now with an increasing aging population. Now there are specific educational requirements people must complete in order to enter into the workforce as a nurse (SHOULD ENTRY INTO NURSING BE BSN?). Currently, the three entry level positions as a nurse include Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN), and Bachelors of Science in nursing (BSN). While LPN’s are rarely encountered in the hospital setting as healthcare providers there is a much bigger ongoing debate on whether ADN prepared nurses or BSN prepared nurses are better suited to enter the hospital workforce. This paper will focus on promoting future nursing students to obtain a BSN instead of ADN due to increased research findings that nurses with BSN degrees have better patient outcomes, and better career outlooks.
Evidence based practice (EBP) is a key component in delivering cost-effective, high quality health care. [1] However, only around half of the care providers in the United States utilized EBPs. Additionally, nearly a quarter of services delivered to American consumers are unnecessary and potentially harmful. Today, educators are teaching and promoting evidenced based health care to future nursing professionals. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) supports this action as a means to achieve the objective that 90 percent of all medical treatments have a foundation in evidence based practices by the year 2020.
The BSN program helps the nurses in many ways including utilizing the process to the full scale and it will encourage nurses to use their skills like educating the patient as we’ll as creating new nurses. Because of the new health care reform, the BSN program will also aid in filling the gap from the influx of patients. The baccalaureate degrees and BSN program helps prepare students for the significant part they are going to play in reinforcing the new healthcare reform. At present, I utilize and develop nursing care plans in the nursing process, even though it needs some corrections due to the nature of my work. The highest standards of nursing can only be achieved through better research and advanced training.
