I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
My interest in pursuing a doctorate degree in counseling psychology has been influenced by a combination of life experiences and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Though the path which has led me to this destination is complex, the journey has provided me with the clarity and insight necessary to understand human behavior from a holistic perspective. As I approach the completion of my masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I am faced with the unsettling realization that I have more questions than I do answers. This has fueled my innate desire and motivation to continue challenging myself by attaining a doctorate degree from the University of North Texas.
I began thinking about how difficult it must be to try to function in the world with a mental disorder. As a result, I see people with a mental illness as vulnerable population that I would ideally like to help people with therapy. I found the dynamics of the human mind fascinating. Particularly, I found it exciting that the human mind is so influential in the development as well as the recovery from mental illness. Once I decided to major in Social Work, I began by taking the courses Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare Institutions. My professor informed me that if I got my Master’s Degree in Social Work, I would be able to become a mental health therapist, as well as help vulnerable people who needed assistance with maneuvering the criminal justice system. Since Social Work as a profession is dedicated to social justice and to service and empowerment of vulnerable populations...
I have always been drawn to serving others. I enjoy listening to the challenges people face and helping them arrive at a healthy conclusion. I take pride in advocating for those who are unable to advocate for themselves and genuinely care for every person who lacks access, or is denied access to services their community provides. However, I never thought of social work as a profession. I always thought psychology was what I needed to study in able to obtain my long-term goals of working in a school setting or becoming a therapist. It was not until my junior year here at Monmouth University, I realized psychology was not the right field for me. As psychology became a more research-based program, I began to examine social work as a major and explore the classes they offered. The Introduction to Social Work class opened up so many more opportunities. I finally understood the content I was learning and was able to apply those learning’s to the kind of work I potentially saw myself doing. In other words, I felt at home in the field of social work, like I had finally found my calling.
As a counselor-in-training, seeing the look on my client’s face after discovering a self-awareness and connecting thoughts to action provides me with a sense of my own professional progression. Through helping others, I have an increased self-awareness and appreciation for the relationships in my own life. Throughout this Master’s program, I was forced to self-examine my integrity, morals, and priorities as means for choosing on this profession. Another reward through counseling clients involves how I interact with professionals, clients, and family members. Utilizing active listening and feeling reflection outside of sessions has increased my own satisfaction to show others how interested and invested I am when talking with various
The choices we make early in life have an enormous impact on our future. I have always known that I wanted to directly impact people’s lives and my personal experiences have set me on the school-counseling path. In the future, I would love to influence another generation of students to soar for their dreams.
Sometimes individuals consider becoming counselors after overcoming some major life challenge such as addiction or a history of bad relationships. Perhaps an individual has encountered a particularly effective counselor or therapist and has a desire to follow in those footsteps. Others may have had a bad experience with counseling and concluded that it can be done better. People do not think of this work so much as a job, or even as a career. More typically, a constellation of life experiences that demand explanation and a sense that others seek one out for assistance and emotional sustenance become driving forces leading one toward the counseling profession” (An invitation to). .
Health and Human Service Professionals can work in a variety of work settings. They can work with children, adults, elderly, or work with people who have substance abuse issues. I recently discovered that Human services fall under two different careers. Human service professionals can focus on either career they prefer. Social Services is one; this career focuses on improving the quality of life for clients. This is a career that emphases on helping others. The second focus is a Mental Health Specialist focus. Mental Health Specialist work directly with people who are trying to change their behavior or achieve a better mental health outlook. Those who are interested in working as a mental health counselor must obtain
My first semester in college, I took a Psychology 101 course and immediately knew I wanted to work in this field. I was drawn into different theories and how individual’s minds work. I always believed I was born to help others and guide them to success in life. I desire to help others because of my own personal struggles with mental illness. My unique perspective on mental illness allows me to empathize on a different level with individuals. I desire to give back and support to the community the way it was there for me during my dark times. I was lucky to have known from the start that psychology was my interest. I am excited to continue my education in the counseling field and become a future Clinical Mental Health Counselor.
It is no secret that our country is seriously lacking when it comes to managing the mental health issues of its citizens. Not only are mental health services expensive and not covered by many types of insurance, but mental health care providers are not always easy to find. To this end I have developed a career goal that is not something I see coming with a specific job title or one that I can see reaching without the help of others. My career goal is to use my background in both information technology and psychology to benefit those in need and to expand mental health care services into communities that are currently lacking easy access to the services.

The primary reason I want to pursue a degree in clinical mental health counseling is because I want to be an effective counselor to adolescents in different environments. Throughout the course of my life, I have endured many challenges and navigated many obstacles. Surviving my dysfunctional home as a child and moving through the social and relational challenges in my life has molded me into a strong and determined student in any subject I desire to learn about. I had no strong role models during my childhood, and my familial relationships were shaky at best. Combined with the typical challenges of adolescence, such as inconsistent and toxic friendships, my life was not a smooth ride during my childhood.
A career that I have been interested for a very long time is in Psychology, which is to be a Counseling Psychologist. To be a Counseling Psychologist research is needed to receive a clear understanding of this specific career. For example, it is valuable to know what are the job requirements/duties, being paid hourly or salary, and if it is required to relocate. However, it is very important for me to know does it fit my personality, the exact year of graduation, what schools will I attend, how long it would take to complete my education and how much will my education cost. These are all-important material to be familiar with and are a journey that I am ready to take and experience.
My goal is to work in a mental health setting as soon as I graduate with my BSW. I would like to see if I should get my masters in social work or get my doctorate in psychology. Either way, I feel like I will be doing a great thing. As a professional, I want to help many people with their problems. I will encourage their opinions and ideas as well as help them form plans to better their
