I had to make a very big decision on what major I should choose to study for in college. Initially, I was interested in the Human Service profession. I knew I wanted to be in some sort of service industry. I really wanted to help those who need help from the government or from the city in order to better their lives. One career I was interested in which is considered in the Human Service profession is as a foster child case worker. I always wanted to work for Catholic Charities of NY as a foster child case worker. I thought it would be nice to start a career with them. Health and Human Service Professionals can work in a variety of work settings. They can work with children, adults, elderly, or work with people who have substance abuse issues. I recently discovered that Human services fall under two different careers. Human service professionals can focus on either career they prefer. Social Services is one; this career focuses on improving the quality of life for clients. This is a career that emphases on helping others. The second focus is a Mental Health Specialist focus. Mental Health Specialist work directly with people who are trying to change their behavior or achieve a better mental health outlook. a master’s degree. For a long time I really wanted to get a degree in Health and Human Services. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook has an expected growth of 22 percent by 2022. The job prospects are really positive for this career. However, after doing research on the career, I was discouraged by the salary that theses professionals receive. The salary range is in the low to mid 30’s. I don’t feel this salary compensates for the services that are rendered in this field. I am fully aware that your career should not be based on salary alone. Your career should be something that you are happy doing and fulfills you. I seriously took this into consideration while contemplating the Human Service profession. For me, realistically in today’s economy the salary range is not really appealing. I feel that the salary I make to be a crucial part of my future. In comparison, the Health Services Management field was more appealing to me. I feel that it would be a much more fulfilling career path and I could bestow greater rewards. In this major, I can still help people, however, it will be as an administrator. I can still work with a Foster care agency. I can also work for the elderly in a long-term care facility. I will learn how to manage and supervise case managers who are working with at these populations. In addition, I can work in a hospital. The opportunities are plentiful and the salary is very appealing, median pay is $84,270. The best paying states are New York $114,550, California $113,810, Connecticut $111,680, Rhode Island $110,930, and New Jersey $110,340. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this is a career with a bountiful future. Health services managers are responsible for ensuring health care facilities provide the most effective care for patients. This a career that is also multidisciplinary, I expect to have a lot of flexibility in my career path. I will still be in the service industry, however; at a higher level. Typically in order to become a Health Service Administrator you need to obtain a bachelor's degree.
Moreover; last year, I became a certified Medical Administrative Assistant. I think receiving a degree as a Health Services Manager will complement the skills and experience I already have. I feel that I will do well in a career as a Health Services Manager. I have a really outgoing personality. I am always willing to help those who need it. I consider myself to be culturally sensitive to all. Every opportunity I can get to meet new people from all different walks of life, I try. Health Services Management would be a good fit for me. Choosing this career was a very big decision for
me.
There are many different career fields you can go into as a social worker: from mental health, drug and alcohol abuse all the way to child welfare. Child welfare is my primary target when I become a social worker. I feel that I will have the biggest impact if I help the kids out that will be creating our future world. If I can help the kids of the next generation then maybe my influence will help more than just those few kids I see every day. Plus ever since I can remember people told me I need to be doing a job that helps children. I want to be able to make a difference in the community, and if I can help the kids, then I know I’ll be helping the community. Being a student at Wilmington College will help me fulfill these values and skills, but the thing that

What does it mean to become a social worker? Why was I committing two years of my life to school after renouncing further education? I asked myself this after I applied, waited anxiously for my acceptance letter and scrambled to figure out the finances after I was accepted. I could not have guessed that the first day of the Micro Human Behavior Social Environment (SWG 510) would capture my attention and thrust me into the professional world of Social Work. As I learned more about what it meant to become a social worker, I found myself aligning to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Ethical Standards as reviewed through Foundation Course I’s first chapters.

Perhaps one of the most versatile and diverse careers is social work, as this career works with individuals struggling with substance abuse, low-income families, and homeless individuals. Social work is a profession that is concerned with solving personal, group, and community relationships (Farley, Smith, & Boyle, 2011). Among some of the most important aspects of social work are the restoration of impaired social functioning, the provision of social services, and prevention (Farley et al., 2011). Reducing problems in human relationships and improving human interactions among individuals are the major focuses of this profession, regardless of which people group the social workers are serving (Farley et al., 2011). Even though it is a relatively new profession, social work has existed in various forms throughout history. However, the beginning of social work’s development as a profession was primarily European in origin, with the ideals spreading to the United States
My first semester in college, I took a Psychology 101 course and immediately knew I wanted to work in this field. I was drawn into different theories and how individual’s minds work. I always believed I was born to help others and guide them to success in life. I desire to help others because of my own personal struggles with mental illness. My unique perspective on mental illness allows me to empathize on a different level with individuals. I desire to give back and support to the community the way it was there for me during my dark times. I was lucky to have known from the start that psychology was my interest. I am excited to continue my education in the counseling field and become a future Clinical Mental Health Counselor.
There are many reasons why I would love to become a social worker. However, it is sort of difficult to pinch point how or why I became attracted to this specific profession. Nevertheless, most of the particles in my body argue that it would have to stem back to experiences I have encountered growing up. I would like to begin by saying that graduating high school I was unsure where I was going or where I would end up. My mother who always had high expectations for me persuaded me to at least attempt pursing a college education. I then decided to enroll Guttman Community College @ CUNY, where I was appointed a Student Success Advocate (S.S.A). My S.S.A saw something in me that I had yet to figure out. He pushed me to want more for myself both in my academic and personal life. Every time I was ready to give up he was there to remind me that I was capable of succeeding.
It is no secret that our country is seriously lacking when it comes to managing the mental health issues of its citizens. Not only are mental health services expensive and not covered by many types of insurance, but mental health care providers are not always easy to find. To this end I have developed a career goal that is not something I see coming with a specific job title or one that I can see reaching without the help of others. My career goal is to use my background in both information technology and psychology to benefit those in need and to expand mental health care services into communities that are currently lacking easy access to the services.

I want to pursue a career in social work because I want to help people who are suffering from mental illness and who are underserviced when it comes to getting help for mental illnesses. By working with a distressed person to become better, not only will I be able to enhance their life, but also the community will transform into a more positive place. I view transformation as a ripple effect, where changing the situation for one person eventually causes a change in the majority. This is especially true when it comes to mental illness and the stigma that surrounds it. I have been highly involved in mental health work on my college campus since my sophomore year. I am one of the founding members of our Active Minds chapter, and have held the
My personal mission is to improve people’s lives through medicine and care and make world a healthier place by using my skills and coming up with innovative ideas to manage healthcare organizations. There are two goals which need to be accomplished: One is the short term goal which is to be accomplished in a short period, say a year or few months. My short term career objective is to complete my Masters degree in Administrative Science with good grades which will reflect in my resume. Second is the long term goal: what I want to do in the next 5 years and where I want to be at the end of the fifth year by effectively shaping my future in an organization. My objective is to be a Healthcare Services Administrator of a healthcare organization such as hospital or public health department. My degree of Administrative Science with specialization in Global Health and Human Services will help me to develop skills to manage a healthcare facility effectively and efficiently, as well as my human resources skills will help me manage and work with people. This will guide me to achi...
"Do not become a social worker. You will not make any money and you will be stressed out all the time." My maternal grandparents were foster care parents from the 1980 's until April of this year. In that time they hosted over 250 children from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. As a child, I spent much of my time at my grandparents house and was exposed to the multiple aspects of the foster care system. I became close with the social workers who came to my grandmother 's house and when it came time for me to make a career choice, they all discouraged me from becoming a social worker. Despite their warnings I graduated with my Bachelor 's of Social Work from Saint Louis University in 2013 and began to work on my Master 's in Social Work in August of 2014.
Research is a necessity when it comes to providing services. Social Workers need it to be able to determine their clients ' needs, to see what resources/services they have access to and if their client doesn 't have much access where can they get it. Research is also used to see how effective an intervention is and whether it would be a right fit for their clients. It provides social service agents with ways to identify problems within their clients, communities, organizations, and the government. Also it helps them to create ways to aid in effective change. It is very beneficial when a social worker needs to "assess the needs and resources of people in their environments, evaluate the effectiveness of social work services in meeting people
However, after talking with my advisor I was told that I would be able to go into psychology with a bachelor’s degree in social work. My advisor also told me that the professions are similar. I took her advice and started a new goal, to get my BSW. Coming into my first class on the field of social work, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. All I knew is that the profession was connected to helping people. After learning more about the profession and the wide range of options that accompany it, I started to get excited. I could work with many different types of people on a range of issues and changing which area I work in would be relatively easy. I have always wanted to help people with mental health issues and I thought that social workers only did that in school settings. Learning that I just needed to get my Masters to be able to do therapy made me feel great about choosing to become a social worker. Having options has made my college experience better by getting me excited for what the future holds.
