Lately it seems as though more and more students are unsure as to whether or not they would like to attend college. With the huge cost of college, low employment rate of recent graduates, and many people achieving success without a college education make it so that many young people wonder if they should even spend the time and money to attend. The big question many prospective students ask themselves is what is the true purpose of college? So what is the purpose of college, is it simply to get a degree in hopes of one day getting a better or higher paying job? Better careers or more money may be a good enough reason to attend college for some but the college experience as a whole is what is more important to so many people. That may be the reason for many students but, since earning a college degree does not guarantee success; they should still consider everything else they can gain from attending. The cost of an education has risen significantly but students need to see how they can still get value from their education and not just see dollar signs in the form of a degree. College students need to find a way to get the best value from their experience in college by finding professors and programs that work for them. Schools need to help students by not just treating them as customers and pushing students into careers that are not for everyone. One way this could change for the better is by schools and school counselors giving students the encouragement to explore other options that may be a better fit for them. Colleges need to find a way for students to get both a great education and a chance to also have great experience. Tugend mentions that “the best programs combined major elements of a liberal arts education and professional training” (par.10). More colleges need to start developing programs like this to keep students engaged; doing so could keep more students from dropping out or choosing to not even attend college. Although, so many students think they can find success without a college degree, it is still a great asset to have in their future as a professional.
