Puerto Rico is a tourist attraction for their food, sights, and culture. Although many people believe Puerto Rico should become a state, I think it would be a costly decision with poor outcomes.
Adding another state probably benefits America as a whole, but hurts Puerto Rico as a state. The first reason is that if Puerto Rico becomes a state, their taxes will be much higher, and by opening Puerto Rico to the states it may lose its main income, tourism. So, higher taxes and the loss of tourism could cause Puerto Rico to suffer greatly.
Secondly, Puerto Rico’s main language is Spanish, but they offer English as a choice in school. If Puerto Rico becomes a state, they will be required to learn English, which will lose their heart of their culture
Puerto Rico becoming a state could benefit Puerto Rico & the U.S. Since Puerto Ricans cannot vote for presidency, have no representatives, and don’t get fair funding. If Puerto Rico became a state, they would have everything we do. Right now Puerto Ricans only gets half the medicare that the states get. 54% of Puerto Ricans have voted for a change (to be independent or become a state). If Puerto Rico became a state we would get a extra 20 billion dollars from the U.S. we would also get extra financial help. Puerto Rico needs tha...
The features of the formation of the Puerto Rican people under Spanish rule are therefore critical in addressing questions on Puerto Rican identity. The migration of thousands of Spaniards both from the mainland and its islands to Puerto Rico, the development of subsequent Creole populations, the formation of the agricultural sectors and their labor needs are some of the contributing features that will hopefully lead toward a better understanding of the complexities that surround the concept of Puertoricaness.
Language can bring people together but can also isolate. The United States is known as a melting pot, not only does that refer to culture but also the many different languages. We know of language barriers, but very seldom do we think of the language barriers within our borders. Even with the language barriers it solidifies the need for a national language, the United States of America should allow the freedom to express one’s culture while maintaining English as our national language, therefore offering common ground to its citizens.
Puerto Ricans will have more opportunities as a state and it would bring more federal help for PR. As a state, Puerto Rico will rise from the poverty since they are below the poverty line and American statehood could be the answer to many of the problems the Island is facing. Zach Patton, author of ¨Does Puerto Rico really want to be the next state?¨ writes, ¨Puerto Rico 's economy is in crisis. The territory of 3.7 million residents is now in the seventh year of a persistent downturn, a recession that 's much deeper--and broader--than the one on the mainland...Roughly 45 percent of Puerto Ricans live in poverty, three times the national rate. More than a third of the territory 's residents are on food stamps. Unemployment last year topped 15 percent¨. Proving that Puerto Rico could be beneficial not only financially but in many other aspects in which both Puerto Ricans and Americans can
Thesis: I am here to day to convince the class, why Puerto Rico deserves to be a state, by explaining the faults in its health care, declining financial status, and their limited involvement in the government
...ave to refuel making the trip, and could be seriously monopolized just for fuel. Military-wise, Asian countries would not be able to travel the Pacific Ocean to attack, leaving the U.S. relatively safe in its new Imperialistic force. Also, Puerto Rico lies east of the Panama Canal, which controls passage between the American continents. With America owning all Pacific Island territories, another monopoly is placed, and the Young Imperialist strikes again.
After the Spanish-American war, Spain granted the United States with full ownership of the island of Puerto Rico, which largely benefited the United States with profitable agricultural land, in the same way, Puerto Rican citizens were all benefited when they received U.S. citizenship, this granted them with greater opportunities that awaited them in the United States. However, despite their citizenship, Puerto Ricans are yet to have a vote in national U.S. elections. The ownership of the island has mostly benefited the United States as it is able to control the land, and impose tax and restrictions. Due to this, Puerto Rico transformed from a local economy, to one that is dominated by external U.S. companies. Because of many programs that have been implemented in order to stimulate economic development, the economy has progressed. However, one of the negative side effects left the population dealing with high income tax, as well as leading the economy further away from the local farmers and into the capitalist economy of the United States. It seems as if the relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico benefit the capitalist country and its economy but fails to befit much of the islands population as they are later faced with high income tax and high unemployment rates. Because of the high unemployment, the Puerto
There are several similarities and differences between the major ecosystems in Puerto Rico. Each ecosystem has unique and diverse plant and animal life. In Puerto Rico, you can find either several of an ecosystem or one. For example, there is one tropical dry forest (Guanica Dry Forest), one tropical rainforest (El Yunque), several coral reefs and seagrass and around four mangrove forests.
The Rhode Island Colony was one of the 13 original colonies in America, which were divided into three regions including the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies. The Rhode Island Colony was one of four in the New England Colonies, which also included the New Hampshire Colonies, the Connecticut Colony, and the Massachusetts Colony. The Rhode Island Colony was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, and was an English colony until 1776 when it joined the other colonies in a rebellion against Great Britain for independence. Rhode Island was give its name by Adriaen Block, a Dutch explorer who named it 'Roodt Eylandt' because of the red clay lining the island's shore.
The fundamental motive for leaving Puerto Rico was economic. The article "The Genesis of the Puerto Rican Migration" mentions that during 1878-1879 there was a major shift in capitalist mode from haciendas to sugar plantations. Around 1870 braceros and peasants began to leave the island to go to Santo Domingo, Cuba, etc... Under North American domination 1898-1901, Puerto Rico became an expansion in which allowed " for control of the means of production in the colony and the transformation of the "sugar islands" into exporters of products needed in the metropolis" (Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueño 348). To the United States, Puerto Rico became a means to gain more capital and power in the Caribbean. I agree with C...
Although it was never intended to be, the acquisition of Puerto Rico resulted in Puerto Rico becoming a colony of the United States, vis-a-vis the laws Congress passed and the nature in which the United States tried to "Americanize" the island. Puerto Rico was a colonial government in the hands of Spain, and although the Puerto Ricans hoped that with American invasion, more freedom would be granted. Unfortunately that did not change when the United States assumed control of the island. The social, economic, and political atmosphere greatly changed as well, and those changes were not necessarily for the better or better than what the Puerto Ricans had while under the control of Spain.
The American south is commonly known as Southern United States or simply the South. It constitutes a large region in the South central (united State) and Southeastern. The south developed its culture own, literature, customs, varied cuisines and musical styles. After civil war, South was largely distressed or devastated in term of its infrastructure, economy and population. It shifted from tobacco and cotton to corn, soybeans, and other foods.
Are you looking for a place to go on vacation with tropical weather and people with outstanding hospitality? Then the Bahamas is a wonderful place to start. I was born and raised in the Bahamas which is located of the coast of Florida. It’s a combination of different islands and rarely faces tropical storms. Growing in the Bahamas there are private schools which I was in enrolled in till I was sixteen that are much easier than the rigorous public educational system which eased up my transition when I had went to school in America. However, just as I grew to get to know America, American citizens and other people should get to know the Bahamas for themselves. Many tourist don’t visit and outsiders often misinterpret the culture and birthplace
One of the countries, out of two, that has ‘the’ in its name is The Bahamas. The Bahamas has a lot of interesting history and would be a great place to visit. The Bahamas is a great place to visit because of its many islands, history, multitude of animals and plants, and its wonderful climate.
For the past 3 days I don’t hear anything from my family in Puerto Rico. On Tuesday I have the last conversation with my in-laws and my sister posted in social media a prayer for Puerto Rico. That was the last time I heard from all of them.
