Are you looking for a place to go on vacation with tropical weather and people with outstanding hospitality? Then the Bahamas is a wonderful place to start. I was born and raised in the Bahamas which is located of the coast of Florida. It’s a combination of different islands and rarely faces tropical storms. Growing in the Bahamas there are private schools which I was in enrolled in till I was sixteen that are much easier than the rigorous public educational system which eased up my transition when I had went to school in America. However, just as I grew to get to know America, American citizens and other people should get to know the Bahamas for themselves. In the Out Islands of The Bahamas, the local Bahamians are eager to show off their islands, tell stories and point out the hidden treasures. They encourage you to explore. They want you to see the culture of The Bahamas. Heck, they’ll even take you around, whether it’s to give you a lift across a bridge or help you discover the hundreds of birds living in the tropical jungles. Many people are deceived that the Bahamas is a third world country because we rely on tourism in our economy. Though it is our main source of income, we are not in bad shape as a country. The largest industry in the country is tourism which accounts for 60% of the country’s income and half of all employment. Since the 1970’s research regarding tourism in the Caribbean has attempted to determine the social, cultural, environmental, and economic impacts of tourism. Much of the research has found that there are in fact many negative adverse affects, and Jackson’s article asserts that, “Governments often commit money and other resources to support the growth and development of tourism and often turn a blind eye to its negative impacts” (574). The reason why tourism looks attractive (and thus turn a blind eye) to these Caribbean countries is because of “its potential to foster GDP growth, to create employment, to increase foreign exchange earnings, and attract capital investment” (Daye, Chambers, and Roberts 2).
