Assignment #2 PSA Unlike traditional television and broadcast commercials, Public Service Announcements (PSA) are primarily designed to inform and educate rather than sell a specific product or service. The goal of a PSA is not to make a sale, but rather change public opinion and raise awareness for a problem. PSA’s are messages in the public interest disseminated by the media, with the objective of raising awareness, and changing public attitudes and behavior towards a social issue. The Public Service Announcement (PSA) “I Want To Be Recycled” is a PSA that uses an imaginary trip of a bottle that longs to see the beach. “I Want To Be Recycled” is part of the Keep America Beautiful campaign and shows that by recycling one plastic bottle, a difference can be made. In this PSA, a plastic bottle is thrown into the trash and is discouraged because she will never get a chance to see …show more content…
It appeals to ethos because it is ethical to recycle. The PSA also should make a person feel better that they are lending a hand to the environment to make it a better place. It appeals to pathos because the video shows the emotion of the plastic bottle and allows one to sympathize with an inanimate object. The communication style was appropriate and effective because of the emotional and ethical factors. It is convincing in telling its story and getting its point across in only 60 seconds and is entertaining to watch as well. A way to improve this message would be to have the recycling bin at the end placed in a more relatable environment. The noticeably blue bin is in a location that is difficult to pinpoint exactly where. The bin should have been placed on a college campus where students realize the importance of making the decision to recycle in their daily life. The 19-year-old boy at the end could have picked the bottle up outside on his college campus instead of in the middle of a vague
Reese’s is one of the most iconic brands of candy, beloved by Americans and known for chocolate and peanut butter treats. Yet, even the most beloved brands most advertise to maintain their presence, which is what Reese’s did in early 2009 when they released an advertisement that utilized a renewed awareness of global warming in the public. This came on the heels of the 2008 election, when President Obama won in a landslide with one of the main tenets of his platform being a focus on global warming. The purpose of this Reese’s advertisement is to to encourage their target audience, educated and liberal individuals, to purchase their Reese’s cups candy. Through the use of attention grabbing language, appealing imagery, and masterful ethos, Reese's appeals to an educated and liberal audience by relating its food brand with the
This advertisement from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) immediately affects the viewer’s emotions. By playing sad music in the background while images of scared and injured animals pass the screen, the creators of this advertisement are successful in compelling many viewers to open up their wallets and donate to the cause. Through the use of common rhetorical devices as well as less obvious strategies, this advertisement targets the viewer’s mind and succeeds in its goal of presenting the topic as a problem that needs to be solved. However, it is interesting to consider whether the problem that should be addressed is really animal neglect or something bigger, like the fact that many citizens prioritize
Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
Public service announcements are a form of advertisement that is made to appeal to emotions and logic to change the perspective of many people. In the article “Propaganda”, Edward Bernays states, “An automaton cannot arouse the public interest”(110). This means that without an addition of feelings, or pathos, in propaganda movements, it does not and will not work. To make people pay attention and remember what the ad states it has to appeal to feeling and cause them to think about what they saw, read, or heard and how they can change the outcome such as in
In the first article "The Curse of Water Bottles" the author is obviously trying to convince people to stop wasting bottles and recycle. For example "There are solutions like using your own personal water bottle and refilling it" and that would save from buying water bottles, and reduce some of the waste. It also states "Some cities are fining homeowners and businesses for not recycling" so that means even cities are trying to get people to stop wasting water bottles. Companies and/or states have tried putting rewards on the bottles if you return them, as stated "Some states have tried to put a nickel return fee on water bottles like those on soda and other beverages" but it still doesn't work out for everyone, because "grocery
Abstract- We are going to clean up the bars and restaurants of licking county, but we need your help to do it. Many bars and restaurants don 't recycle, getting them to recycle would make a huge difference in the community. As the reader take a minute to think of all the drinks that you have had at a restaurant or barn now think of all the drinks they are selling in the bars and restaurants and how much of a difference would be made if they were to recycle all of those bottles. We are going to get them to be apart of the R&B Recycling Race. Be apart of the solution, not the problem.
In video “THE GIRL THAT SILENCED THE WORLD FOR 5 MINUTES” I believe that this speech had a perfect moderation of all three appeals. She included ethos and the way she presented it was great because she is talking about how destroying the environment and going to war will affect not only the children but the entire planet, in other words we aren't only messing it up for ourselves but for every other species on this planet. The girl herself is only a child but she can say that she is fighting for her own future because the adults that teach us so much forget that if there is no planet there is no us, this makes the speech credible. She also uses logos effectively because she gives examples of how the earth has been polluted so much already that
If everyone recycled think of how much more space there would be in landfills across the world. There is only so much room on this earth and we are using a huge portion of it for our trash. Clearlake, California alone on a busy day can bring in 80,000 pounds of trash to the local dump. I know this because I work at the local dump in Mckinleyville. I also see a lot of people that throw away their recycling for the simple reason of being too lazy to sort it. I watch bag after of bag of plastic, aluminum, and glass get thrown into the bin which we haul straight to a landfill in Anderson, California. If everyone in Mckinleyville recycled there plastic, aluminum and glass they could save thousands of pounds a day from going to the landfill. I think people are not informed that waste is a big problem in this world. But in fact conservation is an issue, and resources and energy aren't too plentiful. Someday these resources are going to run out. But the more we recycle the longer we can make these resources last.
How much plastic do you think our world uses each year? In “Trim Your Waste”, the author, Sharon Kelly, provides more than sufficient details, amazing language skills, and just the right structure to put it all together to convey the ever so clear central idea. Kelly shows us in her text that she believes that through just a few minor changes in our daily life, we can save our planet, one step at a time. She uses the three significant devices, structure, language, and details to convey to the reader exactly what she means by all of this madness.
In 1947, plastic containers were first commercially used to hold liquids, but not until the 60’s were they consumed by the general public. At first, plastic was extremely cheap to make; however, in recent years the price to manufacture plastic has skyrocketed. In 2011 alone, over eleven billion dollars were exhausted in the fabrication of plastic water bottles. All this money fuels the creation of about fifty billion bottles worldwide. Sadly, Americans have become reliant on disposable plastic containers; consuming around thirty billion of the fifty billion water bottles produced each year. Many of the bottles end up being toss upon the earth instead of being recycled, which has been detrimental to the planet’s land, ocean, and air.
Promote social responsibility; recycle scrap water bottles and use recycled plastic in the production of our bottles
Even though many people say that recycling will help out our environment, they are wrong. This uniformed idea that people should continue to recycle, will only be a waste of time, since it really doesn't work. According to the article, it states, “Even the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says it only makes sense economically and environmentally to recycle about 35 percent of our trash.” This information proves that recycling doesn’t really work because this means not everything we use can be reused or recycled. For instance, the text also states, “Plastic provides another problem. Given the recent dramatic decline in oil prices, it is now cheaper to make a new plastic container than to recycle an old one.” To elaborate, now, people have been washing plastic in water that was heated by coal- derived electricity, which will result in more carbon in the atmosphere. The information provided, clearly proves that recycling will only be a waste of time, since it will hardly do any good to our environment. Therefore, this is an important reason that supports my position, due to recycling only being waste of time, since it really doesn’t
Have you ever wonder what can you do about the bottles and cans you find around you? People that doesn?t care about the world being clean is littering the place. It makes things very difficult to put up for. Recycling cans and bottles can help save the earth form waste and trash buildup and can make new things. I think that recycling should be mandatory and there should be recycling cans in various locations at school and everywhere else.
Preserving the environment is very important. One way that would be possible is by recycling. Recycling is the recovery and reprocessing of waste materials for use in new products. There are important environmental and economic benefits connected with recycling. Common materials that are recycled consist of aluminum cans, glass, paper, wood, and plastic (“Recycling”). Cleveland, Ohio joined the ranks of requiring recycling and also fines the homeowners for not disposing of waste correctly or leaving cans out too early or too long (McElroy 1). Michele McCay says that recycling is one of the easiest, most tangible ways of taking action for the planet (par. 1). If that is the case, why is it not required in all states? Recycling should be mandatory because it saves natural resources, it conserves energy, and it reduces pollution.
While walking through the park last Sunday, I observed a shocking scene. There were two cans: one for recycling and one for trash. The recycling receptacle had only an empty Dr. Pepper can and a few used Ozarka water bottles. On the other hand, the trash can had a plethora of half eaten meals, wrappers, banana peels and disgustingly even bottles, cans, newspapers and plastics that could have been recycled. Because people do not understand or do not care to understand about conserving our resources, many reusable items are being put in landfills when recycling these items could help save the environment. People should know the negative impact of throwing away a water bottle or newspaper, purchasing meat from the grocery store or consuming gasoline has on the environment, and many do not. By informing society about how their decisions affect the environment, we can help save our planet and change our attitude toward the land we live on, the water we drink and the air we breathe” and truly show respect for the stuff that we depend on.
