In Germany, for example, the advertising industry contributes 1.5% of the gross national income; the figures for other developed countries are similar. Thus, advertising and growth are directly and causally linked. As far as a growth based economy can be blamed for the harmful human lifestyle (affluent society) advertising has to be considered in this aspect concerning its negative impact, because its main purpose is to raise consumption. “The industry is accused of being one of the engines powering a convoluted economic mass production system which promotes consumption.”Attention and attentiveness have become a new commodity for which a market developed. “The amount of attention that is absorbed by the media and redistributed in the competition for quotas and reach is not identical with the amount of attention, that is available in society. The total amount circulating in society is made up of the attention exchanged among the people themselves and the attention given to media
Public service announcements are a form of advertisement that is made to appeal to emotions and logic to change the perspective of many people. In the article “Propaganda”, Edward Bernays states, “An automaton cannot arouse the public interest”(110). This means that without an addition of feelings, or pathos, in propaganda movements, it does not and will not work. To make people pay attention and remember what the ad states it has to appeal to feeling and cause them to think about what they saw, read, or heard and how they can change the outcome such as in

Is advertising the ultimate means to inform and help us in our everyday decision-making or is it just an excessively powerful form of mass deception used by companies to persuade their prospects and customers to buy products and services they do not need? Consumers in the global village are exposed to increasing number of advertisement messages and spending for advertisements is increasing accordingly.
Advertising is an effective and important tool for companies to bring awareness to their product. According to the Advertising Education Foundation, on average, a normal person is flooded with over 3,000 advertising messages a day (Boykin, n.d.). Advertising can be defined in multiple ways, one being that its main purpose is to solve problems without entertaining or potentially inspiring its audience. In some instances this definition may be appropriate; however, overall, I respectively disagree with this. Advertising is used to creatively persuade its consumers by using rhetorical strategies such as pathos, logos, and ethos.
According to the New York Times, many multi-modal texts expose the average person to at least five thousand advertisements a day (Story). In today’s world, ads are everywhere—on television, in magazines, and even inside cereal boxes. Ad Council, a non-profit organization, joins with various sponsors to produce and promote unique collaborations of public service announcements. The organization has found ways to stimulate action against many problems in the world that concerns Americans (e.g., texting and driving, dating violence, and child hunger). A public service announcement campaign is a message used to make people aware of the current issues that are happening and to try to get the viewpoint or input of the citizens to make changes. Whenever I saw public service announcements on TV, I would change the channel to a different station because I thought they were unimportant news and it was boring for me as a child to watch. As the years gone by, I started to realize that PSA’s are really important issues that people need to become aware of and it can help educate people on certain things.
An essential part of a public relations campaign is to ensure that the campaign has the overall affect of managing information to the publics (Boundless Business 2016). A Public relations campaign is a way to build and transfer a specific message or image towards the public (Wilcox et al. 2013). Books, research papers, articles, reports, thesis etc. were systematically studied to develop the following review of literature. The review included extensive use of Proquest, Google scholar, Inflibnet and IIM- A library. The review of theoretical literature and empirical literature helped develop the below mentioned conceptual framework. This structure underlines the sequence of steps, which were undertaken for the review of literature. The first step was to understand the concept of advertising. The second step focused on understanding the effects of advertising. Scan of literature helped in identify the types of effects advertisements are known to create. The third step involved understanding the extent to which organisations are committing their resources to advertising. As logic dictates that measurement of effectiveness is more significant where the resources committed are more, the final step involved study of effectiveness measures.
The advertisement project was a great learning experience on learning what it takes to produce a print ad, and getting harsh feed back from the consumer. The project exposed how hard it is to actually produce a good advertisement that will pop to the consumers eye and reel them in to have interest in buying the product your trying to sell them. In my groups jean print advertisement we used a method from Arthur Asa Berger’s book Ads, Fads, and Consumer Culture. We in particular used chapter four, “Running it up a flagpole to see if anyone salutes”, in this chapter Berger says choose a way you want to do an advertisement and do it. The consumer will either like it or not it’s a 50/50 gamble. All you can do is what you think will work and run with it. And that’s basically the approach we had from the minute we were posed with the project. Since we didn’t feel like playing the sex sells card, the group and I felt that chapter four of Berger’s book was the best to use to produce our advertisement. While we learned a lot from this project in understanding advertising and consumer culture, the aspects of the project ranged from the original concept to the survey results of the responses from consumers.

Advertising are able to create demand that would not exist just by manipulating people’s min and emotions. Advertising is master in manipulate reality and fantasy, by creating “magic show.” It is true that advertising has been a powerful mechanism that distorts our whole society’s values and priorities.
