Learning is an experience that all individuals are entitled to have access to. Public schools are a community where individuals can come together to interact. They allow individuals with the opportunity to communicate with a variety of people; each with different interests and ideas. Public schools are a part of an individual’s basic right, the first step in an individual’s future, and a responsibility that all students hold.
As individuals who will one day become the future of their own community, the importance of them receiving an education increases. Public schools are places where people are given the chance to learn. The ability to learn, improve, and explore different areas is innate. As children, we learn to speak and walk at a young age. As children mature, they learn more words and processes. These skills that we learn are a part of us and therefore are part of our basic rights. Public schools become the place where individuals are presented with the opportunity to explore new areas to find what they enjoy and learn about those particular areas to a point where they become experts at their field.

In order for students to reach their future, they have the obligation of respecting the classroom environment and completing work assigned to them. Respecting the classroom environment will benefit the individual and his or her peers by providing an area where people can learn peacefully. By respecting the environment the student is providing a place where people can interact amongst others about their interests and future. Now that public schools were commonplace in America, they needed to be altered to increase knowledge of students leaving them. Through reforms and political events, schools became not only a place for learning math and English, but also a place to learn other skills that will help students obtain jobs once they graduate. School was becoming essential rather than optional.

Schools are the basic foundation of knowledge, which is imparted to children. They give a chance for children to gain knowledge in various fields such as humanity, literature, history, mathematics and science. By obtaining knowledge, they are in a better position to know the world around them. A school is a society where faith and other values are developed. Schools also play an important role in a democratic social set up. Students of today are the citizens of tomorrow. Schools are the backbone of a society, where children interact with other children and develop certain social skills. Education in schools opens doors to various opportunities that would not be possible if it had not been for the knowledge one gained at school. However, in the articles, “Idiot Nation” by Michael Moore and “Against School” by John Taylor Gatto, the authors express their concerns about the degrading quality of education. There are many problems the education system is facing today, and several of them are having negative effects on the quality of the education that the students are receiving which are highlighted aptly by the effective use of rhetorical strategies by Moore and Gatto.
Why is it important to make our public education system stronger? The public education system is presented all over the world today, providing the intellectual skills, knowledge, and wisdom. It broadens the attitudes and acceptance of others who are different, the understanding of how everything really works, and prepares the possible challenges for growth. However, the education system has flaws; students are being treated unequally and till this day has not been changed. The public education system is a tool of empowerment, liberation, and success due to the diversity within the schools, the intellectual growth, and the self actualization. A student should remain in public school until he or she gets a high school diploma or GED because without either of them they won’t be able to get better job opportunities, go to college, and get a job with higher wages.

Throughout my experience in the public school system, I have heard the line, “What do I need to know this for anyway?” about 1,057 times. It is not uncommon to hear students complain about the worth of their education. Regardless, there seems to be a unanimous agreement that the youth needs education to succeed in life. What is education anyway and what does schooling accomplish? In his book, “A Time to Learn” George Wood provides a definition of education as “making wise citizens and good neighbors who can think deeply and intelligently about issues of self and society, take care for and respect others, take care of their family needs, and contribute to the welfare of others” (Glickman 48). Is school necessary for developing this type of educated citizen? If not, how is it we measure success and how is school important in attaining that?
“Against School, How public education cripples our kids, and why”, an article written by John Taylor Gatto states that the ideal of schooling is not providing the main objective to students as well as it should. The main reason of schooling is to allow each student to have the opportunity for an education. Johns argues that the education system in America is not providing the right education, as it should be. He says that what it’s actually doing to the majority of students, as well for teachers, is causing boredom and imprisoning children in a building, and labeling it as children obtaining an education. John Taylor Gatto argues that going to school is not the only way to gain a proper education; he states that it is not always necessary for students to attend school to be given an education.
There are many reasons for public schools. The rules however changed tremendously. When you walk into a kindergarten classroom today you see students learning their alphabet, their numbers, playing with others, and coloring pretty pictures. This is what education should consist of. Even though everyone bases everything around learning, it has to include fun to catch the students' attention. Education is so important because without an education you can't proceed in everyday life. When you're young, education is fun and then things get somewhat more difficult as you continue on throughout college. You wonder, is it really worth it, doing all this work just to make a living? Yes it is because if doing all this work can lead you to doing something you love then every minute is worth it.
Most people don’t see public schools as an issue. Reading through these readings I see that unfortunately our schools are failing some of our students. When reading A Place Called School Goodlad states, “Jencks went so far as to conclude that school reform could do little to reduce the extent of cognitive inequality among students. And he saw differences in schools as irrelevant in explaining differences in attainment among individuals” (pg.5). Clearly it says in the reading how some schools are not prepared to teach students. All schools need to have “equal education for all” which means giving all students the same equal education they deserve no matter what race or color they are. Every single student should have the opportunity to know about all the resources there are available in a public school because there are a lot more than people may think. In relation to equal education having the proper and same attention from the teacher is also part of it not only how they are being treated. Education is a huge part of the average American's life. Being the law, everyone must go to school from ages, of 5 to 17 or 18 years old depending on the person's birthday. This whole progress dates back to the late 19th century, making public school an invention well over 100 years old. Now if you take a moment to look at other inventions such as the telephone, the automobile, and the television, everyone in this world can agree on how from the original models to the version of today, unimaginable improvements were made. As the world and technology changes, so does the telephone, automobile and television. Now take a look back to the very first classrooms, you will see little to no change as our public education, over the 100 years that it has been alive, has not improved and has kept its odds original methods. Looking specifically at what public education has and has not changed gives our generation a real insight on how our public education system has not improved, but not closing an optimistic eye we can also see how our public school system can improve for future generations.

Many people in today’s society believe it’s wise to send their children to private schools. In making the decision on whether to put children in public or private schools, they look to four main factors: curriculum, class size, the graduation rate, and cost. When people have to pay for something, their first thought is, “Will I be getting what I’m paying for?” With a private school education, the amount you have to pay is usually well worth it. Public schools offer diversity. Here students can find people who are just like them and can associate better. Wherever you live, you have to send your child to the closest school. There’s no choice on what public school you can send your child to, whereas for private schools you can pick to send your child there. It’s not an easy choice for parents to decide, but many factors point toward a guarantee that a good education would be achieved, which is most important.
An accurate definition found in the Encyclopedia of American Education (1996) states: “Any elementary or secondary school under control of elected or appointed civil authority, supported entirely by public tax monies, and, with few exceptions, open to all students in a designated district, free of any tuition charges.” (780) These include elementary, secondary schools and vocational schools. Public schools are a good choice in education because they provide a wide variety of subjects to study, are diverse in their student body, available to everyone, yet can sometimes be misunderstood. Imagine sitting in a class, completely bored out of your mind. This is not difficult considering everyone has taken a class like this somewhere along the road of their education.
