What do you like most about being a college student/teacher candidate? What I like most about being a college student is all the people you get to meet. I have meet a lot of great people over the years that I will continue to be friends with after I graduate. Most of the professor’s that I have had really helped me to become the student I am today. 9. What do you like least about being a college student/teacher candidate? I prefer online classes instead of face to face. Being a single mom online classes are much easier for me because I can do my assignments when my girls are sleeping. 10. What do you really want me to know about you? (learning styles, areas of struggle, preferences, pet peeves, etc.) Sometimes it takes me awhile to grasp things. When I read I need to reread the material again to really understand it. I dislike being called on in class to answer a question. I may know the answer but I get really nervous and forget it. I have bad test anxiety. I could study all week long then when the test comes I am prepared but forget it all when I walk into the
These factors contribute to forward social movement and are only possible because of each person’s uniquely influenced life. Societal advances are born through conflict, necessity for change, and movement toward peace and understanding. Without unique individuals there would be no difference in the opinion threads of society, therefore, no need for change or advancements in technology or thought. Social memories are necessary because they create a chain reaction in society. Social memories create cultures that will influence an individual to have their own unique opinions. These opinions will cause conflicts between social groups and lead to a livelier world where we are able to disagree, but we learn skills that help us work together
A running record is described as “a tool that helps teachers to identify patterns in student reading behaviors. These patterns allow a teacher to see the strategies a student uses to make meaning of individual words and texts as a whole.” Running records are appropriate to use when a teacher is trying to focus on s specific learning area. Running records focus on one child. Running records are serve almost the same purpose as anecdotal records! There are always pros and cons to every type of observation or recording. Some advantages to running records are that they most useful on giving a naturalistic view of a short time in a child’s life. Some advantages to using running records are that the information is written down AT THE TIME that the
Throughout history different cultures and societies have shaped us to be who we are today despite differences most cultures worked together to get us to where we are in the world today. The way our societies influence our experiences help us to find our own truth which, in turn, adds to what we personally view as reality. Our different cultures and societies influence each other through our different languages, our thinking processes and our sets of knowledge. In unit one of World Experience we have read many different texts, most of them have the common theme that thinking, knowledge, and language all shape our societies and cultures and how we interact with one another and how it changes the way we perceive things such as reality.
Online school and classes have major flexibility in many aspects. For example, a student can accomplish their classes from their own home. It also does not necessarily matter the time of day that the student feels to do their work, so the student can make their own schedule. Along with that schedule, the student can choose the pace of the class so they can learn the material to the best of their ability. Also, online schools such as Florida Virtual School (FLVS) may offer more
Thornton, Stephen J.. Teaching Social Studies that Matters: Curriculum for Active Learning. New York: Teachers College Press, 2005. Print.
Over the course of the semester I have had my eyes opened to the world of social studies education. I have had the idea of being a teacher since I was in high school myself. In this paper I will assess the questions of what social studies is, how it is taught, and how I will use all of these things in my classroom.
To gain an understanding of political and cultural parameters and how they affect an individual and groups of people in the decisions they make.
I never thought that I would meet lifelong friends by going to school in a different city. Since being in college, I have met people who I can relate to physically, mentally, and socially, and people who have changed my view of the world. They have opened my eyes to new cultures, healthy lifestyles, and given me the chance to be myself without judgement. They were there for me when I experienced hardships last semester and gave me hope when I felt like giving up. They have truly assisted in making my college experience more memorable.
Building the comparison matrix exposed both the pros and cons of different social studies lesson strategies. There are many things to consider when deciding which path is the correct one. Each instructor will have to weigh the needs of the class with the benefits and flaws of the different strategies. This essay will look at the four learning options and reflect on the findings and the implications for curriculum design, and social studies instruction in meeting today 's standards.
Social studies is defined by the Board of Director of the National Council for the social studies as, the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. Within the school program, social studies provides coordinated, systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as anthropology, archeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics, and neutral sciences. The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
Social Studies is an often overlooked and under taught subject. Students find Social Studies to be boring, repetitive and not relevant to their own lives. According to research done and documented by Mark C. Schug, children do not think Social Studies is valuable or an interesting part of the curriculum (Why Kids Don’t Like Social Studies, 1982). When students do not see a purpose in learning content from a subject, they will become unattached and unmotivated in the classroom. Students need educators to explain the relevance and importance of Social Studies, so they are able to understand and get the most out of their learning experience. I believe that Social Studies is relevant and important to everyone, and needs to be taught and learned about by all people.
The Social Studies covers a very diverse fields of studies that focus on the “humanities, mathematics and natural sciences” (NCSS). With these diverse fields it is the objective to teach the student to understand and then create self-informed decisions that will have positive effects on society. This objective will help the student to understand why and how people react to shifts in society, geography, government, economy, stability, and so forth. When students understand the reasons and reactions to these shifts better and more informed decisions can be made when such issues rise again. This understanding will further cultivate cultural improvements for those who study and teach the Social Studies.
According to an Audrey Osler, there are 10 reasons why we need Social Sciences. After reviewing the article, I found several reasons interesting. The first, Science has played an important role in human development. Technological advancements have improved not only our health, but the way we live. The field of Social Sciences, which began to come of age at the turn of the 19th century, also played a role in human development. The various fields helped us understand how we perceived ourselves (Psychology), ho we interacted with our environment (Sociology), and even the human remains and artwork (Archeology: Paintings at Altamira) found began to paint a different picture of who we are. Branches of the Social Sciences like History, Economics, and Education also do their part assisting with Humanity’s advancement. The study of History can help society appreciate the richness of our/a culture and teach us about our past. The field of Economics helps society understand how the “wants and needs” of the individual members of the society can drive said society to develop different economic systems that can either improve or deteriorate not only their financial wellbeing, but in some cases, of low income minorities, even their health. Education encompasses a broader spectrum of studies, especially in EC-6. Education in these grades begins to introduce students to the Sciences (Government, History, Political Science, Social Studies) which will hopefully make them productive civically responsible members of
I agree that online classes are more effective than face to face classes for me because of my work schedule and other daily activities. However, I understand that some people can’t do online classes so I think it depends on the person. Online classes give students flexibility for realistic situations. There are many students who have other titles for example mothers don’t really have time to do everything so there needs to be time to do work on their schedule. Other students just have a lot on their plates to do face to face classes. Many believe face to face classes are a waste of time when you have to do most of their school work online. I would say the new generation teaching have a lot of school work online so why not just to all online classes. Online classes aren’t for everybody because you have to be disciplined on your studies and school work ethics. Face to face classes seems to be more comfortable to students because the convenience of getting answers answered and note being given by the professor directly.
Social science curriculum also looks at Geography where students are exposed to ‘the outside world’ one that exists beyond their own realities. Geography looks at physical and human process over space and time which assists in the understanding of the world around us. Students gain an understanding of spatial relations and patterns which is important for a student’s development. Geography also offers as a bridge between human science and physical science.
