What are the Social Sciences? This is a broad term that refers to the different fields of Science which study human society and the social relationships between members of such society. Social Studies is the elementary and high school curriculum that focuses on various branches of the Social Sciences Discipline. Social Science discipline encompasses many branches stemming out from Anthropology, Archeology, Psychology, Economics, and Sociology to name a few, it is a vast collection of knowledge and the fields all share one subject in common: Mankind. Social Studies in EC- 12th focuses on giving students the knowledge base that will help them be more productive members of society.

According to an Audrey Osler, there are 10 reasons why we need Social Sciences. After reviewing the article, I found several reasons interesting. The first, Science has played an important role in human development. Technological advancements have improved not only our health, but the way we live. The field of Social Sciences, which began to come of age at the turn of the 19th century, also played a role in human development. The various fields helped us understand how we perceived ourselves (Psychology), ho we interacted with our environment (Sociology), and even the human remains and artwork (Archeology: Paintings at Altamira) found began to paint a different picture of who we are. Branches of the Social Sciences like History, Economics, and Education also do their part assisting with Humanity’s advancement. The study of History can help society appreciate the richness of our/a culture and teach us about our past. The field of Economics helps society understand how the “wants and needs” of the individual members of the society can drive said society to develop different economic systems that can either improve or deteriorate not only their financial wellbeing, but in some cases, of low income minorities, even their health. Education encompasses a broader spectrum of studies, especially in EC-6. Education in these grades begins to introduce students to the Sciences (Government, History, Political Science, Social Studies) which will hopefully make them productive civically responsible members of
