For instance, the way that psychology is taught as an undergraduate and a graduate program in China verses America. Chinese students tend to choose to study abroad for psychology in America for the benefit of the numerous undergraduate and graduate programs that are offered all over the country. Not only does America obtain so many different programs, there is also an abundance of developing and available jobs in the field of psychology that are readily available in China. The two Universities that are being compared is the PeKing University (PKU) in Beijing and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) located in Central Texas. Some of the more obvious differences include that UMHB offers not only a Bachelors in Science for psychology, but …show more content…
UMHB is a religious institution so it requires that their students take a religious based class and PKU is a political institution and requires their student’s to take a political based course. These programs are not all different though, they do share some similarities such as their core courses for the undergraduate degree. These courses include: General Psychology, Statistics, Experimental Psychology, Psychological Methods, and Assessment and Evaluation. Along with that each institution requires that the students take a physical education course and multiple English Language courses to complete their degree. Chinese universities usually do not require a lot of homework and do not often have a lot of rigorous requirements for their students to complete an undergraduate program, but they do rely heavily on large thesis-type papers and final exams for their students to complete an undergraduate degree. The American undergraduate programs differ on the basis of their programs because American universities rely on reading the textbooks, weekly quizzes, peer assignments, group projects/presentations, and outside assignments such as interviews and
My mom would always say, “American born Chinese students have it easy in America.” One key difference between the American education system and Chinese education system is the way they are taught. Being raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I went to school to understand the idea of analyzing and understanding concepts. After reading Only Hope, I realized that their education is based on more memorizations. To Chinese students, understand the concept and apply it is not the most important, you must just memorize it for the exam. Many parents in China would say that going on vacation and relaxing is a waste of time because they need to focus on learning. In Greenspan’s article, it mentions that a student in China is the top of her class and is fluent in English, yet she cannot go on vacation because her mother wants her to spend time learning, many students in China
A situation can drastically affect a person’s behavior, motivation and overall attitude. There have been many psychological studies that demonstrate the strong influence a situation has on a person’s behavior. Economy, living conditions, education and treatment can have an enormous impact on an individual’s conduct and demeanor. The ever-changing situations of the 19th century in America posed a challenge for various groups of people. People were often put in demanding situations and most reacted according to their current environment.
1. Understanding pyschology has many explanations and ideas to figure out why humanity is the way it is. What are the six main perspectives all about? The biological perspective in pyschology examines the humans behavior in the brain, nervous system, endocrine system, and of course our genes. The way scientist study the biological perspective is that they look at the person 's family background, and past genes. So if someone has bipolar disorder the scientist will go back to see if anyone in their family once had bipolar disorder. So they can go back and see if they had some how inherited the behavior from their grandmother or father for example. Also biopyschologist will study to see
England created the colonies to generate additional economic value via access to new resources as well as products. However, England did not intend for these dependent colonies to develop an independent mindset. Through exposure to new religious philosophies, the colonies were able to further detach themselves from the Anglican Church. The composition of the colonies was altered by a great influx of culturally diverse people, creating yet another difference from English society. Additionally, the colonies developed a distinct material culture that encouraged them to function as their own economic entity. Tension between the colonies and England, created by religious, cultural, and economic differences, led to the colonies’ development of an American identity.
Social psychology is a scientific study that studies how people think, feel, and how they behave under the influence of other people (Aronson, Wilson & Akert, 2013, p. 2). Thinking about what social influence really means, we tend to think of a person who tries to persuade another person to acting a certain way. It can be a form of peer pressure, like taking that first puff of a cigarette, or it can be conforming to popular societal views, such as obeying the law of the land. Fiction is a great way to learn about social psychological perspectives. Watching popular theatrical films is the perfect way to learn because it illustrates the application of many perceptions within the subject of social psychology.
Your Vision as a Psychology Practitioner-Scholar Introduction One of my visions as a psychology practitioner scholar is becoming a clinical counselor. My purpose in psychology is to help people understand their life in a clear distinct way. I specifically want to target children and, help them grow and be more than they have the potential to be. I want to focus on the child development of children based on their environment. I want to be able understand children react the way they do in certain situations.
Both were established and partially funded by their governments and influenced by the news of the Open University of the UK. AU has a mission to make higher education more accessible. The OUC has a mission of making the citizens of China lifelong learners by making education accessible for all people of all ages. The AU and OUC focus on making education accessible to students that would not otherwise have access. AU focuses on university level education, but the OUC focuses on education for everyone. Both universities have given autonomy to the local branches of their programs in order to better meet the needs of the students. AU and the OUC have integrated technology into their programs, which makes the programs more accessible. Through both open universities students have the ability to use synchronous and asynchronous communication. Through both AU in Canada and the OUC in China, the people in each country have greater access to
In the world of cinema, there’s almost always a discussion regarding what scenes would be suitable for the grasping imagination of any audience, young or old. Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film, Psycho, sparked a plug for the movie industry as it was the first movie of its kind to display such graphic scenes of sex and violence to a worldwide audience.
However, demographic data can be tricky. “In 2004, less than 10 percent of Hmong, Laotian, or Cambodian adults in the US had college degrees”, while the number in all Chinese and Pakistani is a half (Golash-Boza). In addition, while Asian Americans consist of 6.2 percent of American higher education faculty, only 2.4 percent of them are in important positions, stated by the Committee of 100 in Higher Education Report Card (qtd. in Ruttiman).
American Studies can be a variety of different meanings to a lot of different authors. They are all pretty much on the same note, but with different alterations. For me, I believe that it is to make connections between the past and how it will impact the future. American Studies has transformed overtime. Each individual has their own beliefs and feelings of what it really means. In Gene Wise’s article he states how he is interested in how the field of American Studies has transformed overtime, what American Studies methodology is, and the types of questions that American Studies practitioners ask. I believe that there is no one way to understand America. For Gene, he begins to understand America by looking into the past. On the other hand, there was also the Linda Kerber essay that we had also read at the beginning of the semester.
The very first important development for a successful country is to have a respectable education system for those who need it from the first day they are born into the world. We have to instill what we want in our people to reflect how we want our to development to appear. In china their school system has more of a strict structure for example, at Harbin Number One High School; students begin school at 7:00 a.m., and remain until 8:20 p.m. The seniors, preparing for their final examinations, stay later, even until 10:00 at night.(Rybak) In a Chinese school the day are much longer than an American school day. This means that Chinese student spend a lot more time in school which bring us to conclusion that Chinese are more advantaged then the American student in long run. This prepares them for college or even the young adult can be bio-lingual. Most American student usually attends school for seven hours each weekday and may forget what they have learned because it in instilled into the young adults’ heads like the Chinese do with their students.
Psychology is the study of different behaviors and acts of each individual based on the way they are raised and brought up. Cultural psychology is specified as the study of behaviors and actions based on different cultures and traditions. The world is full of cultures. Each culture attempts to have its own psychological belief when it comes to different matters and events. Some cultures agree on some matters; while they disagree on others. Almost every culture view things differently. Yet sometimes they decide to accept these differences, and sometimes they do not. Also, some cultures view some psychological matters at the same level unexpectedly.
Discuss the social psychological approach in psychology and identify the kinds of questions that social psychologists attempt to answer.
Culture can simply be defined as ‘way of life’ of a group of people. It is about the way groups do things. There can be several ways of thinking about and studying culture. Gail McDonald studied the culture of America through four concepts that include “big, rich, new and free”. (McDonald)For this essay, I would like to define and analyze the American culture in terms of ‘freedom’. I selected this dimension because it has been one of the most distinct dimensions of American culture and it has contributed a lot in making what America is today. It will be interesting to analyze how this cultural dimension has contributed shaping the culture of the United States through the course of time.
Culture is defined the values , beliefs, behavior, and material objects that, together, form a people’s way of life while instinct can be defined as a biological programing over which animals have no control over, instinct can also be refereed as fixed, biologically inherited, complex human behavior patterns. Culture is a more effective strategy for survival than reliance on instinct because most human behaviors are as a result of social learning rather than instincts. Without culture society will not conform to a particular law.
