Throughout history the world has experienced different movie pictures, which incorporate different psychological themes. In Finding Nemo the audience is introduced to a clownfish named Marlin who deals with a multitude of psychological issues such as; stress, fear, and anxiety. Marlin refuses to experience the sea life, because it is so intimidating to him, and so he keeps his son from it. In the beginning , Marlin loses his wife to a shark, and then later on his son gets captured by a Scuba Diver. So, Marlin sets out on this adventure to find his son Nemo, and encounters another character named Dory, Dory deals with psychological issue of memory loss. Together they set out to find Marlin’s son Nemo, and along the way they bump into many different
obstacles, and characters which changed Marlin in some ways. In the end, Marlin and Nemo become reunited and Marlin has become a more calm, less stressed out fish, who is more open to the underwater life he was so afraid of.
The paper will focus on the story that was later adapted into the film Antwone Fisher. Finding Fish depicts the life story of Antwone Fisher, a man who rose above his painful past to beat the odds. The purpose of this paper is to apply the strengths perspective and systems perspective to Finding Fish. Growing up the movie, Stand by me, was kind of a staple in our family. My grandfather, mother and uncles often quoted movie lines. My grandfather said, if you want to learn how to be a good friend watch the friendship between Chris and Gordy in Stand by Me. So it was only natural for me to go to this movie when looking for examples of psychological concepts. Even though I thought I knew the movie like the back of my hand, I rewatched the movie in order to explain specific scenes with psychological concepts. I will discuss those concepts and scenes in this essay.
The human mind, only able to withstand so much pressure before losing control, is like a volcano. The harsh truths that accumulate throughout the course of one’s life can lead to devastation, the eruption of the mind’s volcano. American twentieth century author, J.D. Salinger, illustrates the devastating consequences caused by a buildup of emotions and a lack of communication in his short story, “A Perfect Day for Bananafish.” Salinger “has become, in biographer Ian Hamilton's phrase, ‘famous for not wanting to be famous’ ” (Stevick). In this short story, Salinger details the interactions of the main character, Seymour Glass, with Sybil Carpenter, a young girl. Through these interactions, Salinger provides the reader with a glimpse into Seymour’s unstable, troubled mind. Seymour’s demise shows the importance of true communication and the expression of such emotions. By releasing societal pressures and not allowing oneself to be plagued by materialistic ideals, one can truly achieve a stable state of mind. Through the use of symbolism, foreshadowing, and motif, J.D. Salinger's short story, “A Perfect Day for Bananafish,” communicates the theme that effective communication is often a monumental struggle.
In thinking of films that are able to exemplify many film elements that are put together in an interesting and organized manner the movie Rumble Fish comes to mind. The director Francis Ford Coppola demonstrates how metaphors are able to help decipher a deeper meaning of the film. Rumble Fish is a film that is about growing up and seeing new things that have never been seen before. The two main characters who are brothers Rusty James and the Motorcycle Boy, experience internal conflicts. Rusty James the younger of the two looks up to his brother and wants to be like him. However the elder has grown out of his previous demeanor of always fighting and he doesn't want his brother to follow in his steps. Throughout the film he ask Rusty James why he is following him. The Motorcycle Boy knows that his brother is somewhat trapped in the city and someone needs to get him out or set him free. He looks to the fish in the pet store to explain this and it is how he relates to his brothers problems. This is the scene that will be examined of when Rusty James is in the pet store with his brother and they are looking at the fish. It has been explained how much everyone in town looks up to the Motorcycle Boy, and on numerous occasions Rusty James said he was going to look like him when he was older. Even though the Motorcycle Boy never shows much affection, he wants something better for his brother, and even though he never tells his brother to leave until the end when he knows he is going to die, he tries to let him know through the fish. So until this point in the movie the viewer never really knows how the Motorcycle Boy feels about his brother.
First, after a hero has had a call to adventure they may refuse it. The refusal to call is usually the 3rd step in the hero’s journey. The refusal to call is when the hero has been called to adventure, but refuses the offer usually due to fear. This part of Finding Nemo is done well. After Marlin sees Nemo taken away by a scuba diver he tries to get him, but is too late. He however stays sad and alone, because of his fear of going out of the safe zone of the ocean. This shows that Marlin wants to get his son back, but he doesn’t want to leave the safe zone. He is having an internal conflict with himself. Should he risk going and getting killed or stay, but never see his son, Nemo again. This quote here can explain his not wanting to go rescue
At first glance, Pixar’s Inside Out seems to be your standard coming of age film. The film follows an 11-year-old girl, Riley who is forced to make a move from Minnesota to San Francisco with her parents. However, a deeper look at the film reveals how accurate it is to developmental psychology. The center of the story isn’t Riley and her family, but Riley’s primary emotions –Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust. The five emotions are personified as characters that control her mind as she transitions from childhood to adolescence and deals with the challenge of adjusting to a new place. Inside Out uses Riley and her emotions function as a demonstration of the relationship between emotion and cognition. For my video paper I chose to do a Pixar movie called Finding Nemo. Although Pixar movies are more aimed for the younger generations, it is becoming more popular for these movies to be introduced in the classrooms. In our DeVito text it shows and explains all the different forms of communication that can be related back to Finding Nemo. Along with other Pixar movies, they all portray many different aspects of communication. Nonverbal communication is presented in the movie by using gestures/movement. Although cartoon characters are not actually real people in the movie, they are created by real people who have experienced nonverbal communication in their lives.
The year is 2014. It continues to be evident that teenagers suffer from many different personality disorders. Many say that the hardest year of a person’s life tends to be their teenage years. A great film that displays students suffering from personality disorders is, The Breakfast Club. This movie is about five seemingly different teenagers in high school that all receive detention on a Saturday. Their mischievous behavior led them to be all together in the same room, on the same day. Interestingly enough, each of the students fit a particular stereotype, and many have the same characteristics. The only different aspect is how they express themselves.
Horney’s theory focuses on neurosis and the ideal self of the individual. Her theory plays an important role in the development of an individuals personality and can be applied to the film Precious directed by Lee Daniels. The film is based on an African-American teenager girl who lives in Harlem with her abusive and ruthless mother as well as the mothers revolting boyfriend. The role of the mother plays a significant role in Precious’ personality development and will be discussed further in the essay with regard to Horney and the following aspects of; social and cultural conditions, basic anxiety and basic evil, neurotic needs, coping strategies and the ideal self vs the despised self.
Like Schizophrenia, DID can be treated which would remove the visible effects in the present time( with the “author”). Pi Patel shows signs during the time on the boat where Pi exhibits multiple personalities, one as himself( Animal story) and one as Richard Parker(Human story). According to the Journal of Childhood Abuse, DID causes “the presence of two or more personality states or distinct identities that repeatedly take control of an individual’s behavior”(Maya Reed-Gavish, Dissociation in Abuse Victims). Pi Patel demonstrates this fact in multiple different situations. At the end of the book when Pi is being interviewed by the Japanese men he demonstrates his two personalities in the different versions of the story. With Pi alone on the boat(Besides his animal hallucinations) he has another personality who lives the “human story”. In Pi’s first personality he acts as the other version of himself: Richard Parker. Pi claims that “I found myself kicking in the water in the Pacific ocean. I swam for the lifeboat… I wouldn't have made it if the cook hadn’t thrown me a lifebuoy and pulled me in”(Martel 303). In Pi’s other personality, the as himself as an oceanic tiger tamer he claims “He [Richard Parker] was to far. But the sight of the life buoy gave him hope. He revived and started beating the water with vigorous, desperate strokes”(Martel 98). Both of the Japanese Men notice the similarities between the story and possibly helped Pi find a therapist after the end of the story. Pi’s multiple personality have some side effects that, in his delusion, Pi is able to notice. One of the Major side effects of DID is to have a blackout where the victim “...[has] amnesia, or "lose time," for periods when another personality is "out."”(Minddisorders.com).
