Teen depression can best be described as a severe medical complication that affects the way a teenager thinks, feels and acts. Hopelessness takes over the entire human body and creates emotional, functional and physical problems. Every human being experiences depression in their life, but for some, it’s impossible to overcome. Not only does it have serious consequences and long-term treatment, but it cannot be overcome with willpower. Those who believe there is no way to cope with depression attempt suicide. Extremely depressed teens escape from the pain by ending their lives (Staff). Suicide is the third leading cause of death between the ages of 10-24 and approximately 4600 die each year. This kind of treatment is when the patient talks to a trained and licensed professional to find out what may be causing the depression. Normally, this type of treatment triggers the depression using a combination of heredity or chemical imbalances in the brain. There are many benefits when using psychotherapy. Specifically, it helps the patient recognize the behaviors, emotions, and ideas that contribute to the depression and learn new coping skills and techniques to change it. Also, it develops new ways of thinking, ways in which faulty thinking may perpetuate depression, negative attributes and attitudes someone has about themselves. The benefit for psychodynamic are thought to be broader-based and more prolonged. Unfortunately. this type of therapy is carried out within months to even a year and it's difficult for patients to accept that factors outside of their awareness influence their thoughts and behaviors. The therapist acts like a teacher, guiding the client through processes of learning how to change their way of thinking and then how to act on that learning. When an individual with depression changes the way they determine a situation, it also changes the way they feel and act, resulting them to feel better about the situation. Since this therapy is more focused, the treatment generally lasts shorter than others. More people prefer this type of therapy because they to try to use the more directive skills learned in a time-limited. Unsuccessfully, some patients don't prefer this method because positive thinking feels too beneficial to them and they don't receive the results they desire. Studies have shown displayed that this type of therapy alone is very effective when treating depression. Roughly 60% of patients showed improvement (Shute). There are two different types of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which include, rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). REBT works by focusing on the way emotions alter thinkings and actions. This helps the client realize that the power of negative emotions can change the aspect of their thinking, normally resulting in overreaction and loss of perspective.
