In the regular sentence order of English, the subjects come before predicates and verbs come before objects. In English, there are variations in sentence order. Although these variations cause some confusion, a speaker of English can use them to highlight an important point in the sentence. For example, a speaker uses a cleft sentence as a way to focus on a special element on the sentence. A cleft sentence is a complex sentence in which a simple sentence is expressed using a main clause and a subordinate clause. Pseudo-cleft sentence and it-cleft sentence are two major types of cleft sentences.
It- cleft sentence is defined as a construction in which some element in a sentence is moved from its normal position into a separate clause to give it a greater emphasis. The form of an it- cleft sentence can be illustrated in (a). It-cleft sentence consists of it, a form of be ,a focus noun phrase, and the rest of the sentence which is placed in a relative clause. In the construction of it cleft, it is assumed that it has no meaning. It is a copula that has a functional role of linking the major constituents of the sentence. If we take, for example, a sentence like sentence (b) below , we can put more focus on the subject by using an it-cleft sentence like sentence (c). Moreover, if we take for example, a sentence like sentence ( d) below, we use an it –cleft sentence to stress an object noun phrase.
(a) It+ be+ focus+ clause.
b) John studied English literature at Oxford.
c) It was John who studied English literature at Oxford.
d) It was English literature that John studied.

2. Follett explains that the type of grammar we need is traditional. A traditional approach to grammar involves an emphasis on syntax. Syntax deals with how words relate to each other in a sentence. This knowledge of how words work together provides the type of logical analysis necessary to speak and write correctly. An emphasis on syntax demonstrates the conservative view that language is an art of expressing meaning.
Many times, when an author writes a story, he will use different techniques to influence the way that the reader absorbs the work. Writers use both paratactic style and syntactic style. These two styles contrast each other greatly, but on the same term, they greatly compliment one another. In the book The Things They Carried, O'Brien uses both of these styles. In this essay, syntactic and paratactic style will be examined in the story "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong". Examples in the story will be examined and described according to the two styles of writing. The syntactic style will be focused on more intensely however, because of the way that it effects the sections of the story that will be discussed. It will also show that the historical context of the story effects the styles of writing.

Syntactic inversion is the change in the style of a sentence. A proper sentence is subject followed by a verb and ended with an object. Syntactic inversion reverses this order and has the sentence be object followed by verb and ended with subject. The purpose of syntactic inversion might be to deliberately moving us from the ordinary world or to imitate latin syntax. An example of this in Paradise Lost is, “Of man’s first disobedience...sing Heavenly Muse.”

Syntax is the study of how words are combined to create phrases and causes in the sentences of a specific language (Freeman and Freeman, 2014). Syntax helps us to make clear sentences that “sound right,” where words, phrases, and clauses each serve their function and are correctly ordered to form and communicate a complete sentence with meaning. The rules of syntax combine words into phrases and phrases into sentences. Not only does it focus on the correct word order for a language, but it also helps show the relationship between the meaning of a group of words. Without proper syntax, a sentence can be meaningless. It is key to understand that while every language does have certain syntax, the syntax does vary from language to language. It
