Female Prostitution should not be legitimatized

Prostitution which is sometimes known as commercial sex is the act of having sexual relation in exchange for money. It dates from the World War 1 during the slavery period where the slaves were sold for such purpose. The main reasons why people indulge into prostitution is poverty, history of sexual assault especially when at a minor age and others are just immoral and want to explore. It was mainly associated with women but in the current generation, due to increase in poverty, low level of education among other factors, even men and children are out in the street to exchange their sexual rights with payment. Female prostitution should not be legitimatized since it has negative health implications to those trafficking and is also an act of violence against women.

Prostitution predisposes the prostitutes to psychological disorders. Prostitutes suffer severe emotional health problems such as sleeping disorder, stress, anxiety, and others experience guilt and regrets. “The chances of a prostitute committing suicide are six times that of a normal person.” (Ole Martin pg 74) .Surratt Hilary and his colleagues study on Miami sexual workers indicated that “out of 278 commercial sex workers interviewed, 52.9% suffered depression which the psychologists termed as severe. This had resulted from history of both sexual and physical abuse from their line of business as street based sexual workers.” (Surratt H 30).

Prostitutes are exposed to sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and AIDS. Some of their customers demand unprotected sex and depending on the offer that the prostitute is given, they carry the deal without having protection as a priority. Janice Raymond indicated that “...

...le it is true to say that not all prostitutes are exposed to brutality, sexually transmitted diseases and psychological problems, the act of making prostitution illegal will cause financial instability to the traffickers since they will be denied the right of choosing their source of income. The sexual workers will result to doing the business illegally to be able to acquire funds for buying drugs.
To sum up, prostitution should not be legitimatized. It is clearly indicated that it is a major source of sexually transmitted diseases, physical assault resulting to injury, drug abuse, infertility as well as unwanted pregnancies. All this have negative implications to the society directly or indirectly. The overall country’s health status is poor due to poor quality of health. There is low life expectancy as a result of the diseases and drug use among female prostitutes
