This quote draws attention to a current controversial issue in the United States. This controversy revolves around the decision about if police officers should wear body cameras or have dashboard cameras in their vehicles to increase both the officer and perpetrator’s safety. The safety of police officers in the United States needs to become a priority. While some officers currently wear body cameras and have dashboard cameras, there are many who do not. This is a major issue that needs to be addressed by the entire nation. While this subject is currently getting a lot of attention, there are not a lot of solutions surfacing out of the arguments. A study done on cameras in 2012 helps support this, “In 2012 in Rialto, California a study was taken on whether police body cameras were useful or not, The study shows that the cameras did indeed have a calming effect” (Ripley). The use of cameras gives the officers a calming effect, therefore making them more confident. Police officers can do their job more effectively if they are confident going into the interactions. Police officers are also more calm when they are equipped with the cameras because they feel more safe overall. Officers safety should be a priority, therefore the cameras are very important. An opposing viewpoint on this topic is that police officers should not need the cameras to feel confident and safe. This is untrue because in today’s society, police officers are not respected, therefore, they do not feel completely safe.
