Higher Education Time. Time is a big factor in a college student 's life. Should colleges have open house hours? There are several pros and cons to having longer open house hours. Not only are there for athletes but regular students as well. Having these open house hours can affect students in different ways. If colleges did not have open house hours or a curfew, there would be many benefits for the students. College students are young adults. If they are not treated like adults, they will not behave or act like adults. Thus, will not grow to become responsible adults. Hesston College has open house hours that start at 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on weekdays and 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. on weekends. Looking at schools around Hesston College …show more content…
Having longer open house hours or no time limit on open house hours can benefit the student’s relationships. They would have more bonding time to make their friendships stronger. Students lives would be happier and less stressful if they did not have to worry about whether or not their friends from the opposite gender can be in their room at certain times. Sometimes students just need a friend to talk to late at night, or a shoulder to cry on when things get tough, especially since we are young adults just leaving home. We deal with quite a few changes in our lives trying to adapt without our family being around, so having friends is going to be important, and we should not be limited on when they can see each other. When college students do break the open house hours’ rule, they get fined for it. Now at Hesston College if students break open house hours the first time they have to pay 50 dollars then every time after that it increases $50 (Residents). Often the college students do not really care how much they get fined because they are already paying the school $30,000 a year to go to school here anyway so what is another 50 or 100 dollars (Residents)? They might argue that the fines are put in place to try and stop college student from breaking open house hours, but in reality it does not matter how much they try to make the college student pay for breaking the rule They will still do it. College students are already broke. Fining them will not help. College students are adults, they should be treated that way. College students deserve to have longer open house hours to have more social time and to make long-lasting friendships. College students spend most of their time doing school work, so having a little extra time will help the students in the long run. Helping them have more of a life than just school. Making memories. The main goals of going to college is to further the student 's education, make memories and to transition into being an adult and to be treated and act like an
When a young adult decided to go to college they have a very big decision to make about what their future will hold and where their future will begin. Once the decision has been made and college has begun, new friends are made and the actions they do shape who they will become. Weekends come and go, but the decisions that are made are different for each and every individual that attends college. There are those who choose to stay on campus and spend the weekend doing things around school with new friends, others choose to go home for different reasons, such as being homesick and wanting to be with family or spending the time off of school for work to help pay for tuition, also there are the students who choose to go to other institutions to see new friends they have made or visit old ones from high school. What I am attempting to understand is with my target population, is not only what the group chooses to do with their weekend time, but also to try and understand why they choose to do what they do with that time.
Also a big point that most students like to attend to high school is because of prom and all the fun activities they do at their senior year. As a college student you stop caring about things like that and start caring more about getting excellent grades at school so you could graduate. now that you have greater responsibilities you would not always have free time as other normal high school student indeed you would most likely have projects or homework during the weekends or during the breaks. But all of us know that we have to leave unnecessary things in order for us to progress
Going away to college is a great way for people to meet new friends and experience new things. Usually a setting unlike their home will help them with both of these experiences. While this may not be true for everyone, I believe everyone should try living in an area unlike his or her own. This is what develops a person intellectually and socially.
Another restraint to college athletes working is a time restraint. College athletes have very busy schedules they follow and when finished with their schedules they are left with very little free time. Student athletes are required to take a minimum of twelve credit hours to start the semester and required to pass at least nine credit hours by the end of the semester. With this standard having to be met, the athletes are spending hours studying and attending class. Besides from studying and attending class the athletes then have to go to practice. Going to practice and participating takes up about four to seven hours of the athlete’s day. After all of this is completed, the athletes are left with only a couple of hours for them to enjoy time with their friends or even to just relax and watch a movie. But, because these athletes are college students and do not receive any money for their commitments they are supposed to squeeze time in for work in. If athletes apply for a job they are limited to only a couple of hours a day to work. Also a large number of jobs request their employees to be available on the weekends.
Students tend to choose to attend high schools that are closer to their home, so they can have access to easier transportation. That being said, students in high school come from the same area. In high school, there are fewer clubs and organizations. Because faculty runs clubs and organizations, if a student wants to create a club, it usually takes a long time because they need the approval of their teachers and faculty. Since students abide by their parent 's rules and live at home, they have little to no social life outside of high school. In college, students are independent and therefore have to be careful of their
In high school, the teacher pretty much babysits the students. The teacher always has to get on their students to pay attention in class, to do their work, and to stay awake during the lecture. Also high school teachers don’t really expect their students to read ahead in their textbooks. In college the professors are very different. College professors expect the best from their students, because they know that their students are spending a very large sum of money in their education. The professors expect their students to read their textbooks before class, and to do their homework. They also expect their students to stay awake during the lecture, if not they will kick the student out. College professors don’t care if a student doesn’t turn in their homework or if they forget to read a chapter in their textbook. College professors are not worried about this because it’s not their grade, they already have their degree. Also, college professors won’t accept any late work. They also are very strict on absences and most college professors will rarely give any extra credit to replace a student’s absences. This is one of the reasons why high school teachers and professors are not the
President John Adams once said, "There are two kinds of education. One teaches you how to earn a living. The other teaches you how to live” (Adams). I agree with Mr. Adams and I think colleges should provide both types of education. Calling for students to complete community service hours will build the grounds on which they build the rest of their lives. However, many people don’t even give community service a chance. They say they’re too busy, it’s not for them, or simply choose not to do it. At my high school, we were required to complete thirty two hours of community service for graduation; many students came to love it.
College can be a scarce transition for individuals, especially for the ones who have lived at home their whole lives. While college is said to be one of the best experiences, there are negative factors that eventually add up. Students who live under their parents roofs or attend high school, usually have their day-to-days lives planned. A typical day in the life of a student may be going to school for eight hours, participating in an activity after school, coming home to a home-cooked meal, and going to bed. Where, college is the first year a student may experience more independence and a non-planned agenda. Most individuals know when going to college they’re going to miss the familiar feeling of their hometown, home-made meals, and their own
I would agree since there are lot of more entertaining things to do, but it doesn’t mean I would rather be happy now and procrastinate later. It all depends on how an individual perceives their environment to be on top of their class. If someone doesn’t want to attend class because they are better on their own that’s good for them, but it doesn’t always work. As long as they study hard enough to get the grades they want to see on their report card. A student’s dorm is actually for me, the one of the best places because of its solidarity with the other students especially on the students with the same field of
College students can have it way easier because they can save up for a car or even for a house while living in one of these households. I know a few friends who go to Chaffey College that do not go to work, but only school have they live in a house with their family. With other college students, sometimes they won’t have to worry about paying rent because their parents understand they are going to college and work at the same time while going to school. I have always been against going to school and working at the same time. There was one month when my brother, Jacob, was not able to pay rent. Everyone let him slide because he is part of the family and they understood that college students such as him do not get much money. Meanwhile in other places, people would probably get kicked out for not paying rent to their
At a high school, there are many things to offer such as auditoriums, lunch rooms, computer labs and science labs. Along with these things sports are offered too, among those sports are basketball, soccer, baseball, football and various running sports. While students benefit from these extracurricular activities there are rules to be obeyed such as the school dress code and cell phones are not permitted during school hours. While in college it is a little different, you get treated like an adult and you have a bit more freedom. College students take advantage of this freedom of roaming and exploring the campus. For example, college kids can freely take out their cellphone without it being taken up at any given point in the class. “In high school, your day is typically planned for you, including where and when your classes meet and what time you eat lunch. College gives you significantly more freedom in building your schedule and choosing how to spend your time” (Kori Morgan). Along with extensive freedom offered at the college level there are other things offered as well, like sports fields, theatres and concert halls most of those things are unheard of in high school. Whether college kids are in class they could easily be hitting the books hard in libraries or just relaxing in the campus café. The choices are endless in
College requires you to have the time and effort for it. For things such as, studying, working on group project, going to school events, writing a paper on an event, etc. Without time you and your grades will suffer. Not having enough time for school is a main reason why a lot of students do not make it through a semester. Sometimes twenty-four hours in a day is not enough for me. When it comes to homework and studying, the only time I
Students living on campus don’t have to worry about time because they live in the college. On the other hand, students who commute to school, have to worry about getting to class on time. Students living on campus don’t have to waste money on transportation or food since it is all covered under a plan. Unlike commuters, who aren’t covered under a plan, they have to pay more money to get to school as well as for food. Students who live on campus tend to know more people and they know more about what’s going on around campus. However, students, who commute, don’t have that advantage because they are home most of the time. Living on campus can be more beneficial than living at home in many ways.
People say it is worthless and a waste of money to have their children attend college especially if they are still immature and only care about partying and getting as they say “Turnt up”. According to the article “With College, Only the Motivated Need Apply” the author had stated “The new reality is that sending immature children to adolescent amusement parks full of hot tubs, climbing walls, and food courts is a costly mistake that can ruin their lives”. But it is not anyone 's fault but their childs if they choose to mess up their education and party all night long. Like the article states “It depends on the kind of student you are talking about” the author points it out himself that not everyone has the same intentions when they are at college. Others actually go to college to get an education to have a better life once they are out of school. If they are not willing to learn, no one can help them. If they are determined to learn, no one can ever stop
First positive externality I face on campus is staying inside because everything that I need for studying is near: faculty, library, pavilion. It does not take a lot of time to get from my college to faculty or library.
