Unit 5 Discussion1 Adolescents that misuse drugs and alcohol are usually treated in a group format. (D'Amico et al., 2012, p.994). Motivational interviewing can be quite successful in treating teens that are misusing drugs and alcohol. The counselor use of this technique creates a safe and non-judgmental atmosphere for the by engaging in a simple conversation. The counselor asks open ended questions allowing the client to view the pros and cons of their behavior. Motivational interviewing provides a joint approach to problem solving. According to (Lewis & Osborn, 2004) Solution focused therapy and motivational interviewing has gained much popularity within the last 20 years. The two styles offer the client’s voice to be heard. MI focuses on
a person’s strengths and capabilities which empowers people. The MI method focuses on a person’s strengths and capabilities which will empower people. Counselors use reflective statements and shoe empathy towards their clients. The AA model focuses on what is wrong with you and highly encourages members to follow certain steps to move into recovery. I have personal experience with the AA model; it is successful if the member is willing. Parents and teachers might have a few questions about the approach and success rate that I would use in treating teens impacted by drug and alcohol abuse. 1. What is the difference between Alcoholics anonymous groups versus motivational interviewing approach in treating drug addicted teens? The MI method focuses on a person’s strengths and capabilities. The AA method often times has the member looking at what’s wrong with them rather than what’s strong. 2. Will the teen relapse? Relapse is not a requirement to recover. If the individual is tired of the life style they were leading it will be motivation to remain clean and sober. 3. How can I make the person accept treatment? Teenagers are at a stage in their lives when they are coming into exercising their independence. Threating a person will not work it will only make the teen more resistant to change. 4. How long will the person have to be involved in treatment? Treatment is on an individual basis. 5. Should there be resources in the schools for teens to get help? Yes .There should be education provided for teens that are using substances. All schools should have counseling services at the school for teens.
Equally important, therapy for parents with children who abuse drugs, participate in treatment interventions in a therapeutic setting with the Family Therapy Model, using Cognitive Behavior Therapy or CBT. The main goal of CBT is to improve family relationships by promoting sobriety and correcting the erratic or destructive behaviors/patterns, which aid in a person’s addiction. The goal is to educate family members about triggers, in the event of a relapse or erratic behaviors that resurface. In the event, families can resolve conflict in a positive way and recognize future erratic behaviors, before it's too late. The definition of motivational interviewing (MI) has evolved and been refined since the first publications on its use as a way to deal with behaviour change. The technical therapeutic definition of motivational interviewing is a collaborative, and goal oriented method of communication with giving specific observation to the language of change. It is intended to reinforce an individual’s motivation for and development towards a particular objective by evoking and investigating the individual's own arguments for change (Miller & Rollnick, 2012). The case scenario is of a homeless young guy named Jim who appears to have an intellectual disability. Jim is addicted to marijuana and abuses alcohol and has suicidal thoughts. He has anger control issues where he is known to verbally threaten others. He currently has a counsellor who he had established a therapeutic relationship. From these sessions, the counsellor has learned that Jim had been physically abused by his stepfather. From reading this case scenario about Jim, it is evident that he would benefit from several different approaches or interventions including motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy.
What is Motivational Interviewing? Motivational interviewing (MI) is a patient-centered method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change health behavior by exploring and resolving ambivalence. What will be discussed is how can organizations help the patients change negative behavior to a positive behavioral change, diminishing the lack of motivational behavior. The Motivational Interviewing film was very informative. I was able to get a clear understanding of what is to be expected by the therapist during a session. The film explained the therapist should engage in reflective listening, develop a growing discrepancy, avoid arguing with clients, roll with resistance and support self-advocacy. Miller believed that this approach was far more effective than traditional methods, where the therapist pushed for change. The Solution Focused Therapy approach concentrates on working with the individual to determine a problem and then determine solutions to the problem (Content Guide 3, n.d.). Essential aspects of Solution Based Therapy include: introducing new perspectives, grasping the adolescents point of view, identifying one’s strengths, and holding the adolescent accountable by having them explain their exceptions and feelings (Content Guide 3, n.d.). The various techniques utilized in Solution Based Therapy consist of: clearly defining the problem and stating measurable solutions, asking open-ended questions, exploring actions that “make a difference”, addressing the importance of change, giving feedback, complimenting, giving the adolescent “homework” exercises, and lastly tactfully using supportive and respectful language towards the individual (Content Guide 3, n.d.). The strengths of Solution Based Therapy include working with the adolescent to recognize smaller problems that lead up to their overall problem of substance abuse (Content Guide 3, n.d.). This is because many adolescents do not think nor view their substance use as an actual issue (Content Guide 3, n.d.). Limitations/ weakness of Solution Based Therapy include an individual being reluctant to define any problems that they think are contributing to their substance abuse, therefore potential solutions can not be identified, and this is the

Throughout the years, many researchers have designed many interventions and social policies designed to treat people who have used, abused, and became addicted to substances. Today, there are many new studies that address substance abuse at the individual, group, family, and community or policy levels. Today, there are many services that are effective for decreasing recidivism in youth who have completed a substance abuse program.
