Decision making can be involved in every situation we experience, even when deciding what to eat for lunch. People and companies are surrounded by countless decisions on a daily basis. Decisions can be contemplated in different ways from different perspectives. By definition, decision-making is the selection of a procedure to weight alternatives and find a solution to a problem. Needless to say, certain situations may require various decision making styles in order to provide effectiveness. It involves people who are action oriented and decision makers who focus on facts. People that acquire a directive style present low tolerance for ambiguity and are oriented towards task and technical concerns when making decisions. This type of leader can be very rational, but will think on the short term. Some of the pros from the directive style demonstrate efficient, logical, practical, and systematic approach when solving problems. People with a directive style are action oriented and decisive and like to focus and derive their decisions based on facts. On the contrary side, people with this style are sometimes perceived to be autocratic when pursuing speed and results. They also tend to exercise power and control, while focusing on the short run. Conceptualists are concerned with long-term results, brainstorming of alternatives, creative approaches to problem solving and taking higher risks. They take a broad perspective of a problem solving and like to consider many options and future possibilities and rely on intuition and discussion with others to acquire information which can see as a negative aspect for many companies. Understanding how people arrive at their choices is a field of cognitive psychology. Theories have been tested to explain how people get influenced while making decisions in the present and future. Heuristics1 have been researched to understand the decision making process.
In an effort to formulate the most appropriate decision making process it is important to examine the four different models available to the decision maker. Rational, bounded rationality, Intuitive and creative decision making are all effective paths toward achieving resolution and can be executed by different leadership styles. Looking at the problem facing the email blast procedure at Vail Health Foundation, rationality as a decision making model will garner the most effective results considering all the variables involved. To best examine the effectiveness of such a model it important to analyze the rational decision making approach.
Each decision-making strategy has advantages and disadvantages and none are always better than the others. An effective team leader will consider the options and determine which strategy is the most appropriate one for the issues to be decided and the circumstances in which the decision is to be made and implemented. Outcome-oriented businesses need leaders skilled at decision-making. Decision-making styles are neither good nor bad. The effectiveness of any decision-making style depends on the situation in which it is used. Performance is enhanced by integrating all styles, by finding the style that works best in particular project, or by being able to move intentionally from one decision-making style to another.
In this theory leadership style changes as needed to ensure that the goal is achieved (Huber, 2014). Each situation may need to be addressed differently, which requires flexibility by all involved, especially leadership. Managers need to evaluate every individual to understand what they are capable of and how they fit the needs of the institution and or situation (Nash, 2015). As a nurse I think this is a very important trait for a leader to have because of how quickly things change and how we must work within our environment. For example, in healthcare we sometimes have to allow others to take control of a situation on to ensure the best possible outcome for each patient. In addition, the manager needs to ensure that each person works within the scope of their practice, functions at the highest level allowed and completes their tasks. To be a successful leader in healthcare and achieve desired outcomes requires a high level of flexibility by leadership. I would also say that the contingency theory would also fit into my leadership style. The basis premise of this theory is that each situation is different and leadership needs to take that into account when managing a situation (Huber, 2014). At times a leader needs to look at the bigger picture and incorporate that in their decision making process. When looking at a specific situation taking input from all parties involved can lead to a more effective solution. We can learn a lot form those around us and need to take that in account to be an effective
Autocratic leadership theory is a part of the behavioural approach. In this leadership theory, leader makes all decisions and uses power to command and control the followers to achieve goal. According to Lewin(1939), “autocratic leaders are associated with high-performing groups, but that close supervision is necessary and feeling of hostility are often present” (p.173). It is incredibly efficient and tasks are completed quickly. Autocratic leadership can be beneficial when decisions need to be making quickly. For example, in emergency situation surgeon uses this theory because the patient’s situation is between life and death and there is no time to discuss with other members. Bass (2008) mentioned in the Leadership styles and theories article, “Autocratic leaders can be effective because they create good structure, and determine what needs to be done. They provide rewards for compliance, but punish disobedience” (Giltinane, 2013, p. 35-37).
In Dr. Spencer Johnson’s book, “Yes” or “No”; The Guide to Better Decisions, a young man embarks on a hike with a group of other people. During their journey, they learn to make better and more effective decisions using a system called the “Yes” or “No” system. This seemingly effective system focuses on the need to “focus on the real need” rather than focusing on one’s immediate desire. Dr. Johnson’s method via the anecdotes of the people in the story assist in creating better decisions by demonstrating how the decisions you make will affect you long term rather than the immediate gratification of choosing what seems to be right without any complex analysis of the outcome. The DARE decision making model can make your problem so much easier and puts it into a series steps. Those steps are define. When you define you are figuring out the problem or situation.The second step would be,asses.When you asses you are figuring out your choices or the things you can do to solve your problem.
