Are you aware that in the town of Northampton we are a DARE community? In fifth grade this year we have teamed up with officer Konetsky to participate in DARE. DARE stands for drug abuse resistance education.Officer Konetsky has giving us very useful knowledge to use in our daily lives, some information we cannot use till were a little older. One of them being how to respond to peer pressure. Peer pressure is when you are pressured to do something you know is bad but you're a very pressured. Another being how to make safe and responsible decisions. When you make safe and responsible decisions you are making a good decision under peer pressure. Peer pressure and making safe and responsible decisions go hand and hand.We have learned facts and also ways to avoid drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco, and violence. Another thing we learned was bullying. Bullying usually occurs if you either had a dark past with that person or they are jealous. We learned to report and how to notice when bullying is happening. Some ways to report bullying is to use anonymous note, ask the bully to stop,or maybe even tell an adult. …show more content…
The DARE decision making model can make your problem so much easier and puts it into a series steps. Those steps are define. When you define you are figuring out the problem or situation. The second step would be,asses. When you asses you are figuring out your choices or the things you can do to solve your problem. Then the next step would be to respond. When you respond to the problem you are making a choice with one of the choices you have assessed. The last step would be to evaluate. When you evaluate you go over your choice to see if it was a good choice or not. These four steps will definitely help you and me in the
The first step in using the technique is to diagram the sequence of decisions and chance events that the decision maker faces.”
The four simple steps taught me how. Making decisions will be significantly easier if I utilize the DDM. I know that the D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model will be beneficial to me even as I grow older and I am grateful that I have learned such a useful tool to implement in my life. D.A.R.E. has taught me useful techniques, tips, and strategies that will undoubtedly impact my actions in the future.
One should remember that not all peer pressure is bad, although that is mostly what you see today. Good peer pressure needs to be done more, because why would you want to make someone do something bad, instead of helping them do something good and impacting them, because honestly who would want a worse world rather than a better one? Truly the way to improve our lives as human beings lies on peer pressure, it is at the core of ways we can make a change for a better, and not more for the
It will help them do better in school and accomplish life goals and dreams. Adolescents know the right response to say no when they are being peer pressured.
Bullying, often dismissed as a normal part of growing up, is a real problem in our nation's schools, according to the National School Safety Center. One out of every four schoolchildren endures taunting, teasing, pushing, and shoving daily from schoolyard bullies. More than 43 percent of middle- and high-school students avoid using school bathrooms for fear of being harassed or assaulted. Old-fashioned schoolyard hazing has escalated to instances of extortion, emotional terrorism, and kids toting guns to school. It is estimated that more than 90 percent of all incidents of school violence begin with verbal conflicts, w...
One of the most important reasons of teenage drug usage is peer pressure. Peer pressure makes drugs seem popular, makes you have a fear of being an outcast, and since everyone is doing it, it is the "cool" thing to do…right? Wrong. Peer pressure represents social influences that effect adolescents, it can have a positive, or a negative effect, depending on person's social group and one can follow one path of the other. We are greatly influenced by the people around us. In today's colleges, drugs are very common; peer pressure usually is the reason for their usage (www.nodrugs.com 1). If the people in your social group use drugs, there will be pressure a direct or indirect pressure from them. A person may be offered to try drugs, which is direct pressure. Indirect pressure is when someone sees everyone around him using drugs and he might think that there is noth...
In today’s society, we all need just a little push and that may come from parents, friends, or bullies. This push is necessary in order to mentally prepare children and teenagers alike for the world which is full of mean and disrespectful people. This world has no place for those who have a weak mind or cannot muster up the strength to assert their will. When I say that people need a push, I do not necessarily mean a positive one. When people think of bullying in a modern context they think of a group of children surrounding a single child throwing insult after insult while getting physically abused. Once people see this image in their mind they think of it as nothing but negativity and fail to see it in a positive light and that is the simple fact that getting bullied is merely a form of constructive criticism which is necessary evil in terms of building character.
These patterns identify relevant cues, deliver expectations, identify goals and suggest types of reactions in familiar situations (Johnson, 2012). In the fire service, there are two ways that are the usual basis for making decisions. The first method is the “Natural” method, which is the Recognition Primed Decision Making model (RPD) and the other method is a “Classical” method or the Classical Decision Making model (Johnson, 2012). The classical method is a model that takes sequential steps before a resulting decision is made. The classical method steps are followed by identifying the problem, analyzing the problem, generating possible solutions, analyzing pros and cons of possible solutions, identifying the best possible solution, gathering input from all outside sources to the best possible solution, and implementation of the solution (Johnson, 2012).
Bullying has been a part of schooling for as long as children have been congregating. To some it seems like a natural, though uncomfortable, part of life and school experience, while to others it can mean terrifying experiences which spoiled and characterized otherwise happy years in school. Dan Olweus, a pioneer in bully behavior research documented that 2.7 million children are affected as victims, and that 2.1 children act as bullies (Fried, 1997, as cited in Aluedse, 2006). With bullying cited as the reason for violent, gun-related crime in the past few years, school districts as well as national governments have put anti-bullying policies in place. Bullying is a complicated phenomenon, involving more than one child demanding lunch money from a smaller child. It is a worldwide epidemic hitting schools everywhere. Virtually everyone has seen or experienced bullying. With technological advances, bullying is even hitting the internet. Parents, teachers, students and governments agencies alike are attempting to put a stop to bullying practices.
Throughout the United States, there are a lot of individuals who experience peer pressure. Peer pressure usually happens around the time when children are turning into an adult. Many children struggle to say “No” when many individuals keep encouraging them to try something that could be bad for them. For example, a twelve year-old girl is hanging out with her friends and they are smoking cigarettes, they keep asking her, “come on, if you don’t try it, then you are not cool,” so the twelve year-old girl eventually tried a cigarette.
The following is a decision-making model that I have used to arrive at a decision.
“Confidence is knowing who you are and not changing it a bit, because of someone’s version of your reality is not their reality” (Shannon L. Alder). Throughout teenage years, this is one of the most important life lessons that is learned, because peer pressure can cause you not to be able to find your true identity. For example, during my freshman year of high school; I was picked on by a student, because she was influenced by others. Peer pressure influences teens to trust their friend’s judgement and experiment with drugs and alcohol. Not only affecting themselves; but also the people around them.
Children should be taught refusal techniques so that they are likely to make apt choices and are able to distinguish on what is good for them and what is bad. Saying ‘No’ to outside pressure can help them to increase their self confidence and should help them to set limits for themselves. When children learn to stop and consider the consequences before responding to a request, they become more accomplished in refraining into high end risks. Teenagers need to stand against anything they think is wrong or will be baleful. They need to have faith in their ideals and not get easily intrigued to things such as alcohol and drugs. Further, they can spend time with like minded friends and avoid the company of someone who bullies other
Bullying has become a serious problem in public schools systems. Being a victim of bullying is a daily struggle for some students. The issue continues to grow, but the question is how to stop bullying from occurring. Many ways have been attempted to stop bullying, but some are more effective than others. Having the students get involved seems to have the most positive effect on the bullying issue in public school systems.
(2) Some experts believe the schools’ anti-drug programs are effective. Two popular programs are Drug Abuse Resistance Education (Dare), and the School Program to Educate and Control Drug Abuse (SPECA). The project Dare and SPECA programs use uniformed police officers to inform students in 5th, 6th and 7th grade about the risks of drugs, and how to avoid negative peer pressure (DeJong 109). William DeJong ,who is an analyst for the Education Development Center, has prepared this study for the National Institute of Justice (Bernards 108).
