The underlying issue of wild horses is the overpopulation of a particular species, which is contributing a serious ecological disaster, overgrazing. The degradation of the land has a domino effect, which will lead to more issues. It is important to maintain a balance between the need of the species, and what is healthy or the environment. The issue created controversy, is central to the passing of laws, and creates an opportunity for the government and the community to work together. There are many way to solve the issue of the wild horses and the issue that are created due to their existence. Issues such as a reduction in the number of the horses removed from the range. Increased use of birth control, a partnership with the Humane Society, …show more content…
This model will give managers a way to present ideas for different solutions to the problem of the increasing herd population. This can help managers estimate the best approach to population management, such as euthanasia, spaying or neutering, or free selling for slaughter. Management Recommendations: There are several ways that the wild horse problem can be managed, however, the task becomes a balance of efficiency and the best welfare of the animals. With that in mind, the following five recommendations, may create the necessary balance. Firstly, a reduction in the number of the horses removed from the range. The BLM could fractionally reduce the amount of horses removed, while, concurrently maintaining the current amount, allowing to test the number of horses that safely remain in the range. Secondly, the increased use of birth control. The BLM could partner with the Humane Society, and …show more content…
The first step in using the technique is to diagram the sequence of decisions and chance events that the decision maker faces.” To solve the issue of the wild horses, I would use the above mentioned suggestion, created by using the process of; 1. Decision nodes, which indicate all possible courses of action open to the decision maker 2. Chance nodes, which show the intervening uncertain advances and all their possible outcomes 3. Probabilities for each possible outcome of a chance event 4. Payoffs, which summarize the consequences of each possible combination of choice and chance Conclusion The controversy that surround that surrounds The BLMs oversight of the wild horses has could effectively be reduced with careful consideration and planning. A integral part of solving the issues faced by the wild horses is the identification of concepts that are most appropriate for use by the BLM in managing the wild horses. Any plan(s) used must maintain a balance between what is best for the effected species, and the overall health of the environment, which ultimately has an effect on every
Now, just a couple of years later, the Colorado Division of Wildlife is planning to release over 180 more lynx into the Colorado wilderness within the next five years. However, out of nearly 100 Canadian Lynx that have already been released so far, about half of them have died and none of them have reproduced. With the type of results that the process has received so far, the agencies involved in the reintroduction process should stop reintroducing the lynx into Colorado. Instead, they should try to find a way different way that will get results that save the species. The government agencies that are involved in reintroducing the lynx argue that it should be done in order to save an endangered species. In this argument they bring out three strong points for trying to save the lynx: every animal should have the opportunity to exist, many people feel happy when they see the animals they share the land with and all living things are part of a complex ecosystem ("Wildlife Commission . . ."). However, they aren't sure how to reintroduce the lynx so that they don't all die.
The current situation today, is that horses and donkeys have exceeded the amount to keep an ecological balance; from 26,600 wildlife to 38,300 wildlife. The horse program enacted by the bill passed in 1971, costs the government approximately $49 million a year. It takes the majority of the budget to manage the already captured horses; taking into account the life of the horses, it has been concluded that the total cost would be closer to $1 billion (Dean Bolstad, Roundup of Wild Horses…). A Federal law, allows the Bureau of Land Management to kill “excess horses to maintain what it calls ‘a thriving natural ecological balance’” (Ginger Kathrens). However, due to retaliation of animal right groups, the BLM has not taken any measures to eliminate
The U.S. Department of Interior’s, Bureau of Land Management, (BLM) was appointed to carry out the Act and given the task of managing the herds of wild horses and burros. Consequently, BLM’s management of wild horse herds has been highly criticized by animal rights activists, horse advocates, news media, as well as members of Congress. There have been numerous lawsuits filed against BLM regarding their management practices and their appalling wild horse round-ups. However, unimpeded BLM continues with the controversial issue of wild horse round-ups, resulting in the death and injury of many wild horses and burros. The vast majority of these round...
However, this approach has many challenges for which solutions have been elusive to date. Ideally, methods for contraception of wild horses should be safe and reversible, effective for several years, practical to administer and be of a reasonable cost and whilst having minimal effect on reproductive and/or harem behavior. This ensures the methods that are used to control the reproductive cycle are considered to be humane and ethical.
The use of horses for human consumption dates back to the earliest use of animals for human consumption. Horses are used for food in many counties but are also considered inhumane in other countries. In the United States specifically, horsemeat is not the norm for consumed meat. There seems to be a problem that has arisen. It is suspected that horses being slaughtered at horse slaughtering factories are not the most up to date, pain free for the horse, and human as people suspect them to be like beef kill floors.
There are many factors to the problem as a whole and unfortunately, there is quick answer with how The Jockey Club should handle this decision. I still stand with my decision when I say it is immoral and unfair to the creature that raced his own lungs off for you for him to be inhumanely slaughtered. With every stride down the back stretch, the animal tried to bring you glory with all that he could. You brought him into this world and gave him this life. Yet, you took it away with not even one warning. The problem of overbreeding and horse slaughtering should be addressed and given the recognition that it needs before it becomes any harsher than it already is to these poor
There are solutions though to this problem. Such as spay/neuter programs, more shelters, and euthanization. There are better ways to prevent more animal overpopulation though like contracts that breeders have to sign. We need to put a stop to the issue of animal overpopulation. Would you want animals dying because there aren’t enough homes and you spending your tax dollars for animal killing chemicals?
Rodeo is a sport with long American traditions and loved by many spectators and participants. Past history has shown that rodeo needed to make way for a new era of riders and trainers with a larger emphasis on the welfare of the animals and not be discontinued or banned entirely. Today’s rodeos do not present a danger to the animals because the animals are well-cared for and protected, rodeos have strict rules and the stock are treated as prized animals.
Day to day horses are abused, people start a long downward spiral into horse racing gambling addiction, and less and less people are watching horse racing. But we can stop it all, by one simple step. Shutting down all horse racing. You can get involved by telling more and more people about this, or with “Horse Racing Week” and let’s stop all the horses that are born and have nowhere to go but the slaughterhouse. All the people’s families who are worried sick all the time. Let’s help. We cannot let one more horse die while running a race for the greedy, selfish horse racing industry.
With over nine million types of horses in the United States, the need for quality health care for the horses has never been stronger. It’s certain that more equine veterinarians than ever before will be needed in the years to come to provide the care that owners want for their horses. According to the American Association of equine practitioners (AAEP), nearly half of the equine veterinarians are involved with performance horses(44.8%). The AVMA’S most recent employment survey of 2016 indicated that there were about 3,874 veterinarians in exclusively equine practice, with and additional 4,177 involved in mixed practices.
For centuries, the wild horses have roamed the Colorado Plateau and they should be able to continue living in the park. The horse population of Colorado has dropped ninety-eight percent since the 1800s. This is mainly because the BLM has rounded up many of the herds from the Mesa Verde area. Contrary to many people's beliefs, horses are not a nuisance to the park because they are a native species. The horses are in the park to get the food and water they need to survive in a
Sometimes owners can’t afford to put their horse down when it needs to be. Vet calls are extremely expensive, especially when they have to travel to the countryside. In order to put your house down via barbiturate injection it can costs an upward of $87.50(Holcomb, Stull, and Kass). Due to the fact that this can cost so much some owners are left with no other option and they simply let their horses out. The decline in the ability to care for horses came after the crash of the United States economy in 2008, many people saw a decline in their salary hence the inability to care for their beloved animals(Olson). Horse slaughter gives people who can no longer afford to take care of their horses a second option. It is a quick and painless process, which allows the horse to be used for practical purposes. However people are turned away when they hear the rigorous travel a horse must face when traveling to a slaughterhouse in a foreign country. Horses are shipped much longer distances than other animals in double deck cattle trailers that are low roofed and to cramped for horses(Olson). Due to the horse’s innate fight or flight behavior many of the horses become severely injured or even dead on the voyage. That is why many people have rebounded to the second option of either letting their horse starve to death or letting them

Having said that they are still an issue, that is a high priority. This group includes wild goat, horses, deer and pigs. The goat, pig and deer numbers are controlled by organized shootings and, are headed by the government. This tactic is very effective and cheap for the organizers as well. Part of the ecology of deer is that they travel in herds that are some times as large as 30 individuals, which makes them like a hurricane, destroying the vegetation as they pass through. The deer problem is not at the front of the parks mind at the moment, and does not receive huge amounts of funding. This is why the main way of controlling wild deer numbers is to lock down on keeping the legal deer farms secure. The horses are not seen as big of a deal as the other species either. They are often seen as graceful creatures that can be used for recreation, and not as the destructive force that they are. Similar to the deer there is very little being done. However Parks Victoria does implement wild horse control methods within the Alpine National Park. Currently the broad management approach is to contain and minimize the impact of wild horses. Previously a range of techniques including trapping, shooting and roping were used in Victoria to control wild horse populations. Wild boar are controlled by hunting and baiting, which have both been effective in the past. Unlike the rabbit baits, they are quite large,
