Con Gun Control
Gun control is one of the most debatable topics. Some people have personal reasons for wanting guns or not… not all people should have guns, but not all people should be trusted to drive a car, but they are still given a licence. It's not the guns killing the people it's the people pulling the trigger.
Depending on the gun control it could mean many different things. It could mean taking away all guns or just assault rifles. But the word assault rifles is not clearly defined. We have had gun control laws in the past. We thought that they would help the crime and murder rate decrease, but that was not the case. The crime and murder rate stayed the same, so we took away the laws. 11% of killing is from stabbing in Chicago. It was proven that if we took away guns all together then the 11% would increase rapidly. We need guns for protection more than anything. The police cannot protect us in every situation. Study showed the public did not know the difference between military grade firearms and public firearms. Military weapons are more powerful than public weapons because of what they are used for. If we want to make the public safer we should make sure military weapons are not sold to the public. We would also have to clearly define the word assault rifle so that if it was decided to get rid of assault rifles it would be able to happen without any confusion.("The Great Gun Control Con." Imagine you are woken up to a noise in your home at 2:00 a.m. An intruder has broken into your home and is armed with an illegally obtained handgun. Guns are outlawed where you live, so you have no way to defend yourself. A call to the police might work, but the police are ten minutes away. In this situation, ten minutes could mean life or death for you and your family. What are you going to do? You do not have very many options. Banning guns is a very illogical idea because not all murders involve guns, guns are used for recreation and hunting, and criminals do not obey laws. Gun control laws have been starting to become more prominent in American culture as a result of the increase in the number of mass shootings around the country. These laws do not necessarily decrease the murder rate, and in some cases, banning guns has resulted in the murder rate increasing, which defeats the whole purpose of the gun ban.
Enforcing an assault weapons ban can reduce the all-too-familiar occurrences of mass shooting and massacres. When Adam Lanza shot 26 people in Sandy Hook Elementary School..police say he largely relied upon a Bushmaster AR-15 "assault-type weapon," a semiautomatic rifle that could rapidly fire multiple high-velocity rounds. This essay will discuss the pros and cons of gun control. Some U.S. States have already adopted some of these gun control laws. I will be talking about the 2nd amendment, public safety, home safety, and do gun control laws really control guns. In conclusion, enabling stricter gun control laws will help to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, criminals, and children and teens. With these laws put into place there will be more assurance of the safety of American citizens. It is not necessary to strip citizens of their right to own a gun, but we should be able to make it harder to get guns. If you are someone with a clear record and using a gun for recreation use, you will have no trouble obtaining a gun. In the long run increase the laws on gun control hurts nobody. Despite historic events where governments seized firearms and killed millions of citizens, today we have a different problem, which is making sure guns are in the right hands.
There are many views about gun control especially when referring to assault weapons. People are both for it and against it. When first hearing “Assault Weapon Man”, many different images filter through one’s mind on what an assault weapon looks like and how to differentiate between an assault weapon and a regular handgun. There is still no consistent definition for an assault weapon. The only definitions that are out there are the ones found in laws, which are used to classify an assault weapon. Even those definitions are not consistent because they are changed and improved when new laws are proposed. Assault weapons are a class of semi-automatic firearms that are designed to kill humans quickly and efficiently. According to the 1994 Crime Control Act an assault weapon is defined as any “semi-automatic rifle that can accept a detachable magazine and has two or more of the following: a folding or telescoping stock, a pistol grip, a bayonet mount, a flash suppressor or threads to attach, or a grenade launcher (Assault Weapons, 2010). Assault weapon bans infuriate many because they feel as if the ban is unconstitutional and going against the 2nd amendment while others believe that the banning of such assault weapons will decrease the number of deaths occurring by an assault weapon.
Educating and making people more knowledge about firearms is no easy task. When most people see an "assault" style of rifle, they assume that it is a killing machine, not a tool. There is a stigma sounding weapons like that and people who own them. Someone opposed to assault rifles may ask, why if you are not in the military do you need one of those kinds of guns? The answer is simple. It is a right guaranteed in our constitution. Just because someone owns one of these weapons, does not mean that they are going to go out and commit mass murder. Gun control advocates also often point out the amount of lethal accidental shootings and suicides that occurs in the United States. Those against guns might simply say that removing guns entirely would substantially lower crime rates.They are upset that criminals can illegally obtain firearms just as easily as law abiding citizens can obtain legal firearms. Having absolutely no gun control would most likely result in more violent crime and shootings. With no gun control, this means that anybody can legally obtain a firearm. Currently, all states employ a system of background checks that every individual must mass before they are permitted to purchase a firearm. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 was an amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
Groups for stricter gun control,such as Handgun Control Inc. (HCI), argue that guns do kill people. They think that it is the gun that makes people feel they are in the right and have the power to take someone 's life and control a situation (Kriegel 818). In reality, one cannot place the blame on the gun. Guns aren 't animate objects that can pick their victims. Guns require people to pull the trigger. For this reason it is my belief that the emphasis of gun control should be placed on teaching gun safety and keeping the criminals from getting their hands on firearms.
Gun control can be defined as “the use of law to limit people's access to handguns, shotguns, rifles, and other firearms” ("Gun Control"). In other words, the government initiates a set of new regulations that gives the government the right to strip and monitor the firearms owned by the gun owners. The new demand for legislators to acknowledge and reform the gun laws present today because statistics show how guns has contribution to killings in America and the horrific tragedies. Every year in the U.S., an average of 100,000 people are shot, according to GunPolicy. Out of that 100,000 people shot, some of those victims consist of children, bystanders, fathers and mothers. The lethality of guns in 2011 firearms was responsible for 32,163 deaths in America (Alpers). Firearms have been used recklessly and claimed thousands of lives of Americans, increasing the death rate. If gun control was in effect and passed by legislators the deaths in America from firearms would not be so large. What also contributes to these facts is the ability to obtain guns for violent acts of crime which why the government need to suppressed and monitored firearms.
Gun control does not only take guns away from criminals, gun control also limits law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves and their families when necessary. Those who argue for gun control usually state guns are a part of most violent crimes. However, this is not always true. While it is true that limiting gun ownership with laws could prevent individuals from possessing guns, it does not prevent people from illegally having or using guns. Those who carry guns legally are not the problem.
Over the past year, the United States has been plagued with controversy in regards to gun control legislation. On January 24, 2013, Senator Feinstein introduced the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013. The Assault Weapons Ban was a bill written to stop the acts of sale, transfer, importation, and manufacturing of military styled weapons. The NRA-ILA website quotes an excerpt of Feinstein’s bill, which states, “Feinstein’s new bill are as follows: Reduces, from two to one, the number of permitted external features on various firearms. The 1994 ban permitted various firearms to be manufactured only if they were assembled with no more than one feature listed in the law. Feinstein’s new bill would prohibit the manufacture of the same firearms with even one of the features.” (NRA-ILA) Wayne Lapierre, Executive Vice President of the NRA, said in 2009, “There’s not a dime’s worth of difference between the guns you want to ban and you don’t want to ban. You’re going to ban these semi-autos, and then it’s going to be handguns, and then it’s going to be pump shotguns.” Lapierre’s statement supports the fact that the recent gun ban legislation across the United States will not solve the problem of increased violence.
Gun control is an awfully big issue in the United States today. Many people in America don’t agree with the gun control laws that they have today. Gun control laws only take guns and freedom away from law-abiding citizens. Many citizens have their own reasons for owning a gun. Why would the government want to make it harder for people to own a gun? People that own guns aren’t very likely to be attacked by criminals. Owning a handgun is one of the best ways of protection when used correctly. The second amendment states “the right to bear arms”; does this grant everyone the right to own a gun? Gun control laws have not been proven to do anything for citizens. Gun control laws just make it harder for the good guy average Joe to own a gun. Gun control laws are not a good idea, and are taking part in the loss of our freedom that was given to us.

Background checks, bans on assault weapons, and bans on weapons in public places should be put in play, in America. The community doesn’t feel safe, so the United States needs to background check people, ban assault weapons, and ban weapons in public places.
Gun control is a very hot topic in politics today. Some people think gun control is necessary to protect the people but nothing could be further from the truth. Gun control needs to be more relaxed if we are to prevent crime from happening at all. If more people are enabled to legally carry guns than more crimes will to stopped before they even happen, creating a better and safer society. No matter how much gun control legislation is passed criminals will still find a way to get ahold of weapons so it is necessary to ensure the American people are armed to fight such people. The truth is that we live in a world which needs guns to protect people. That is why police officers carry weapons and that is why civilians should carry guns themselves.
