U.S. News leads millions of students the wrong way in their educational pursuits each year because of their inaccurate and unreliable college rankings. People in the United States today depend on college rankings too much when choosing their future. U.S. News argues that their college rankings are the most reliable and correct and this is not accurate. U.S. News cannot quantitate or evaluate all of the qualities that make colleges good or bad. This way of ranking the best colleges is not fair. The data that U.S. News provides makes a huge assumption on quality of education. The U.S. News college rankings can not accurately represent students overall college experience and what they got out of that experience. Also, the college rankings are …show more content…
News college rankings can not accurately represent students college experience and what they got out of that experience. Every student goes to college to earn a degree in their chosen field, but every student goes to college for a variety of reasons and fields. In addition to earning a degree, all students have a different goal for their college experience. Some students are most concerned with being on a beautiful campus with nice amenities. Some students are looking for cultural diversity. Some students are looking for a school with an active social scene. All of these different needs and experiences cannot be quantified in the U.S. News college rankings. According to the Liberal Arts Colleges article 14 Reasons Why US News College Rankings are Meaningless, “ The monster list of schools leaves out what we think to be an important measure: how the students feel about the school” (Liberal Arts Colleges). Liberal Arts Colleges are saying that U.S. News can not quantify the student's feelings and help make the college rankings more accurate. The student’s feelings about a college are very important and can tells a lot about college. The feelings and opinions about a student who has gone to that college are the most telling about how good a college is compared to others, and when it is difficult to include that in the data that changes the ranking a …show more content…
Many students don’t take the time to look into the colleges they are considering. Those students base the value and quality of colleges on the U.S. News rankings. The U.S News rankings are what helps them decide on their future education and is the deciding factor for them. Robert Morse and Eric Brooks argue, “U.S. News Best Colleges rankings, published online on Sept. 12, 2017, are based on up to 15 key measures of quality” ( Morse and Brooks). Morse and Eric are saying that college rankings are based on 15 accurate measure of quality. College rankings are supposedly based on acceptance rate, average alumni giving rate, average first-year student retention rate, average graduation rate, class size, expenditures per student, faculty compensation, faculty with a doctoral or terminal degree, graduation rate performance, high school class standing, high school counselor rating score, peer assessment, proportion of full-time faculty, SAT/ACT scores, and the student-faculty ratio ( Morse and Brooks). To some, the U.S. News college rankings can be a valuable tool in narrowing down what the best colleges
I know based on coursework that all can be assessed (measured) to determine whether or not they are being obtained through the use of questionnaires, surveys, statistical data complied through different departmental resources across the campus, analyzed by the Office of Data Analytics and Institutional Research. Additional methods of assessment can come from outside organizations such as the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB); and other state and federal governmental agencies. Unfortunately, each of the goals can be problematic for the institution and do have the possibility of failure. Failure of achieving one’s objectives can cost an institution its perceived honor and prestige, could cause lower enrollment and most importantly loss of financial resources. As a graduate student, I researched several institutions that had prestigious higher education programs, teaching faculty, and research opportunities before making my final decision on where to
On the other hand, I believe that parents and the students are the one that will create the new standards for colleges to be chosen. Why do I think this way and disagree with Kevin Carey? I disagree with him because business, whether for profit or non-profit, will not change a marketing strategy if they see it is working. Colleges will only change if they see that consumers are changing. Yes, colleges will try to distract consumers with amenities. But, if consumers look for the information they need colleges will give it to them. The reason this works is because students will go to a college that will supply them with their demands, the law of supply and

Tuition helps to pay for all of the services and programs of a University. However, some universities put more money into one or two programs or colleges to make them stronger areas of study within the university. Not all colleges or departments throughout a university have the same quality of classes or facilities. For example, Iowa State University invests a great deal of their money in the engineering and agricultural programs and so increases the quality of those programs. This is how students choose which university is best for them. A student bases his decision on what college to attend by looking at what programs a particular universit...
However, for those who do, they have expectations for what they believe they should be gaining from their educational journey, and what their institution believes they are preparing them for. For Example, I attend Florida Atlantic University, and the reason behind my choosing of this fine institution, is because when researching about the school, I found that it had the resources and the classes to help me pursue my career in medicine. This is beneficial to me, because FAU has programs such as, the pre-health where I was provided with a flight plan which ensures that I know what classes to take and when to take them. Also, the program has an internship towards the end of the program, therefore, the building of relationships and networking with different people with important position, will at some point provide me with guidance and insight regarding my future goals. Programs like FAU’s Pre-health, can really aid one with his or her success by opening doors such as, internship and job opportunities for a student who now further expand their role in his or her field; present their new founded job with the skills inherited throughout school, and finding a way to truly have an impact in their community, state, country and/or
The biggests explain I can think of is University Of michigan. They are famous for their football team. But do you know what else they are famous for? There science department. University Of Michigan get peoples attention only for football of science department what about other major? The major that could matter but don't get enough attention. This world of education is turning to only science majors and math or the football team. There classes like writing, speech, art and etc is turning into basic classes that supports science and math. The high the test score in these subject the better the rating for universities. What about the success rate of students? No college wants to rate themselves by the number of murders, suicides, failures, or dropouts. They all hide the negative side to attract the students to come to their college. Colleges are turning education into a business. They do this by adding classes that are not a part of their major, increasing the prices of books, and high tuitions that cause students to pile up with student
First there are eight computers that are used in the BCS computer system today to determine this part of the ranking system. Out of the eight computers only the seven highest rankings are used for one team, then the seven rankings (worst ranking dropped) are averaged out respectively. All of these computer rankings are determined through eight newspapers and sports specialists. These computer rankings are how these eight sources rank the top twenty-fi...
When it comes to the individual choice on college education. Each student is motivated by a different branch of knowledge. Some have the goals of becoming lawyers, doctors, bankers, others choose to learn more about the liberal arts and its influence in building their personal characteristics with the world around them. This is precisely why institutions offer a large variety of programs to attract many high school seniors when it comes to deciding which institute to attend.
Brooks made is clear that going to college to get an education is one thing but going to college for the experience is another. Brooks tells his audience that they should live. Expressing that this opportunity is only for a short moment before everyday will consist of working. He goes into depth about colleges and universities offer to their students and future to lure them in. Brooks states, “Universities are more professional and glittering than ever but in some ways there are emptiness deep down” (Page 1) Meaning that a student does not pick a college solely on the academics opportunities. Still that is a major reason for picking a college but it is not the only appealing thing about a
Keep their reputation of a safe place and community: It is known that if the parents are happy with the universities the students are, a part of the decision relies on the parents approval. If there are a large amount of sexual assaults and crime rates the parent is more than likely to try to rule out that specific University or college therefor keeping low numbers become

There are a lot of dependent variables that play a major role in this study. These dependent variables are GPA, graduations rates, feelings overall about the school, faculty student involvement, campus involvement, and high school experiences.
Flexibility is important to some students because it gives the student the opportunity to work while obtaining their degree. Accreditation is important to highlight the excellence of the university and reassurance of the university commitment to the students. The graduation rate of a college is important because it shows the school dedication to helping their student entering and completing their degree. Faculty-student ratio is important because it allows the staff to get to know the student on a more personal
