The high school years of a students life has its pros and its cons. It can often times be stressful and overwhelming, but high school should be some of the most fun filled and memorable years of a teens life. There are clubs to join, sports to participate in, prom to attend, and many more fun activities. High school, however, does have a major con, which is bullying. Bullying can be acts of violence such as fighting, or it can verbal such as name-calling, spreading rumors about someone, and a number of many more harmful actions or words towards a person. Whether it is cyberbullying, physical bullying, or verbal bullying; it is not acceptable at all to say the least bit. Since bullying continues to grow as a major issue in schools, administrators need to start enforcing stricter rules and work to create an environment where every student will feel safe
Students should want to come to school to receive their education and see all of their friends. If students are getting bullied and they do not feel safe, then they are not going to attend school regularly. If students know that their school environment is safe and that there are people that they can trust to talk to, then they will want to come to school because they will feel safe. When teachers and administrators are working to create a safe environment, they need to be positive. They need to have a positive attitude and a positive outlook on bullying in their school. When students see their teachers being positive, they will also be positive. Also, to create the positive environment, the school must put to use their disciplinary system for students that bully. Students are told not to bully, not to say mean words, and not to hurt others. It only focuses on the negative side of the problem. “Empathy clearly plays a tremendous role in an effective anti-bullying program” (Jones and Augustine, 2015). Kids aren’t being taught compassion, tolerance, and empathy thought these programs. The only thing that these students are being taught is what a bully is and everything they should not do. Clearly, tolerance is not being built amongst students. This is a trait that students learn as small children. It is hard to change the viewpoint of a child once their viewpoint has been taught, whether it be good or bad, they develope those thoughts about certain topics. Once tolerance and acceptance is established and taught bullying and harassment in secondary schools will significantly drop.
As shown as a real issue within high school through television’s Freaks and Geeks, bullying is something that needs to be understood and dealt with. In an age with more resources for bullies to use, the consequences are too severe not to do anything about it. Bullying is now stretching beyond the school hallways and has invaded students in their own homes. There needs to be more awareness on what the actual effects of bullying are and that bullied victims are not alone.

By monitoring where bullying occurs and making sure that they are safe for a student can be extremely helpful. Lawner and Terzian identify that bullying happens where adults aren 't watching and call these places “hotspots”. They say “Research suggests that much bullying behavior occurs in “hotspots”— areas with low levels of adult supervision, such as a playground, bus, or cafeteria.” This only proves that bullying happens everyday usually at the same area, yet no one is there to see or help. Adding supervision by placing adults in areas like this would decrease the issue in that children are being watched causing the victim to feel safe and the bully intimidated. Since bullying is being turned to online, administrators should have the right with permission from the victim to see what the bully is posting on there page. Bullies usually have more than one victim and administrators being able to access the bullies internet pages so that they could identify more easily who they are attacking. In addition, some schools have speakers come in and tell their story about what happened to them and how it has affected their lives. Some students may relate to a story and in turn can have a huge impact on their emotions as well as their behavior. In the end school bullying has been around for centuries and will continue for many more years, but prevention and awareness are key to reducing the problem with school bullying.

In recent times bullying has become a national issue, notwithstanding the fact that it has been in existence for many years. Traditionally, bullying has been seen as horseplay, but with the increase of harassment in schools and suicides; parents and schools are now forced to take action to prevent bullying in schools. Bullying is an unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance which has the potential to be repeated over time. Strategies to prevent bullying in schools are grouped into identifying the causes of bullying, creating policies and rules, building a safe environment and educating students and staff.
Bullying is a repeated harmful act that continues to affect millions of students every year. There is no stereotypical person that is a target for bullying; anyone can be its victim. There may not always be any signs of physical harm during these attacks, but our children always suffer emotional harm. Educating students, teachers and parents seems to be the only valid solution to this problem. There are many organizations that can educate the schools on this subject but for it to work people must care. Maybe one day, when enough people realize that this problem will not go away with out their help, we can eliminate bullying from our schools. Bullying is something that is not something new and is actually something that society continues to face. Over the years, bullying has been looked at as being so ordinary in schools that it is continuously overlooked as an emanate threat to students and has been lowered to a belief that bullying is a part of the developmental stage that most young children will experience then overcome (Allebeck, 2005, p. 129). Bullying has become a serious problem in public schools systems. Being a victim of bullying is a daily struggle for some students. The issue continues to grow, but the question is how to stop bullying from occurring. Many ways have been attempted to stop bullying, but some are more effective than others.
