Propaganda was a well known term during World War Two. Propaganda was used to inform the readers of reasons or opinions. Propaganda was a “major industry” during the period of World War Two, using various colorful posters, lengthy movies, and flyers to “massively effort to educate and convince the public” (Mahaney 41). One example of this was a well known character called “Uncle Sam”. “Uncle Sam” was a character created when the U.S. Army was looking for young men to recruit for the war. The poster consisted of an older man wearing american themed clothes, and pointing outwards, creating the effect that he was pointing towards the reader. On the bottom, it had a simple catchphrase- “I want you for the U.S. Army.” The bright colors attracted
many bystanders and convinced men to join the war because they believed that they were doing good by joining the war to support their country. Propaganda was also used not only in the U.S. For example, propaganda had traveled to the other side of the world, including Germany. During World War Two, a dictator named, Adolf Hitler used propaganda to turn the Germans against a well know religion, this religion was Jewish. Hitler had believed that the Jews were the common enemy, that they were fighting a war against the Jewish, rather than the U.S. . Hitler’s propaganda used red and white posters with a symbol in the middle, and on the bottom had a hateful phrase towards the Jewish, or giving reasons on why the Jews were so “evil”. He also traveled all around Germany giving speeches on how they must defeat the common enemy, and creating a legacy. Even after the war was finished, the term propaganda never died. It had served it’s purpose by gathering support and earning many followers.
In 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the United States government applied several forms of propaganda in order to receive support from the American citizens. Film, radio and government posters contained forms of propaganda that appealed to the emotions of American citizens. Quotes from President Franklin Roosevelt “Hostilities exist. Wars are generally fought between soldiers, but the different ideologies often meet on the battlefield as well. The support of the people is crucial during these times since general knowledge of strength relies on numbers. Propaganda targets people’s emotions and feelings and changes people’s perception about a particular idea, people, or situation. Propaganda goes hand in hand with the art of persuasion and convincing; these tools can control and manipulate the collective minds of a massive amount of its audience.

It gives its user the opportunity to move people to action in both positive and negative ways, by either bringing fame or shame to a selected person or idea. Propaganda is used to sell a candidate or a belief to the public, by ruining the opponent’s chances of winning, or by falsely advertising an idea of their own as better than one of their opponents.
During World War II propaganda was ubiquitous. It consisted of a wide range of carriers including leaflets, radio, television, and most importantly posters. Posters were used based on their appeal: they were colorful, creative, concise, and mentally stimulating. Posters often portrayed the artist's views on the war. They demonstrated the artist concern for the war, their hopes for the war, and reflected the way enemies were envisioned. Posters also show a nations political status: they reflect a nations allies and enemies, how the nation saw itself, and its greatest hopes and fears of the war.
I will be analyzing two World War II propaganda posters, Kultur Terror and Liberators. The goal of this propaganda poster from World War II was to instill a mixture of fear and hatred for the United States in the European people. Without getting into the specifics of the art, this large figure is covered in American related stereotypes while destroying a European city. At first glance this appeals to the fear in European people, which is an example of pathos. Europeans, especially Germans during World War II were told that America is an evil country and that they want to erase European culture. Now here is a shocking image of an American beast coming and obliterating everything you know and love. Anyone in their right mind would be scared if this was the information they were being spoon fed by the government. Once the European people saw that America was a scary and evil nation, they felt like World War II was necessary because the Americans had to be stopped. Another propaganda technique used in this poster is known as Big Lie. The phrase was actually coined by Adolf Hitler himself. This technique uses false accusations so enormous so that no one would believe that someone could just make up them up. No one has the audacity to form a lie so large so it all must be true. The Nazi party gained support from their citizens which justified what they were doing, even though in reality what they were doing was inhumane. This shows how the perceived reality has an enormous impact and can occasionally over power the real life truth.
When a person sees a new advertisement or commercial for their favorite shoe company, they immediately want to go and check out their latest designs. Similarly, propaganda uses different sources of media to encourage people to buy a certain item that will benefit their country or an organization. Propaganda was used in World War II to encourage citizens to buy certain tools or participate in certain events to help the soldiers fighting. The Nazis are infamous for their heavy use of propaganda during their reign in the Third Reich, they used many means of propaganda such as posters, cartoons, radio, film, etc. The German citizens’ constant exposure to all of this propaganda from all directions had a deep psychological and psychoanalytical impact on them, it redefined their identity and who they were as well as what they thought of the world around them. Nazi propaganda often had deep symbolic meaning usually associated with anti-semitism and German nationalism, these elements were already present in the minds of the majority of Germans so it wasn’t hard for Adolf Hitler and the rest of the Nazi party to further provoke and enrage the emotions of people concerning these things, they merely had to tap into these pre disposed emotions in a way that would have the most favourable psychological impact for the Nazis. Some of the opinions and mindsets that German citizens had may have been there even before the Nazis came into power and made it seemed like they were brainwashing people with their propaganda, but with what justification can it be said that Nazi propaganda had a psychological and psychoanalytic impact on the German population to a great extent, rather than it being the work of pre set psychological states of mind of people due to the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression, Hyperinflation, and other sources which may have led the German population to support and hold anti-semitistic and nationalistic ideologies.
Wars are good business. They create an immediate demand for a wide variety of materials needed by the government in order to fight the war. They create work opportunities for people that might not ordinarily be considered part of the normal work force. And, while not necessarily good for the soldiers engaged in the fighting, wars are always good for the businesses that provide the materials used in a war.
