Program Outcomes
When developing curriculum at the program level ensure that the outcomes are clear statements of performance and expected achievements from graduates which are reflected in program outcome statements. “Program outcomes are statements that describe what learners will know and be able to do when they graduate from a program” ("Building curriculum at," 2012). Program outcomes should include three basic elements: vocational standards, essential employability skills, and general education requirements and should describe significant and durable learning objectives of what the learner will be able to demonstrate at the end of the program.
When developing the program outcomes ensure they are clearly stated, verifiable, essential, durable, meaningful, and significant, make sure learning is transferable, performance-based, and achievable. Program outcomes should be cultural and gender bias, and be consistent with the mission and philosophy of the university. Aligning program outcomes with affiliations, governing agencies, and accrediting bodies in ensuring they are consistent with the expectations of those professional groups and reflect the credential being awarded upon completion of the program ("Building curriculum at," 2012).
Program outcomes should incorporate the following elements changes in demographics and technology, demonstrate flow from mission and philosophy, describe the quality and characteristics expected of nurses at the end of the program, and reflect expectations of professional organizations and accrediting bodies. Advocating for diverse patients is important. In this paper I will be discuss a personal ethical dilemma in which I have encountered. I will give an objective interpretation of both my side as well as my patient’s side of the dilemma. Then I will describe the conflicting values and beliefs that I and the patient had. Then I will give the information I was lacking concerning the patient’s culture. Lastly, I will define culturally congruent care.
As a nurse, we serve a society which is very culturally diverse. We provide care to many individuals whom have their own unique set of ethics, values, morals, and beliefs by which may be very different from our own. Because of our professional role, we must use lifelong learning as a tool to broaden our views, increase our knowledge, and understand the influences which affect it. To make this possible, we have to continually educate ourselves about the nursing laws, professional standards, and code of ethics all of which we are committed to.

Transcultural nursing requires us to care for our patients by providing culturally sensitive care to a broad spectrum of patients. The purpose of this post is to describe cultural baggage, ethnocentrism, cultural imposition, prejudice, discrimination, and cultural congruence. I will also give an example of each term to help you understand the terminology related to nursing care. I will define cultural self-assessment and explain why it is valuable for nurses to understand what their own self-assessment means. Finally, I will describe the five steps to delivering culturally congruent nursing care and how I have applied these concepts to my nursing practice.
Leininger’s theory of cultural care diversity and universality is about caring, which is the essence of nursing and is recognized in the theory of basic human needs. Her theory incorporates anthropology, which focuses towards caring, culture values, and pattern rather than medical symptoms and treatments. Concepts of Leininger’s theory revolves around caring, which is essential for growth, development and survival. Leininger’s transcultural nursing is our “‘cultural knowledge that is used in our actions to promote positive health behavior among patients and foster culturally sensitive and congruent care’ (Campesino, 2008)” (Posner p.151). Providing client centered care not only enables trust, but also fulfills the patient’s potential health needs and nursing roles with the best outcome. I believe it is important to understand that America has more demands for cultural diversity; therefore, we must be able to meet these demands with the appropriate interventions. Cultural misunderstandings and applying inappropriate interventions become a cultural stress for the nurse-patient relationship; distrust could lead to nurses being unable to collect the necessary information to effectively provide the right care. In conclusion, there are numerous legal and ethical issues apparent in the nursing practice. Nurses should study and be as informed as they can with ethics and legality within their field in order to ensure no mistakes occur. Ethical issues vary based on patient’s views, religion, and environment. Nurses are influenced by these same views, but most of the time they are not the same as the patients. In nursing practice, the NLN’s mission aligns with extending nursing education by fostering excellence to progress a diverse team in evolving health on both national and global levels (NLN, 2016). The NLN seeks to be a leader in nursing education by setting goals and objectives. This organization plays a prominent role in nursing education by spearheading the nursing workforce with nursing certifications and examinations and serving as the main source for legislation reform. The NLN inspires students to apply professional clinical expertise to practice in an ethical manner with the utmost respect and value caring (Bavier, 2015). In nursing research, the NLN endorses evidence-based nursing education by promoting resources to foster research and evolve research initiatives to transform education in nursing (NLN, 2016). As a nurse strive to provide culturally sensitive care, they must recognize how their client's and their perceptions are similiar as well as different. Nurse enhance their ability to provide client-centered care by reflecting on how their beliefs and values impact the nurse-patient relationship. To provide appropriate patient care, the nurse must understand her/his culture and that of the nurse profession. Cultural biases can be particularly difficult to identify when the nurse and client are of a similar cultural backgroup. When we recognize and know a culture, we will know what is right for our patient, and thus may impose our own values on the client by assuming our values are their values. Recognizing differences a present an opportunity not only to know the other, but also to help gain a greater sense of self. The need to evaluate curriculum arises because it is necessary for both teachers and students to determine the extent to which their current curricular program and its implementation have produced positive and curricularly suitable outcomes for students. To evaluate curricular effectiveness we must identify and describe the curriculum and its objectives first and then check its contents for accuracy, comprehensiveness, depth, timeliness, depth and quality.
Goals and objectives must be clearly communicated via written instructions or a rubric that outlines grading criteria.
Through the completion of my graduate program in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, I have gained an immense amount of knowledge and a plethora of skills which I have used and found valuable in my seventh grade English classroom. My outlook on student learning and my empathy towards students has also been positively affected by the program. These learning opportunities have led me to become a better educator both inside and outside of the classroom.
Consequently, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), an avid advocate for the evidence-based recommendations for change and advancement of health care and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in recognizing these challenges in 2008, partnered to establish a two-year Initiative on the Future of Nursing.
