Professionalism versus commercialism serves a dilemma in this case. Commercialism is winning the war here ousting professionalism from Rick Pitino. Instead of considering the interest of others, he has been caught in an egoistic behavior in the interest of himself. The pressures of gaining top recruits for the basketball program may outweigh his ethical decision making. Rick Pitino and many other college head coaches get paid handsomely for their skills and leadership as a coach. As more schools improve their basketball programs the competition to gain recruits becomes difficult. Coaches are always expected to win, therefore getting the best players at any cost to try and win becomes a wanted priority.

Although he has been officially dismissed as head coach from the University of Louisville with just cause. Pitino denies any knowledge and his involvement in a money laundering scheme to players specifically Brian Bowen. Pitino has spoken to the public in numerous occasions pleading his innocence. Pitino had a one-on-one interview with ESPN’s College Basketball analyst Jay Bilas. During the interview Bilas went straight ahead and asked Pitino if he had any knowledge on the allegations regarding payment to Bowen. Pitino cited that he took a lie detector test during an investigation interview with the FBI and passed confirming his innocence that he knew no sort of any payment to a recruit. Claiming god only knows the truth regarding Bilas follow up question of “How did you not know”? Pitino responded, “Should I've known somebody walked into a hotel room, how can I possibly have known”, referring to the secret taping of him having conversations of funneling money associated with Jim Gatto, and Christian Dawkins. The NCAA has core values for preparing its young student athletes either during their time in school, the real world and protecting their interest while they are in college. The NCAA has a long list of rules and protocols pertaining to student athletes and one of those long lists is recruiting players. Abundance of athletes from high school, in hopes of taking their skills to another level, enter the collegiate level for competition as the biggest gateway into the professional circuit: the NBA or NFL. The very skilled athletes especially in sports like basketball and football gain much attention from paid recruiters from abundance of different universities and colleges in hopes they commit to going to said school. In attempt to keep recruiting fair, the NCAA has placed rules and guidelines on how to recruit players.
