The first thoughts that come to mind when thinking of a professional nurse are good communication skills, problem solving skills, flexibility, empathy, and respect. As a nursing student we are learning the basis of all of these skills inside and outside of the lab. It is also important as a nurse to be a critical thinker. Even now as students we are being pushed and challenged to think in ways we never had to before. Communication skills are the basis to having a good relationship with your client. You want to be sure to use therapeutic techniques, nonverbal, and verbal communication. They need to be open minded and be proactive about everything that they do. Everything is not as it seems, things change quickly and you are going to need help. You have to keep an open mind to other people's ideas because they might have picked something up from the information that you did not. You are never working alone it is a team effort so you need to be open to physicians as well. “The challenge, then, is to make the most of all interactions in order to utilize the best knowledge and abilities of all health team members and produce positive patient outcomes” (Lindeke, L., Sieckert, A., 2005). You always have to have an open mind about your patients as well, you do not always know their full background and cannot judge them. I always try to keep an open mind because you never know what someone has been through and what pains they are feeling. I keep my mind open to new ideas and help from others. Nurses always have to support and rationalize their decisions. There has to be a reason for everything they do, there has to be purpose or things could go seriously wrong. I do support my decisions, but I could better improve this. I need to start to think even deeper into situations. I also, reflecting on every possible outcome of a situation before coming to a final conclusion. You have to look at all aspects, ask for opinions if you are not sure, and make sure that the choice you make is for the best outcome.
