This week reading about the nuts and bolts of helping has been pretty interesting. Especially learning the difference between a helping friendship and a professional helping. Both still help others just in different ways. I first thought how is there a difference but after that part, it all become clear to me why both are different. It is best to keep helping friendship and professional helping separate.
A helping friendship means that I will be able to provide friends with a listening ear, a caring attitude, and emotional support, enhancing your relationships and aiding those I care about. Reflecting on what it really means to have a helping friendship is not necessarily me being my friend’s counselor. It’s about me giving them advisor from time to time and being there for one another. The professional helping is a different type of relationship from the helping friendship. When it comes to helping professional it is all about my clients, and what can I do to establish trust between me and my clients. Thinking about helping on a professional level there has to be set boundaries; I can’t be friends with my clients because that might do more harm than good. In a professional helping my clients and I will set goals for them that I wouldn’t do with my friends.
Some similarities between helping friendship and professional helping are having an open ear to listen. I also think having a caring attitude can be a similarity. Reflecting back to the difference with the professional helping my job is to maintain a professional relationship and not a friendship. With helping friendship I don’t have a contract with them and I don’t get paid giving my friends advisor, because they are not my clients.
