7.1 Professional Ethics Dilemma Surya is an 18-year-old Indian American who struggles with issues of gender identity, sexuality, self-harm, self-acceptance, depression, and anxiety. Surya lives with her parents and older sister Akila in Madison, WI. Akila is still in elementary school and is very girly and feminine presenting. This is in stark contrast to Surya. Surya now attends Madison East high school after transferring from Madison West when her family moved across town. Surya is on the softball, basketball and soccer teams, along with the president of student council. Surya's father Raj is an engineer who is rarely ever home due to his high position at work. When present at home, he is usually very distant, lacks showing emotion and has …show more content…
j., this offense could also fall under multiple other categories of sexual harassment and sexual misconduct. This was a huge breach of the ASCA (2016) ethical standards because appropriate boundaries were not held when the counselor engaged in a sexual relationship with a student. Responding to this ethical dilemma it is somewhat difficult because it occurred with another counselor at another school. According to the ASCA (2016) ethical standards, section E., maintenance of standards, when something occurs that a school counselor considers unethical (usually by one of their own colleagues), they should discuss the situation with appropriate colleagues and see if the other professionals view the situation as unethical. If they deem it unethical, they are then required to report the case to their district and state. Consequently, they need to speak with the actual person who committed the offense, but if the behavior was unlawful and dangerous to Surya, proper school or community authorities should be contacted instead. The resulting step if the situation is not resolved is to refer the case for examination in a specifically designed sequence according to ASCA (2016) ethical standards. The sequence is: first, the state school counselor association followed by the American School Counselor Association. Within this case you as a school counselor would follow these steps and ensure proper action was taken to ensure Surya was safe and taken care of and …show more content…
Additionally, the ethical standard A.11.a. and d these standards state, the administration and suitable authorities should be notified of any incidents of bullying, dating violence, and sexual harassment, since the vast majority of these offenses fall under breaches of Title IX or other laws that require interventions conducted by an administrator, and the student's well-being was threatened (p.
The sexual harassment and abuse from Hill included inappropriate touching, explicit conversation, forced kissing, and forceful intercourse on school grounds.
The ASCA reminds school counselors that they are to guide and assist students who are victims by supplying appropriate services (ASCA, 2016). When abuse is suspected, a guidance counselor must personally report the abuse to child protective services (CPS). Cuff vs. Grossmont Union High School District reminds us how vital it is to follow all reporting procedures. In the state of Virginia, teachers, and those working in public and private schools, are mandated reporters and must report within 24 hours of the suspected neglect or abuse; even if the abuse occurred in the past (DSS.VA.GOV). Failure to report will result in criminal actions. Although school counselors are held to confidentiality terms, cases such as these warrant a duty to warn and an ethical obligation to protect. The American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) state that as Christian counselors, one should always disclose confidential information when a life is endangered, this includes events such as suicidal ideations, bullying, and abuse (AACC, 2014). Although the ASCA and the AACC provides guidance to crisis responses, there are still legal and ethical issues that may not be
Keep information confidential unless legal requirements demand that confidential information be revealed.” (Ethical Standards for School Counselors) In this case there are no legal requirements that demanded the counselor to discuss the student information with the school teacher. Since the counselor works in the same community she lives in, she has to be aware of dual relationships. “School counselors have an ethical imperative to maintain a professional distance from students and parents. (Carolyn Stone, 2013)” Since the counselor worked in the community where it is probably hard for her to avoid duel relationships she should be extra careful to avoid ethical and legal issues. According to ASCA A.4.d, “Avoid dual relationship with school personal that might infringe on the integrity of the school counselor/student relationship. (Ethical Standards for School Counselors)” The counselor should have taken the appropriate steps and informed the teacher she was not at liberty to discuss student confidential information. The professional school counselor should, “Promote awareness and adherence to appropriate guidelines regarding confidentiality, the distinction between public and private information and staff consultation.” ASCA C.2 ( (Ethical Standards for School Counselors). The teacher and school counselor acted unprofessional and did not follow guidelines to the student confidentiality and they both violated policy by discussing student information in public setting. School related business should not be addressed in public
Abortion has been a political, social, and personal topic for many years now. The woman’s right to choose has become a law that is still debated, argued and fought over, even though it has been passed. This paper will examine a specific example where abortion is encouraged, identify the Christian world views beliefs and resolution as well as the consequences of such, and compare them with another option.
The outcomes of these relationships are varied; some end happy, some end with hurt and shame, not only for the student, but the professor and other stakeholders. Until recently, these relationships were swept under the rug, with administrators looking the other way or the professor resigning in shame only to move on to another university to behave in the same manner. Since 1972, State universities that employ more than 15 employees are no longer exempt now subject to Title VII Civil Rights act of 1964 when hiring and are subject to cases of sexual harassment as well. In this case, a Title IX complaint would ensue. Title IX has been very controversial within academia. Under this act, complaints must be “investigate[d] … promptly through a campus-based process” (Pope, 2014), which are meticulous official processes. The process for investigating the complaints has been scrutinized by “civil liberties groups and the American Association of University Professors” (Pope, 2014) who many professors are members. Stronger ethic training for cases described above may curtail some of these complaints. The faculty and senate committee may not see this as a subject that needs to be covered in the ethics training. Many members of this community feel as if their colleagues would not behave in this manner, therefore, it does not need to be addressed. However, it is obvious that these relationships continue to occur and the two people who are involved are not the only ones who are affected. The university’s, department’s, program’s, student’s and professor’s reputations suffer, valuable time and resources are spent and the outcome typically is a tragic one. Policies prohibiting these relationships need to be enforced. The challenge will be to break the “blue” academic
The critical incident that I will be explaining about is regarding an eight-year-old girl currently a student at Victory Independent School District (VISD). This student wrote on her class journal that her uncle was touching her in her private parts when no one was watching. The teacher was so confused to what to do when he read Bianca’s journal, especially because he was wondering if it was appropriate for him to ask her questions about it. The teacher was concern that due to being a male that the student was going to feel uncomfortable if he were to ask her about what she had wrote in her journal. The teacher did know what to do and he was so confused because he was reading and grading the journals at home during the weekend. He continued reading Bianca’s journal and feeling more worried about his student's well being at home.
This problem is both an ethical and professional issue, as Mr. Pearson's actions breach the trust and integrity expected in the counselor-client relationship. This is an ethical issue from the counselor, Mr. Pearson, who hires a client to work for him and continues seeing her for sessions, inappropriately touches her, encourages dancing in front of him and wearing provocative clothing, recommends drinking, and seeks an intimate relationship with her. Step 2: Apply the ACA Code of Ethics and Florida statutes: ACA Code of Ethics A.5.a Sexual and/or Romantic Relationships Prohibited: “Sexual and/or romantic counselor-client interactions or relationships with current clients, their romantic partners, or their family members are prohibited. This prohibition applies to both in person and electronic interactions or relationships (ACA, 2014).” Mr. Pearson's behavior of holding Emily's hand, giving long hugs, and kissing her constitutes sexual harassment, violating this code.
The major areas of my values and ethics can be summarized in six words: excellence, personal integrity, responsibility, ambition, accountability, and determination. Excellence guides me when setting targets in all my undertakings; I normally strive to achieve my best. Personal integrity and accountability enable me to make sound judgments to avoid engaging in actions that will hurt me and/or other people around me. Responsibility is important to me as it enables me to identify the part I need to play in my family, at the workplace, and in the community. Lastly, ambition and determination are applicable in providing me with the momentum needed to ensure that all my initiatives and tasks are done to completion.
In the profession of Dental Hygiene, ethical dilemmas are nearly impossible to avoid, and most hygienists at some point in their professional life will have to face and answer ethical questions. Some ethical conflicts the dental hygienist may encounter can be quite complex and an obvious answer may not be readily available. In the article Ethical Decision Making, Phyllis Beemsterboer suggests an ethical decision-making model can aide the dental hygienist in making appropriate decisions when confronted with an ethical situation, and that the six-step model can serve dental hygienists in making the most advantageous ethical decision (2010).
The CEC professional ethical principles are a guideline for professional special educators. Special educators have a special purpose endowed by the community and recognized by a professional credential. As such, special educators have a responsibility to be guided by their Ethical Principles and Professional Practice Standards (cec). The bottom line is this; professional special educators pledge to these principles and practice guidelines that define their professionalism and advance not only their success but the student’s and their families’ success as well. In regards to my own professional philosophy and goals, I find the following principles most meaningful.
I have chosen the business profession topic of higher education administration. I am extremely familiar with this profession; as it is the job that I currently hold. There is a plethora of different activities and task that are dealt with on a daily basis within this profession. Some of these items consist of assisting both full and part time staff and faculty, maintaining order within budgets and finance, including all purchase orders and check requests, facilitating student awards, including scholarships, staffing and training within the department, as well as dealing with public policy and laws within the college. It is immensely obvious that this job would keep anyone busy. This alone is one of the reasons I love this profession so much. Each day brings something new, and important group of items to accomplish. Anyone who holds this job, would go into work everyday knowing that the tasks that they are about to perform, will create a difference to not only to the departments and its students, but will also make a difference within the entire college. This person alone has the responsibility of making ethical decisions every single day as well as watching out for others who may need help being pointed in the proper ethical direction based on their knowledge of the school’s ethics plans that have been put in place. If someone were unaware of the ethical standards in this profession, there is a lot of room for things to head in a corrupt direction rather quickly.
Organizational Ethics Issue Resolution Paper Introduction For this paper, Washington Mutual has been selected to show how the ethical decision making process can be achieved. When it comes to business ethics in the workplace, Washington Mutual has designed what can be considered a well balanced workplace with behaviors that are aligned with their moral values and business ethics. Business ethics are sometimes depicted as resolving conflicts where one option appears to be the correct choice. There are many different ethical dilemmas that are faced by managers and leaders everyday that are highly complex and have no clear choice or guidelines to assist in making the choices for resolution. There are times when an employee has to decide whether or not to cheat, lie, steal, or break their contract.
In this assignment we will be identifying an ethical dilemma an individual has experienced. We will begin with a short introduction of what an ethical dilemma is, moving on to providing brief details of the dilemma an individual has experienced. We will then go on to selecting one ethical theory, to show how it can help an individual understand and deal with the situation when placed within, followed by a conclusion.
Everyone in this world has experienced an ethical dilemma in different situations and this may arise between one or more individuals. Ethical dilemma is a situation where people have to make complex decisions and are influenced based on personal interest, social environment or norms, and religious beliefs (“Strategic Leadership”, n.d.). The leaders and managers in the company should set guidelines to ensure employees are aware and have a better chance to solve and make ethical decisions. Employees are also responsible in understanding their ethical obligations in order to maintain a positive work environment. The purpose of this case study is to identify the dilemma and analyze different decisions to find ways on how a person should act
Description of the Prisoner’s Dilemma game (theory): The Prisoner’s dilemma is such a game theory which many people use in their real life situation. Furthermore, in order to understand how this game works, let assume that we have two people and their names, for instance, are (Mr. Ralph & Ms. Lauren). Additionally, let assume that these two persons had committed a crime and the police have arrested them. However, it turns out that the police do not have lots of evidence about that crime.
