B. Purpose of the group or meeting
The purpose of Process group is to provide a safe environment for group members to interpersonally experience their thought processes with other group members. It also provides members with a comfortable place to share openly things that are occurring in their lives and the thought patterns that are occurring and process through those and practice different ways of thinking and behaving.
My perception of the group’s goal is that process group allows them the time to openly and freely talk about struggles and successes throughout the week. When conducting the activity the group engaged but did not fully understand grasp the purpose of the interpersonal interactions between them when discussing thought processes.

I, as the facilitator, tried to engage more thought into the question and asked her to think about a time where she really enjoyed doing something which brought her joy other than her children. A.D., reflected openly a memory of taking care of her grandmother before passing, she become conscious and this is noted by her stating she did not realize it until now, that she enjoyed taking care of her grandmother and loved helping people. Through this self-discovery another group member indicated how this same joy can be reverted into taking care of one’s self, A.D. was receptive to the feedback and widened her perspective on what self-care really meant. By becoming more self-aware, A.D. recognized a new aspect of herself. She became emotional and began crying thinking about the passing of her grandmother her level of trust in the group was apparent at this moment. This interaction taps into elements of psychotherapy as the client developed more awareness of the past she reflected on an inner, unconscious desire she had not realized before. The supportive environment from other group members allowed her to freely and openly experience this during the session breaking down the struggles this client had at the beginning of session when asked about ways in which they provide self-care. This dialogue continued throughout the session with another …show more content…
Plan for the group’s next meeting
Process is led by the group members so minimal planning is needed for this group. Facilitator may plan for a small activity to be done during group that leads to an open discussion topic relevant to addiction and recovery. The plan for the next session is to use another small activity to guide the discussion on typical issues that arise for those in recovery.
F. Analysis of the student social worker’s practice
Caring for someone with significant health issues is an exhausting and stressful experience and it is hardly surprising that carers are prone to developing ‘burnout’. Observed in nursing, this phenomenon, described as ‘…a haemorrhaging of oneself for others’ is detrimental as stress over-load causes the cognitive and emotional responses to severely malfunction (O’Mahoney, 1983 cited in Farrington, 1997). Carers in this state of mind inevitably develop negative internalised and externalised feelings, including self-depletion, low self-esteem, limited energy, negativity and hopelessness (Taylor and Barling, 2004). A report conducted by Age UK highlights that 6 out of 10 carers suffer damaging conditions related to their mental health, including depression and lack of confidence. Furthermore, these feelings are often intensified by carers’ perseverance which aggravates existing disabilities, such as arthritis, crumbling spine, heart problems and cancer, and leads to further pain (Carers Trust,
There are three stages of thought for the Grandmother. During the first stage, which is in the beginning, she is completely focused on herself in relation to how others think of her. The second stage occurs wh...
The content of the group is to participate in an unknown activity by following the group leader cues. As for process, the group followed the gestures of the group leader without any verbalization. Although a non-verbal group, the group was still able to perform group processes.
Topics explored with this group included; conversational skills, internet safety, bullying, conflict resolution, social media, and personal appearance. Accordingly, I was able to gain insight on how to plan activities tailored to the needs of the group as well as obtain tips on conducting groups effectively. Additionally, I was able to get a sense of the group dynamics, attain knowledge on the stages of a group through observing all the individuals belonging to the group, their uniqueness and how their personality impacted the group itself. Individuals were able to join the group at different stages hence; the forming stage was repeated each time a new member was recruited. This also provided me with the opportunity of gaining first-hand experience of the interaction on the basic dynamics on group stages of forming, norming, storming and
One objective is to utilize the most powerful tool at psychotherapy’s disposal; the group experience. By one individual sharing their experience within the group, the other members are able to identify their similar experiences and work toward their own growth. Group therapy also increases self-awareness of clients in order for them to think introspectively in order to make a change in behaviors, increases social comfort, allowing exploration of new behaviors, provide and obtain support, develop communication skills, and promote interactions with others using truth and
Preparing the presentation, the group met to discuss ideas on how the presentation could be divided into research parts, see reflective log. The group also found out that although the actual purpose of this essay was to convey how the group executed the PowerPoint, the purpose of what was in the presentation was to give information ( Payne, E and Whittaker L 2006: 193).
In this stage the students that will be working together on a group project are meeting and greeting each other. This stage is very important, because it allows the students to get to know each other by sharing their past experiences, what they are good at, and, perhaps, what they aren’t so good at. This is a good time to set up a schedule for meetings and deadlines that every member on the team is able to maintain. This schedule should accommodate each member’s time schedule, and focus on completing the various project goals. At this stage the student who is designated team leader should give guidance to the team and help them figure out their own roles within the team based on their skills and the requirements of the project. In our discussion board we function somewhat like a team. We have all come together under the guidance of Dr. Clarke, in order to achieve our goal of completing this class. We met each other during the first week, and we have had opportunities to share our ideas and op...
At this facility, I took care of fifteen residents for almost two years and once you are around for that long you get to share holidays with them, you learn their likes and dislikes, you get to hear about their life experiences and learn from them as well and they become like family. There was a lady there in her mid- seventies, who was well known by others as one of the first Strawberry Queen’s in Plant City. She was such a lovely lady and she had many stories to tell. As I was listening to her concerns one night she ended with, “There is something special about you. You’re not like the other girls here because I can tell you actually care. You have all these other things to do, but you are here giving me your time.” What she had verbalized made me tear up, because I was only giving her not even ten minutes of my time and it meant a lot to her. This lady who had been known by many, had very little visitors. Her family were all caught up with their own life and she only had the staff to talk to. It was heartbreaking for me, because in my culture we have grown up taking care of our elderly instead of sending them elsewhere, and here I am taking care of this lady who was getting forgotten by her loved ones. Now as I am in a different position in my career, I get to hear and see things that have
I. Discuss each of the four stages of group life to define your task group process: beginnings, middles, and ends.
When first being introduced to a group, it can be quite stressful trying to figure out how you and your team members are going to function together. As with any group, there are a few milestones that need to be reached in order to ensure a functional and successful relationship. Specifically, groups need to go through Tuckman’s Group Development Stages. These stages consist of forming, storming, norming, performing, and in some scenarios, a final stage of adjourning may be reached. After participating in this assignment, we as a group were easily able to identify, and analyze, each stage of our development.
At this stage, members are comfortable with inclusion concerns and think of themselves as part of the group (Group Development Theory, 2015). Control issues start to arise immensely in this phase (Group Development Theory, 2015). When members confront their control issues, they face concerns related to their ability to influence others and to assume responsibility (Group Development Theory, 2015). Once the group enters the control phase, interaction becomes more confrontational (Group Development Theory, 2015).
... also the samples and an explanation of the process that a counselor should do with this activity in a group setting. It is important to mention that even if this article provided information and steps to process, a group leader must understand and research more information into the process of narrative therapy before implementing this activity to group members. This article made me realize the importance that group leaders have the necessary emotional maturity to handle all the mixed emotions that substance abusers can experienced by using this activity and be aware of their emotional reactions to what is being process by the group members at all times.
After completing the group task of preparing a presentation on, transferring individual facilitation skills into a group work setting I will critically reflect upon my own participation. I will evaluate my self-awareness while working in the group, as well as those around me. The way that I personally dealt with any issues that arose within the group and how that affected the group dynamics. I will also briefly discuss the roles in which each member of the group took and how role allocation affected, the group dynamics and the working relationships. Finally I will evaluate my work having discussed it with my fellow group members.
Hellriegel, Slocum, & Woodman (1986) state that team building is used to improve the effectiveness of work groups by focusing on any of the following four purposes: setting goals and priorities, deciding on means an methods, examining the way in which the group works, and exploring the quality of working relationships. A cycle then develops; it begins with the awareness or perception of a problem and is followed sequentially by data collection, data sharing diagnosis, action planning, action implementation, and behavioral evaluation. This style is repeated as new problems are identified.
Group processing is the fifth essential element of cooperative learning. Group processing is defined as reflecting on a group session to help students: (1) describe what member actions were helpful and unhelpful; and (2) make decisions about what actions to continue or change (Johnson et al., 1994, p.33). To achieve the group’s goals via reflection on the learning process, group processing helps improve the effectiveness of the members in contributing to the shared efforts (Yamarik, 2007). In other words, the aim of group processing is to define clearly and improve the effectiveness of the members in contributing to the joint efforts to achieve the group’s goals. There are two levels of processing: small-group and whole class. At the level
