Owning A Horse
Owning a horse may not be the most financially friendly activity, but it definitely benefits you in many other ways. Throughout this paper will be examples of things to consider when looking to buy a horse, benefits of owning a horse, and careers in the equine world. When looking to invest in a horse, no matter the purpose of the animal, there are many different things to consider just focusing on the horse alone. The initial cost of the horse is the first thing to think about. Horses can cost anywhere from nothing to $70 million (American). Affecting the cost of the horse can be things like the breed of the horse, the condition of the horse, and the level of training that horse has or who you want training your horse. Different breeds of horses cost different amounts. For example, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, and Arabians are some of the most expensive horse breeds (Most Expensive). These horses tend to be better at competing, better built, and all around more successful. The next cost is boarding. Boarding is keeping your horse in someone else’s barn and paying for different services such as feeding, watering, stalls being cleaned, and training. Some horses require supplements in their feed which may cost a bit

If you own your own barn, you need to consider costs of electricity, heat, land, truck, trailer, arena drag, feed, and water. This may be economically draining but it is also a huge time commitment. You need to be prepared to spend a majority of your time taking care of your barn and land. On the other hand, if you do not have your own barn and you choose to board, there is the price of traveling back and forth to the barn. Depending on where you live, there may not be any ideal places to board your horse near you and you may need to be prepared to spend money on gas. For most people, boarding their horse is the most economical

fun with and enjoy your horse. To start you should have your horse groomed and in the cross ties.
A competitor can choose a horse that is more for racing in order to provide a faster horse or a cutting horse that will provide more maneuverability and a smaller bend around the barrels. One ideal is to pair racing and cutting bloodlines in order to produce a horse with the ideal combination of speed and agility. The saddle is the one very important piece of equipment used in barrel racing. The saddle must be tailored to the horse and most of the time the rider chooses a saddle that is up to a full size smaller than he or she would normally use. Saddle pads and cinches must be chosen to fit the horse properly.
The horse is a highly respected animal in United States culture. It has been worshipped and paid tribute to through art, books (Misty of Chincoteague, Black Stallion), movies (Black Beauty, Spirit), and television shows (Mr. Ed). The horse industry is huge in the United States, encompassing everything from rodeos and racing to horses owned for purely pleasure. There have been statues erected of famous racehorses, as well as museums devoted entirely to equines.
Any good horseman should know that there are three very important steps to take into consideration when preparing to ride your horse. The following three steps; grooming, tacking up, and warming up, if done properly should lead to a trouble free enjoyable ride.
Attention Getter: To me life with out horses is a life not worth living. To most people there are only two types of styles of riding, English and western, but there are many more types than that. And all are different.
...als like the plow horse or mule for field use. "In the estimation of the owner, a slave is the most serviceable when in rather a lean and lank condition, such a condition as the race-horse is in" (Northup 201).
Breeders are against slaughter but they maybe the ones causing the problem. Race horse breeders breed multiply foals a year but not all race will and those rejects either find a home or go to slaughter but even champion race horses aren't safe as said in the article Thoroughbreds Washed Up in Racing Often Land at Slaughterhouse “Five Star General will be sold on this day and shoved into a pen with two dozen other horses. Then he'll be loaded into a trailer and shipped 1,500 miles to a small plant just outside Fort Worth, Texas. He will be slaughtered there, racing dreams packaged and shipped overseas. His processed remains will be exported to Belgium or France, where the meat will be prepared in a kitchen. This is horse racing's dirty little secret--the one those in the industry traditionally have ignored and outsiders barely hear about” (Mease). Breeders over breed and end up with to many foals. Not all foals are granted a home the left over to to slaughter and so do old race horses their to much money to keep

As a child, many of us remember forcing our parents to let us go on a pony ride at a fair, and many more may have wanted a horse after that but unfortunately our fantasies were short lived.
Training a horse to ride is hard work, it involves ground work, riding, and in both patience is very important. In the next few paragraphs I will be explaining the steps needed to train a horse.
