The Criminal Justice System is composed of several different fields that include institutions, practices, and systems in which the government mitigates and serves the community by providing safety and security by controlling crimes. As a Deputy Probation Officer in the Criminal Justice System one will be supervising probationers who have been convicted of crimes and sentenced to probation. A Deputy Probation Officer's role requires a great level of compassion, patience, and energy, all while teaching responsibility for necessary life skills. These life skills include communicating, self-control, critical thinking, and problem solving. One must be able to communicate effectively, challenge, and motivate the probationer by teaching a positive way of conduct and how to make better choices in life. The Officer is also responsible providing the offender with the necessary tools for job training, coordinating rehabilitation services, substance abuse counseling, mental health, and other life coping skills.
Deputy Probation Officers often also report to the courts an update on the probationer’s progress. By providing reports and develop a plan for the probationer to adhere in order not to violate probation. Also, ensure the probationer is following all court orders and may also conduct drug testing, perform searches, seize evidence and make arrest if necessary. A caseload may consist of juveniles and adults. Some of the probationers will decide not to follow court orders and as a Deputy Probation Officer, one is responsible for investigating and documenting the violation in efforts to obtain and arrest warrant for the probationer, violating the terms of their probation.

I had the opportunity to conduct a phone interview with Caleb Justice; a corrections officer from the Federal correctional Institution in Terre Haute, Indiana. Caleb is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, where he served four years on active duty as a machine gunner. During his four years he deployed on a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) as well as to Nowzad and Musa Qala Afghanistan. After serving honorably Caleb decided to take his skill set to the civilian sector and began seeking employment in the Criminal Justice System.
The offender must meet with the probation officers in the schedule dates. In case the offenders is not doing what she/he are suppose to do their probation could be revoked which means that most likely they would go back to jail. Probation officers are in charge of different offenders with different criminal offenses. Probation officers have a big caseload. Probation officers main goal is for offenders to rehabilitate and built better lives that doesn't involve criminal activity. A probation officer duty is to main contact with the offender and at least go see him once a month. The probation officer should visit the offender at his house, school, or work. The offenders also have to meet up with the probation officer at the Probation Center. A day in the life of a probation officers varies, they are always risking their life because they meet up with offenders from minor offenses to murder. A probation officer is trying to change the lives of criminals and sometimes it is impossible to help the criminals if they keep choosing
There is some important history he or she should know about the profession. Probation and parole officers have been around for quite some time. They are very important in the society we have today.
Indeed, that correctional counselors and custodial staff need to work together in collaboration to improve on the treatment and management of offenders. For example, they should work together so as to eliminate impediments arising from the conflicting assertions on the advocacy for the treatment and rehabilitation and maintenance of order and security so that the offenders are able to cooperate in correctional treatment without any fear that treatment induced statements may incriminate him/her. This collaboration should be done in a way that ensures offenders are assisted to cope, learn and reform their behaviors so that they can enhance security (McElreath et al.,
A typical day for a Correctional Officer would be the preparing of inmates for court appearances. They also receive new inmates to the facility brought in by the Sheriffs Department. Each new inmate must be photographed and fingerprinted upon immediate arrival to the Pre Trial Centre. They are then stripped and fully searched inside and out. With that ...

All in all, the ideas surrounding the criminal justice system were affirmed by the field practice experience. Many open doors have resulted from the venture into the field of probation. As an advocate and future employee of the criminal justice system the skills and intellect gained from the college of criminal justice at SHSU along with the internship opportunity with the Dallas County Adult Probation Department will serve as a path to a successful career. The talented individuals and extraordinary situations encountered on the journey will not be forgotten.
Every job has its ups and downs, but it just happened to be that we, as human beings, tend to drag our work problems with us to our personal life. Knowing how to separate work from personal life is hard, especially in today’s society considering the technology we have today. This research made me aware of the stress and everyday interactions that probation officers endure and I must admit, is more stressful than I thought. I have always imagined a probation officer’s job much more facile not having such a huge caseload, but like they say, ignorance is bliss. In the following essay, I will be discussing the findings about the stress of a probation officer.
In Trinidad and Tobago the Probation of Offenders Act Chapter 13:51 is the piece of Legislation that governs the operations of the Probation Services Division of the Ministry of Social Development. This is already a disadvantage as being under the Social Development Ministry already makes the case load a bit too much as the Probation Officer will have to act more than one role. This model will not fall under the Social Development ministry, as I believe the Probation Services should fall under the Ministry of Justice as they work hand in hand. The probation services will be located next to or perhaps inside of the juvenile detention facility as to be easily accessed by juvenile offenders and Probation officers so as to g...
I believe that criminal justice employees are unmotivated. Having almost 20 years of experience in the juvenile justice system there have been times that I have witnessed many unmotivated workers. I have also been unmotivated at times. I believe that many people become unmotivated for several reasons. The biggest reason I feel is due to moral between workers and the supervisor. This happens when the supervisor fails to treat everyone the same. He is strict with some workers and lenient with others or he fails to compliment his workers for a job well done but is quick to write a worker up for infractions of the rules. There are other supervisors who make promises that they have no intention on keeping and they have problems keeping their word. For example they tell you that you will get a good raise if your work hard but they fail to mention your extra efforts during your review. The worse supervisors are the ones that encourages their employees to be a team player but they fail to be one
School-based probation allows the probation officer to “ intervene in crisis situations involving the juvenile probationers, assist schools in handling disruptive behavior by probationers and other youths, coordinate interventions with the schools and other agencies, coordinate reentry efforts for youth returning from a juvenile justice facility, and serve as an agent of early intervention for disruptive or truant youth who are not yet involved in the juvenile justice system (Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention, n.d., p.
...ernment. On the other hand, probation is a judicial function. Also, parolees have already spent time in prison before being released into to the community while probationers usually haven’t (in most states). In some jurisdictions, both are supervised by state employed officers or agents, while in others they are supervised by separate probation or parole agencies (Stohr, Walsh, & Hemmens, 2013, p.270). Parole and probation officer (sometimes these jobs are combined in some jurisdictions) have two common roles: to protect the community and to assist the probationers/parolees to become more productive, law-abiding members of the community. This dual role makes them both law enforcement officers as well as social workers.
Also that community supervision of criminal offenders only succeeds if the balance is in place. However, by using that balance on supervising offenders in their communities, supervising officers have to make sure that offenders are living up to their conditions of probation and parole and are hopefully taking advantage of the services provided while under supervision. During the process of supervision offenders are taught to think differently, to see the world in a different perspective to change their thinking
AS a member of the Probation Advisory Team, I have helped plan and co-facilitated Education Never End Seminars for juvenile probationers. Education Never End Seminars included an array of topics such as behavior and social skills that include dealing with peer pressure, decision making, substance abuse and accountability.
So that they won't do any bad decisions that could send them to jail. Supervision process is similar in probation; it is handle by the same agency as parole. Supervision begins when offender placed on the caseload workload of probation and parole officer. There's two types of violations in probation. First is technical, violate any of the conditions of probations. Second is new offense, when a violation involves a new crime. If an offender breaks any of the rules in being probation, they will get sent to prison. Community service is voluntary work intended to help people in an area. It's not only to help other but to help the offender from staying away from prison. (Abadinsky,
