Under the 14th Amendment's "personal liberty", women are given the right to obtain an abortion. Almost 50% of all pregnancies in this country are unintended, including over 30% within marriage. And over half of all unplanned pregnancies end in abortion. Improved access to contraception would address the source causes of unintended pregnancy and would diminish the need for abortion, but not abolish the choice. A widespread misconception with the pro-life, pro-choice dispute is that pro-choice means “for abortion”. Pro-choice plainly means women have the right to chose what they want and no one can chose for them. “I have met thousands and thousands of pro-choice men and women. I have never met anyone who is pro-abortion."-Hillary Clinton. The pro choice debate wants to make it apparent to people they are not fighting for abortions; they are fighting for the right to be able to have abortions. As only women can get pregnant, and therefore only women have abortions, a male legislator has no right to vote on an abortion related law. Every woman has the right to make her own choice and it should continue in that manner. If you're opposed to abortion, don't have one, but don't try to impose your morality on others. Abortion is a personal choice between a woman and her doctor. Instead of making abortion more complicated and treacherous for women, lawmakers should promote policies that reduce the need for abortion. Teenagers who become mothers have harsh prospects for the future. Teenagers obtaining abortions are 20% and girls under 15 accounts for 1.2%. They are much more likely to leave of school; receive insufficient prenatal care; rely on public assistance to raise a child; develop health problems; or en... ... middle of paper ... ... human, but it is not a human being, and in this sense, neither is a fertilized egg. They believe human life occurs at conception. The mother decides when the fetus is a “human” and only the mother. No one else gets to make that pronouncement Pro lifers believe that it’s okay to force someone to be pregnant even if they’ve been raped, the fetus could have problems, or the fetus could kill the mother. Forcing someone to be pregnant is wrong, it’s their own choice. If you get nothing else out this essay I hope you learned that pro choice doesn’t mean pro abortion, it means let women choose what to do with their own bodies. Abortion is a tough choice and the decision should be a personal one, without interference of government. Abortion can continue to be safe as long as its legal and in a hospital, making it illegal would cause more problems than it would solve.
As to any argument, there are two opposing sides when it comes to the matter of abortions. These two opposers usually refer to themselves as “pro-life” and “pro choice”. Pro-life supporters maintain that abortion is wrong and pro-choice believe that it is a woman’s freedom to choose her pregnancy decisions. When it comes to the topic of abortions, most of us will readily agree that it’s a woman’s choice to decide what her reproductive decisions are, i.e. pro-choice. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is in the question of whether or not abortion is a fundamental right granted to women by the Constitution. Whereas some are convinced that a fetus is considered alive at conception, usually citing the word of God, others maintain that
Pro-choice versus pro-life argues over the issue of what should be the right stance when dealing with the life of an unborn child. From the perspective of a person who is pro-choice, they believe that “individuals have unlimited autonomy with respect to their own reproductive systems, just as long as they don’t violate the independence of others.” Pro-choice also argues that the government should not have the right to decide whether a woman should exterminate her pregnancy or not. From their viewpoint, they believe that what should be legal in the eyes of the government is contraception use, celibacy, abstinence, and abortion for the first two trimesters of pregnancy. On the stance of pro-life, they argue that the government has a right
There will always be a debate over whether or not abortion should be a legal option. It continues to divide Americans very long after the US Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade. People, identifying themselves as pro-choice, say that choosing abortion is a right that should not be limited by the government or religious authority, and it outweighs any right claimed for a fetus or an embryo. It is said that pregnant women will resort to unsafe, illegal abortions if they do not get the option to do it the safer way, legally. Their opponents, identifying themselves as pro-life, say that a life begins at conception, and so abortion is the immoral killing of an innocent, helpless human being. They say
People who in favor of allowing women to make all relevant decisions regarding conception, contraception, pregnancy, and abortion are known as “pro-choice”, while those who in favor of outlawing abortions, and of empowering the government to determine whether abortion should be allowed are known as “pro-life”. Abortion should remain as a legal option for women because the state government has no rights to interfere with a woman’s body; illegal abortions cause more maternal fatalities than legal abortions; and, there is no conclusive evidence or argument that a fetus is equal to a human being and therefore has equal
In the two decades before Roe v. Wade, it has been “estimated that 200,000 to 1.2 million women sought out illegal abortions with approximately 5,000 women, resulting in death” due to dangerous abortion procedures performed by underground abortion clinics. The statistics indicate that prohibiting abortion does not stop women from seeking abortion. Making abortion illegal increases the risk of fatality as well as jeopardizing women’s health because having an abortion without proper medical care and procedure will most likely cause infection, infertility, or even death. Legalizing abortion will allow women to receive proper care and a safe abortion, which decreases the risk of death. For example, “the mortality rate related to induced abortion
Abortion is a subject that is talked about very commonly throughout society. Many doctors who give abortions are called killers. The people who call these doctors killers are pro-lifers. They believe abortion is wrong. Pro-lifers also believe abortion laws were made up by baby killers, and not our court system. Abortion was illegal at one point. It wasn’t until the case of Roe vs. Wade that the Supreme Court decided women have the right to abortion as long as guidelines were followed. Roe vs. Wade guidelines that were established are still in effect today.
Luckily, today in society, everyone is allowed to decide for themselves whether something is morally correct or incorrect. Ultimately, everyone is entitled to their own choices. Women should be permitted to resume choosing their personal preferences when it comes down to their bodies and reproductive lives. The advantages of abortion outweigh shortcomings. The case of Roe vs. Wade has assisted development of boundaries to conclude legal rights of the mother and the fetus. Although the pro-life and pro-choice group of persons are found, but there is nothing known as pro-abortion. While no one particularly wishes to end wonders of life, abortion guarantees protection and legal rights of women. Although abortion is opposed by many people, it should remain legal, as it is the woman's right to control her own body.
Abortion is not as harmful as its opponents claim it to be. Instead of viewing abortion as "murder," society as a whole must consider abortion as a necessary alternative. Abortion can save a woman's life, physically, mentally, and emotionally. In today's society, the following reasons clearly impact the abortion dilemma. First, the definition of "life" the anti-abortionists provide us with is self-contradictory. Second, abortions are safer than ever in the past. Third, abortions help society avoid the challenges caused by unwanted children. Fourth, abortions benefit the mother's emotional life. Finally, abortion has its consent from the Bible. Therefore, abortion in the United States of America should remain legal.
Since only women can get pregnant, male legislators have no right to vote on anything abortion-related because it doesn’t affect him personally. If an innocent woman is raped and later becomes pregnant, should she be forced to have the baby? Well, according to pro-choice believers, she should have the right to decide for herself if she wants an abortion. An innocent unborn baby should not be punished for the crimes and poor decisions of his father. The mother must stick out the tough nine months that it takes to be pregnant in order to save the life of the faultless developing child inside of her.
Throughout history American’s opinions on abortion have been equally divided between the three options offered, whether abortion should be offered to those who want it any without limitations, offered with limitations or whether it should be prohibited. Even though Americans remain divided over the issue of abortion, the majority would like to see severer limits placed on abortions in the United States. According to a poll conducted by New York Times and CBS “democrats and women are more likely to prefer keeping abortion generally available to those who want it.” Thee, M. (2007, April 19). Abortion laws and related cases continue to be a major issue in today’s society and it will continue shaping American’s laws.
With so many women choosing to have abortions, it would be expected that it would not be so greatly frowned up, yet society is still having problems with its acceptance. Every woman has the fundamental right to decide for herself, free from government interference, whether or not to have an abortion. Today, more than ever, American families do not want the government to trample on their right to privacy by mandating how they must decide on the most intimate, personal matters. That is why, even though Americans may differ on what circumstances for terminating a crisis pregnancy are consistent with their own personal moral views, on the fundamental question of who should make this personal decision, the majority of Americans agree that each woman must have the right to make this private choice for herself. Anti-choice proposals to ban abortions for “sex-selection” or “birth-control” are smokescreens designed to shift the focus of the debate away from this issue and trivialize the seriousness with which millions of women make this highly personal decision. Any government restriction on the reasons for which women may obtain legal abortions violates the core of this right and could force all women to publicly justify their reasons for seeking abortion.
Abortion has been a complex social issue in the United States ever since restrictive abortion laws began to appear in the 1820s. By 1965, abortions had been outlawed in the U.S., although they continued illegally; about one million abortions per year were estimated to have occurred in the 1960s. (Krannich 366) Ultimately, in the 1973 Supreme Court case of Roe v. Wade, it was ruled that women had the right to privacy and could make an individual choice on whether or not to have an abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy. (Yishai 213)
Our Nation was built on the ideas of freedom and independence. With that concept, I believe that our government needs to trust that women have the capability to choose what is best for their future. Our society should respect women’s independence and grant them the freedom to decide what is right. This issue is important to me because history has shown that restricting abortions, not only undermines women, but can also be very dangerous.
Abortion provides women the opportunity to choose between pregnancy. Many individuals find abortion to be beneficial on account of their financial status in life, among other factors such as single mothers who cannot afford a child and people who are unfit or unable to support a child. This topic pins individuals against each other in every corner of the world. Many see it as immoral, while others oppose the issue due to their religion. Supporters of pro-life more often than not are influenced by their religious views on the issue; as a result, those who oppose it, often try to force and push their beliefs onto others. Pro-life doesn’t allow women to have control of their bodies and their reproductive rights. Considering these ideas woman should
Abortion has taken the lives of more than 50 million babies since 1973 (“About Abortion”). The issue of abortion is one of the most common controversial issues in American politics and culture. In modern society, many women that have an unintended pregnancy and they result to abortion without researching other options. Abortion is not a substitute for birth control and this issue should be taken seriously. The individual woman needs to understand that by agreeing to have an abortion she is agreeing to kill an innocent fetus. Abortion rips the unborn child from his or hers right to life. Society needs to let women see through the eyes of the fetus and find alternative ways to raise the baby. Abortion should be illegal because childhood begins at conception, not at birth.
